Time For Day 2 of the Snowfest

David Allan is the overall chip leader on Day 2
David Allan is the overall chip leader on Day 2

Welcome to Day 2 the SKYCITY Casino in Queenstown, New Zealand for continued coverage of the 2012 Australia New Zealand Poker Tour Queenstown Snowfest Main Event!

Today will play out in a somewhat unique way, with half the field partaking in three levels of action on Day 2a at 12:30 PM local time. The other half will play three levels on Day 2b at 4:00 PM. The survivors from both of these flights will then be combined at 7:30 PM and continue playing for another few levels. The table draws for these Day 2 flights can be seen below.

The overall chip leader heading into Day 2 is Australia's David Allan, who holds a chip stack of 98,200. Allan will be partaking Day 2a, while the person with largest stack on Day 2b is Nurlan Boobekov with 69,200.

Be sure to strap yourselves in for a long night as we start shrinking the field in anticipation of making it to the final table this weekend. The first Day 2 flight of the day begins at 12:30 PM and PokerNews will be here all day long, so don't miss it!

Level: 7

Blinds: 300/600

Ante: 75

Day 2a Begins

Level 7 : 300/600, 75 ante

The 43 players partaking on Day 2a are currently in their seats and the cards are in the air. Just a reminder, these players will play three levels before heading on an extended break. The other 44 players will then take to the tables on Day 2b from 4:00 PM. All the surviving players from both flights will then be combined and play an unspecified amount of levels from 7:30 PM.

Kanaan Hits Six-Figures

As far as we can tell, Michael Kanaan is the first player to sit behind a six-figure stack. Plenty of those chips came courtesy of the following hand.

Folded to Justin Smith in the small blind, he raised it up to 1,100. Kanaan was in the big blind and made the call as the dealer flipped over a {2-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{10-Spades} flop. Kanaan and Smith both checked here and a {3-Diamonds} hit the turn. This time Smith led for 1,600 and Kanaan called. An {8-Diamonds} on the river would see Smith again check and Kanaan check behind.

"Ace high," said Smith without turning his hand over.

"Ace, what?" replied Kanaan, also not yet revealing his hand.

"Six," snapped back Smith.

Kanaan simply revealed his {a-}{9-} here and raked in the nice little pot.

"Just needed to bet, didn't I?" said Smith, more to himself than Kanaan. Smith received no reply.

Griffiths Doubles; Rikki Falls

Rikki Papesch was under the gun when he found himself holding {k-Spades}{q-Spades}. He decided now was a good time to shove his around 12,000-chip stack in the middle. Unfortunately for Papesch, Kristina Griffiths woke up with {a-Hearts}{a-Spades} a couple of seats to his left. Griffiths got her stack in the middle as well and the rest of the table got out of the way.

If there was a silver lining for Papesch, it may have been that Griffiths had slightly less chips than him and therefore he wasn't eliminated when the {10-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}{q-Clubs}{3-Clubs} board was spread along the felt.

However, after that disappointing hand, Papesch was left with less than a big blind and would find himself all in, yet again holding {k-Spades}{q-Spades}. This time he was up against an opponent's {j-Clubs}{j-Spades} and the {8-Clubs}{3-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{8-Spades}{10-Clubs} board would do him no favours as he was sent to the rail.

Wonson Rises Above Six-Figures

David Wonson is the latest player to rack up a six-figure stack. We recently watched Wonson take down a handy little pot against David Allan and two other opponents. When we arrived at the table there was a {7-Spades}{4-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}{q-Hearts} board out on the felt, with over 3,000 already in the middle. At this point one player was busy checking to Allan, who bet 1,400. The player directly on Allan's left made the call and then Wonson raised it up to 5,000. That bet was enough to scare everyone away as Wonson raked in the pot.

Readers may recall that both Allan and Wonson finished up with the two largest stacks on Day 1a. The tables were balanced just a short while ago and Allan was moved to Wonson's table.

Allan Stays On Top

The two largest stacks in the room, David Allan and David Wonson, have just rumbled in a hand over on their table. Allan came off as the victor in the hand, with the action playing out like so.

Allan was under the gun when he opened up the pot with a small raise. Wonson called a couple of spot to his left and it was on to the small blind player, who also made the call.

The small blind and Allan would check the {10-Clubs}{8-Spades}{6-Hearts} flop and Wonson would bet 1,500. Only Allan called and the dealer would flip over a {q-Clubs} on theAllan again check-called here, this time when Wonson bet 2,000.

A {j-Diamonds} completed the board on the river, leaving four cards to a straight on felt. Allan casually flicked out 20,000 worth of chips - far more than was in the pot. Wonson didn't take long to fold and Allan raked in the pot to yet again move his stack up the chip leader board.

Chevalier Leaving

The 2011 ANZ Player of the Year, Danny Chevalier, has recently been seen with his back pack in hand, making his way out of the tournament area. Chevalier started the day as one of the short stacks and was never able to gain any momentum as he will now have time to join all the wonders that the beautiful Queenstown has to offer.
