Day 3 of the PokerStars.net North American Poker Tour Mohegan Sun is in the books as the field was cut down to its final 24 players. Heading the pack into Day 4 is defending champion Vanessa Selbst with 1.406 million in chips.

When play began for the day, 74 players returned to the felt, but only 56 of them would be getting paid. That meant a handful of players would have to hit the rail empty handed. Some of those players who were eliminated short of the money included Kevin Eyster, Ronnie Bardah, Team PokerStars Online’s Andrew Brokos, Todd Terry and Dan O’Brien. The official bubble boy went to Nick Binger, who ended his tournament in 57th place.

Selbst was able to build her stack pretty steadily throughout the day, but it wasn’t until right at the end of the night that she took over the chip lead from Vincent Rubianes.

From under the gun, Olivier Busquet raised to 21,000. Rubianes reraised to 51,000 from the cutoff and then action fell on Selbst on the button. She four-bet to 109,000 and play folded back to Busquet. He folded and then Rubianes made the call. The flop came down {10-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{2-Clubs} and Rubianes checked. Selbst bet 129,000 and Rubianes made the call, making this pot awfully big between two of the largest stacks in the room.

The turn card added the {J-Clubs} to the board and completed a possible flush draw. Both players checked to see the {3-Clubs} put a fourth club on board on the river. Rubianes checked and Selbst bet 294,000. After tanking for a bit, Rubianes made the call, but only to muck his hand when Selbst tabled the {K-Spades}{K-Clubs} for a king-high club flush.

Play resumes tomorrow at 12:00 PM EST where the final 24 players will return to action and play down to just one final table of eight is left standing. There's plenty of firepower still left in the field, but it's Selbst's tournament now and it doesn't look like she's ready to give up her title anytime soon. Cortellino Out in 25th Place

Level 19 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante

Leonard Cortellino moved all in for his last 44,000 with the {K-Spades}{Q-Clubs}. He was called by Sukh Sandhu holding the {4-Spades}{4-Hearts}. The board ran out {A-Clubs}{5-Spades}{2-Spades}{9-Clubs}{A-Hearts} to miss Cortellino and send him to the rail in 25th place.

With 24 players left in the field, the clock has been stopped and the players are beginning to bag and tag for the night. We'll have the table and seat draw along with chip counts coming for you shortly.

Winning this pot put Selbst in the lead with about 1.4 million and knocked Rubianes back to one million.

Schroer Survives

Level 19 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante
Jonathan Schroer
Jonathan Schroer

Jonathan Schroer has ridden the short stack admirably here this week, but he just got himself in a spot of trouble. With 108,000 chips left, Schroer took his stand with {A-Diamonds} {J-Diamonds}, running his suited ace right into the {A-} {K-} of Leonard Cortellino.

Things would get better in a hurry for the school leader from North Carolina, though, as the {10-Diamonds} {7-Clubs} {J-Spades} flop pulled him into a big lead with two to come. The turn {3-Clubs} brought no change, and neither did the {6-Hearts} river, and Schroer has found his come-from-behind double up here in the eleventh hour.

Now it's Cortellino who needs the double as he's been crippled all the way down to just 46,000 lonely chips.

Rubianes Reigns

Level 19 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante
Vincent Rubianes
Vincent Rubianes

Eric Froehlich opened the pot to 24,000 from the hijack seat, and Vincent Rubianes three-bet to 54,000 next door. In the small blind, Ruben Costa wanted to play for it all, and he shoved in for his last ~450,000. Froehlich quickly ducked out, but Rubianes made the call with his huge stack, and the cards were on their backs.

Showdown
Rubianes: {K-Diamonds} {K-Spades}
Costa: {10-Diamonds} {10-Clubs}

Costa was in bad shape and drawing slim for his tournament life. The dealer wouldn't bail him out, either, running a {8-Spades} {3-Hearts} {A-Diamonds} {2-Clubs} {Q-Hearts} board to seal his fate. Costa was escorted to the payout desk to collect a small check, but there's nothing small about Rubianes' stack. He's got about 1.44 million now and a huge lead over the field.
