Tilly Takes on Star-Studded Field to Soar to the Top

Level 8 : 300/600, 75 ante
Jennifer Tilly leads after Day 1
Jennifer Tilly leads after Day 1

Some times at PokerNews we have to prepare a recap of the day’s play bearing in mind one of a few players could finish on top of the pile. It’s almost like a live reporter’s range. Today we had no such problems as one player smashed, bashed, value-bet and sucked out on all comers to amass a huge stack after eight levels of play. That person was Jennifer Tilly who bagged up 218,000 chips. Asked about how her day went she just said, “I got lucky!” Ashton Griffin quickly piped in and said that she played great as well as getting lucky.

She is far clear of a chasing pack that includes Faraz Jaka (126,000), Brain Park (114,200), Marvin Rettenmaier (109,000), Michael Mizrachi (89,700), Bertrand “Elky” Grospellier (82,500) and Mori Eskandani (89,400). A total of 52 players remain. With all the success Mizrachi has had in the last year, lest us not forget he is the defending champ.

The tone of Tilly’s day was set very early on when she eliminated Eugene Katchalov in the first level when her set of jacks bettered his set of eights. From there she never looked back as she eliminated player after player. If she didn’t have it she made it, if she did have it they paid her off, and if they were bluffing she sniffed it out. She basically just had one of those days you dream of.

For her to have such a good day many had to have bad days. Steve O’Dwyer paid a very quick visit, Mohsin Charania couldn’t win with aces or kings, Daniel Negreanu came and talked a lot before flipping off, Andrew Lichtenberger busted to go and take his Chance on Broadway, and Isaac Haxton fell to the in-form Rettenmaier.

Haxton was really straightened out by German Pro. The two took a {k-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}{q-Diamonds} flop with Justin Bonomo and it was the latter who fired for 1,250. Haxton raised to 4,000 and Bonomo folded after Rettenmaier called. The turn came {9-Hearts} and Haxton bet 8,200, tank-called by the German. The river fell {q-Spades} and Haxton bet his last 15,000 and was snapped off by Rettenmaier who had filled up with {k-Spades}{q-Clubs}. The unlucky Haxton opened {j-Diamonds}{10-Hearts} for straight and made his exit.

Play will resume at 2pm (CET) tomorrow where the tournament format moves on to the next stage. It’s all about action-packed 6-max, and play will continue until we have 16 players remaining. From there the tournament moves into a heads-up format. If we reach the required number early enough then the round of 16 matches will also play out tomorrow, and will negate the need for a fourth day of play.

Join the PokerNews reporting team back here tomorrow for what promises to be an exciting day of play. This fun tournament, played for the first time here last year, sees momentum build and build as it progresses.

Various Chip Counts at the End of Day 1

Three More Hands

Level 8 : 300/600, 75 ante

The tournament official has just announced that the remaining players will play three more hands before calling it a night. We're off to grab some chip counts, so stay tuned for those and a full recap from Day 1 of Event #5: €10,450 Mixed Max - No-Limit Hold'em.

Stout Doubles Through the Defending Champ

Matt Stout
Matt Stout

We didn't see the hand unfold, but we do know that Matt Stout just doubled through Michael "The Grinder" Mizrachi. The dealer had already mucked the defending champ's hand, but we were able to see that Stout held {J-Clubs}{J-Diamonds} on a {J-Spades}{9-Diamonds}{A-Hearts}{6-Spades}{4-Diamonds} board. From what we could deduce from the talk after the hand, the chips must have went in preflop and Mizrachi likely held an overpair only to have the jacks set up.

A Few Chip Counts

Cheung More Than Doubles While Sending Karr to the Rail

McLean Karr
McLean Karr

Mori Eskandani opened for 1,500 under the gun only to have McLean Karr shove all in for approximately 11,000 from the hijack. Fung Cheung was next to act in the cutoff and she promptly moved all in herself for 31,350. Eskandani asked for a count and then put in a call.

Showdown
Karr: {8-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}
Eskandani: {J-Spades}{J-Hearts}
Cheung: {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Spades}

Cheung had the best of it and was never in any serious trouble as the board ran out {7-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{K-Hearts}{6-Clubs}. With that, an unhappy Karr ran out of gas.

What Just Happened?

We just witnessed a very strange hand occur in the back of the room. We're not 100% positive, but it appeared action folded to Phil Hellmuth and he raised on the button. John Juanda was in the big blind and we think he moved all in, to which Hellmuth snap-called off for 23,300 with {K-Spades}{K-Diamonds}.

"Oh," Juanda said with a hint of surprise in his voice, "I didn't look." He then tabled {9-Hearts}{5-Hearts}. The board ran out an uneventful {A-Clubs}{A-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{J-Hearts}{6-Clubs} and we were left scratching our heads as to whether or not we might have missed something.

Tilly in a Hand. Guess What Happened Next?

That was a pretty easy quiz question, even at this late time in the South of France. She won another pot of course to smash through the 200k mark.

She was up against Alves De Lima and faced an 11,075 river bet on a {10-Hearts}{10-Spades}{k-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}{3-Spades} board. She called with {k-Spades}{q-Hearts} to beat her opponent's {7-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}.

"Still Tilly!" Said a player at the table.
