Martirosyan Shoves River

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

Artem Lobus limped in from middle position only to have David Martirosyan raise to 400. With the action folding back round to Lobus, he three-bet to 1,600 and Martirosyan called to see a {Q-Hearts}{J-Spades}{7-Diamonds} flop fall.

Lobus continued for 2,000 and Martirosyan called as the {K-Clubs} landed on the turn and Lobus tossed in 4,000. Martirosyan again made the call as the {K-Diamonds} completed the board on the river.

Lobus checked and Martirosyan moved all in for roughly 26,000 to force an insta-fold from Lobus as Martirosyan flashed his {A-Hearts} and climbed to 39,000 in chips.

You've Come to the Wong Place

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

Tom Rafferty opened for 300 from middle position and received called from Ihar Soika and Charles Wong in the hijack and button respectively. After the blinds folded, the flop came down {4-Clubs}{k-Clubs}{a-Spades} and all three players checked.

Rafferty checked for a second time on the {4-Diamonds} turn, and Soika took the opportunity to bet 650. Wong responded with a raise to 1,825, Rafferty folded, and Soika made the call. Both players returned to checking on the {9-Diamonds} river and Wong tabled the {k-Hearts}{q-Clubs} for a pair of kings. Unfortunately for him it was no good as Soika tabled the {a-Diamonds}{10-Clubs} for a pair of aces.

Ace on the River Burns Cockburn

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

Alan Lau opened for 300 from the hijack only to have Craig Cockburn three-bet to 700 from the button. Both blinds folded, Lau four-bet to 2,100, and Cockburn called, which brought about a flop of {j-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{2-Spades}. Lau was first to act and bet 2,200, which prompted Cockburn to call.

After the dealer had burned and turned the {3-Diamonds}, Lau bet 5,100, Cockburn called, and the {A-Spades} completed the board on the river. Lau thought for a few moments before checking, and Cockburn followed suit. Lau then tabled the {a-Clubs}{k-Hearts} for a rivered pair of aces, and Cockburn simply shook his head before sending his cards to the muck unseen.

Top Pair for Lamb

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

Following a raise in the cutoff to 300, Ben Lamb three-bet to 1,100 from the small blind. His opponent came along to see a {K-Spades}{4-Clubs}{6-Spades} flop fall with Lamb betting out 850.

Following a call from Lamb's opponent, the {Q-Clubs} would be checked through as the {10-Hearts} completed the board on the river.

Lamb tossed in 1,550 and his opponent made the call, but then would be forced to muck at the sight of Lamb's {K-Hearts}{9-Diamonds} for top pair.

Setting the Stage in the City of Dream

No place in the world has grown as fabled in the poker world as Macau, a tiny island located just a short distance from the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong. For years word has spread across the globe of legendary high-stakes cash games that have attracted some of the game's best including Tom "durrrr" Dwan, Ben Lamb and Greg Merson, just to name a few. In more recent years, Macau has played host to some of the most prestigious tournaments in the East.

So what's it like in Macau, or at least here in the PokerStars Live poker room here at the City of Dreams? Let us set the stage.

The first thing that strikes you (at least this newcomer) is the grand scale of things. The buildings are similar in aesthetics compared to those in Vegas, but here in Macau they seem to be a bit bigger and better. Imagine if you can a blending of Sin City, Cannes and the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure. I've been to all three and Macau seems to have incorporated the best parts of each.

You might also be surprised by the sheer number of table games on the casino floor, which in an odd twist to other gaming floors seemingly outnumber the slot machines. The poker room is comprised of a couple dozen tables, each magnificently constructed and branded with the PokerStars logo. What's more, each table is surrounded by eight high-back black leather chairs — again each with a PokerStars logo.

As far as the chips in play, there are currently five denominations:

Yellow = 5,000
Blue = 1,000
Purple = 500
White = 100
Green = 25

There are no slot machines to drown out the chip crickets, and no smoke to pollute the lungs (it's a smoke-free room). Toss in bright lighting, well-positioned monitors and friendly service, and you have one of the best venues this tournament reporter has ever been to (and believe me I've been to a lot).

Macau really is a "City of Dreams," and in the 2013 APPT Macau Asia Championship of Poker, at least one player's dream of either poker immortality, a big payday, or both will come true.
