It’s down to nine at the APPT Melbourne Main Event, with the elimination of Aharon Shabtay in 10th place bringing Day 3 proceedings to a close.

What started as 37 players has been whittled down to a final table of 9, each vying for the $330,000 first prize and the bragging rights to go with it.

Some of the players who started the day, but went home empty handed include Reza Vakili, Tony Hachem and the official bubble-boy Jefferey Garrett.

The prominent names who managed to cash include PokerStars Team Online Pro Keiran Harris (24th place), Ricky Kroesen (23rd place), Antonis Kambouroglou (21st place), Michael Guzzardi (15th place) and James Obst (11th place).

But without further ado let us introduce to you, in order of chips, the final table of the first stop in the fifth season of the Asia Pacific Poker Tour.

As you can see, it’s Phillip Willcocks out in front with a big chip lead. Willcocks received most of his chips earlier in the day, from 28th place finisher Koray Turker.

Leo Boxell is in contention, with him the only other player to crack seven-figures, while Phares Bouya and Michael Frydman sit with healthy stacks. Van Marcus and Eddie Mascardi will start the day as the two short-stacks, but will still have plenty of chips to play with.

All the action will kick off tomorrow at 2.10 pm AEST, so make sure to tune in as the PokerNews Live Reporting Team is in the midst of all the action and ready to crown an APPT champion!

Aharon Shabtay Eliminated in 10th ($18,300)

Aharon Shabtay
Aharon Shabtay

Aharon Shabtay has been one of the shorter stacks for the last level or so, but made a couragous run at making the final table.

Shabtay shoved his stack all-in holding {a-Clubs}{7-Hearts} and received a call from Phares Bouya, holding {a-Spades}{q-Hearts}.

By the time the turn had fallen, the board read {j-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{6-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}, with Shabtay looking good to double-up and continue his run towards the final nine.

The {q-Diamonds} on the river would change all of that, sending Shabtay out in 10th and with $18,300 for his gallant effort.

James Obst

James Obst moved his relatively short stack all-in from under the gun and received a snap-call from Van Marcus on the button.

Obst: {a-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}
Marcus: {a-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}

The board ran out {8-Clubs}{q-Spades}{j-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{j-Spades}, with a bit of a straight sweat for Obst, but alas, it wasn't meant to be as Obst was sent to the rail in 11th place for $18,300.

Obst Surviving

Julius Colman raised to 24,000 from the button and Michael Frydman made the call from the small blind. The action was now on James Obst and he decided now was his time to move all-in.

It was 122,000 more to his opponents and when Colman got out of the way, Michael Frydman went into the tanl.

After almost two minutes Frydman made the fold and sent the pot to the short-stacked Obst who now sits with a slightly healthier stack.

Slow It Down

Level 18 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante

The players have tighened up as we approach the final table.

Only two more bust outs are needed before play is paused at the APPT Melbourne Main Event.

Jones Chipping Up

William Jones made it 25,000 from under the gun and received one caller, in chipleader Phillip Willcocks from the cutoff position.

Flop: {q-Spades}{5-Hearts}{k-Clubs}

Jones led for 32,000 and Willcocks made the call.

The turn came the {k-Hearts} and Jones check-called a 32,000 chip bet from Willcocks.

The river was another king, with the {k-Diamonds} enticing a check-raise all-in from Jones. Willcocks opting to fold and surrender his bet of 100,000 as Jones moves to 700,000

Luke Edwards Eliminated in 12th Place ($18,300)

Luke Edwards
Luke Edwards

Luke Edwards was under the gun when he shipped his 158,000 stack all-in. Play folded around to Jackson Zheng in the cutoff position, and he would be the only caller as Edwards tournament life was on the line.

Edwards: {j-Spades}{10-Spades}
Zheng: {k-Spades}{k-Clubs}

Edwards was alive but in bad shape and when the board ran out {5-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{a-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}{5-Hearts} it was all over for Edwards as he is sent to the rail with $18,300 in prize money as the 12th place finisher.
