The International Language of Poker

No matter where you go in the world, the break-time conversations sound exactly the same, even with an Aussie or Kiwi accent. Out on the balcony, a hoard of players gathered for a smoke and a chat about their first two levels:

"...comes three-four-seven, and he checks..."

"...check-raises all in with just the ace of..."

"...no way I can put him on a king there, mate..."

"...got it all-in drawing to two outs..."

"...raises every time on the button, so I made it three thousand..."

"...what can he shove there? I can't fold top set unless..."

"...have to fold if another heart peels off though. So it was..."

"...never seen a worse player. The guy three-bet me with..."

"...it goes limp, limp, fold, fold, limp, so I come in with deuce-four..."

"...and it comes runner-runner to give him a damn straight..."

He Did It Again

Just before the break, James Honeybone made a bet on a flop of {Q-Spades} {Q-Hearts} {10-Spades} after an opponent checked to him. Honeybone's bet of 5,175 was large in comparison to the pot, which was only around 1,000.

When his opponent asked how much the bet was, Honeybone jumped out of his chair and said, "that was supposed to be 625!" He again mistakenly bet a 5,000 chip instead of a 500 chip...or was it intentional?

Carter Gill Eliminated

It was an early exit for Gill
It was an early exit for Gill
Catching up with the action on a flop of {K-Clubs} {J-Hearts} {8-Spades}, Carter Gill check-called a bet from his opponent. The turn was the {10-Hearts} and Gill checked again. His opponent bet 2,000 and Gill wasted little time in moving all in for 5,725. He was quickly called.

Gill announced that he had two pair and showed the {10-Diamonds} {8-Hearts}, but was far behind his opponent's broadway straight with the {A-Spades} {Q-Hearts}. "I have a few outs. I made the right call on the flop," said Gill.

The dealer placed the {5-Diamonds} on the river and that was it for Gill. "Good game guys, I played bad," said Gill to the rest of the table as he made his exit from the tournament area.

Levy Slips in the Backdoor

The button had just folded and Grant Levy, in the big blind, said, "so, you're gonna let us play now?" pertaining to the fact that the button has been raising his blind quite often. The small blind then raised to 300 and Levy called.

The flop came {K-Diamonds} {Q-Clubs} {5-Diamonds} and it was checked to Levy, who checked as well.

The turn was the {A-Clubs} and this time the small blind led for 400. Levy made the call.

The river was the {3-Clubs} and an amount of 1,000 was bet into Levy. Levy thought for a moment before making the call. His opponent seemed confident when he turned over pocket kings for flopped top set. Levy turned up the {9-Clubs} {2-Clubs} though, and a look of disgust struck his opponent's face.

Levy's backdoor flush has put him over the 26,000 chip mark.

Walker Can Walk the Walk

Raymond Walker called a raise from an opponent preflop. The flop came down {J-Diamonds} {5-Diamonds} {3-Clubs}. The preflop raiser checked and Walker bet 225. His opponent called. The turn was the {8-Hearts} and again it was checked to Walker who again bet, this time, for 525. His opponent quickly called.

The river was the {9-Spades} and action was back on Walker after another check from his opponent. Walker bet 1,525 and his opponent quickly mucked.

Walker has been increasing steadily. "You at 30,000 yet, mate?" asked Mark Vos.

"Not yet, right around 25," replied Walker.

Where is Everyone?

There are 142 players who registered for today's flight, though many of them have not yet taken their seats. There are still more than a dozen empty chairs, and the floor staff has just removed their chips from the table so that they can ensure the field is balanced. If the players do show up, they will be given their stacks, minus the blinds they missed, and assigned a new seat. Registration remains open until the end of the second level.
