Day 1a Started
G’day from the sunny shores of Sydney, Australia for the season four-ending PokerStars.net Asia Pacific Poker Tour Sydney Main Event!
A highly successful season four has seen four events already held in the Philippines, China and New Zealand before finally stopping here in Australia for the AU$6,300 Grand Final.
On this very day last year, Aaron Benton was celebrating victory over a 396-player field to see the now-tournament circuit regular walk away with a first prize of $543,260 or AU$594,000.
Although there has been a steady decline in main event numbers (2007 – 561, 2008 – 477, 2009 – 396), the calibre of players in town looking to capture a piece of the $2,000,000-plus prizepool is only second to the Aussie Millions in this part of the Southern Hemisphere.
Team PokerStars Pros from this region such as Joe Hachem, Tony Hachem, Celina Lin, Bryan Huang and Raymond Wu will be joined by the likeable Daniel Negreanu who has made the journey to Sydney with a small posse of friends. Throw in previous APPT Champions Grant Levy, Eddy Sabat, Simon Watt and Van Marcus, as well as the young online guns of Jonathan ‘xMONSTERxDONGx’ Karamalikis, Brendon ‘Brendooor’ Rubie and Tom ‘tollgate’ Grigg and today’s tournament is going to be one of the toughest Sydney has ever seen.
PokerNews will be providing the exclusive live coverage of all the action over the next six days, so make sure to stay tuned here as we crown the final PokerStars.net APPT Champion of season four!
