Day 1b Completed

Strong Showing by Cash-Game Phenom Dong Kim on Day 1b

Level 8 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Dong 'Donger Kim' Kim
Dong 'Donger Kim' Kim

On Day 1b of the PokerStars.net Asia-Pacific Poker Tour Main Event in Seoul, it was all about high-stakes online cash-game player Dong "Donger Kim" Kim. Kim bagged up 82,700 and is in strong contention heading into Day 2, while Takihiro Nakai (186,700) closed out the day with an overwhelming the chip lead.

Kim, who recently beat Nick "TCfromUB" Frame in an epic heads-up challenge for $120,000, will be trying add a tournament title to his poker résumé and his hopes are very much alive. The pro with South Korean roots played one of the biggest pots of the day when his river shove with the nut flush got called by a player who had a straight, and that gave him the chip lead for quite some time. However, Nakai got the best of him in a four-bet pot that gave him the advantage.

The second and final starting day of the APPT Seoul Main Event drew a crowd of 125 players, and 47 of those managed to survive. Together with the 116 players that entered on Day 1a, this tournament has a total of 241 players that created a prize pool of 645 million Korean Won. The winner of this event takes home ₩165,590,200, or about $151,000, and the top 27 places will get paid.

At the start of the day, a slate of familiar faces were in the mix, including Team PokerStars Pro Celina Lin, Winfred Yu, Raymond Wu, and ACOP Main Event winner Gabriel Le Jossec. The French Canadian had an awful day and was among the first to get knocked out when his queens fell to the ace-king of Daniel Kneafsey. Lin did manage to survive the day and will return with 33,400 on Day 2.

Freshly-minted Team PokerStar Pro Kosei Ichinose did not have a good day, either, as the former Supernova Elite got knocked out in the early goings. Other big names we lost on Day 1b included Stevan Chew, Raiden Kan, and MC HotDog. The latter, perhaps not too well known in the Western world, is a superstar in every Chinese speaking region as the award-winning rapper regularly performing at some of the biggest venues.

MC HotDog's performance in Seoul, however, was not as he had hoped, and towards the end of the day the birthday boy was knocked out. Before closing out the chapter of MC HotDog's tournament appearance we had to share the video of his rap about poker. Watch and enjoy:

When play resumes tomorrow, there will be 89 players in contention. Make sure to tune back in to PokerNews.com for a very lengthy second day of play. The goal is to play down to a final table, and the action kicks off at 12 p.m. local time.

Nakai Showing His Dominance Late

Level 8 : 500/1,000, 100 ante

Takihiro Nakai has gone unnoticed for most of the day as he quietly built himself a stack amassing 170,000 in chips.

In a recent hand he tussled against Dong Kim which could’ve resulted in two of the biggest stacks committing all their chips.

Nakai started proceedings with a bet of 2,200 from middle position before Kim raised it up to 7,500 from the hijack. Nakai then bumped it up to 17,800 and was called before both players watched the flop come down {2-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}{2-Spades}.

With just under 40,000 in the pot, Nakai stared down Kim’s stack, before announcing all in for around 150,000 ini chips. The bet had Kim well covered and he opted to let his hand go as another large pot was pushed over to Nakai.

Nakai now has 190,000 in chips as he clearly leads the rest of the field. Kim drops down to 70,000 and will still take through a healthy stack to Day 2.

Kurita's Late Charge

Level 8 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Yu Kurita

The action was caught on a {a-Diamonds}{2-Spades}{5-Clubs} flop with Yu Kurita checking her option from the small blind. The players in the big blind and under the gun also checked before the player in the middle position threw out 3,500 in chips. Kurita then raised it up to 8,500 which forced her next two opponents out. With the option back on the orginal better, he paused for a minute, before making the call.

The {10-Clubs} fell on the turn and Kurita instantly bet out 12,000. Her opponent thought about his decision for a moment before announcing all in for around 20,000 in chips. He was snap called and the cards were tabled.

Kurita: {5-Hearts}{5-Spades}
Opponent: {a-Hearts}{10-Hearts}

Kurita had flopped a set of fives and was in great shape against her opponent’s turned two pair. The {2-Hearts} completed the board improving Kurita’s hand to a full house. The Japanese player now moves up to just over 70,000 in chips late in today’s play.

Simba The Aggressor

Level 7 : 400/800, 100 ante
Jae Kyung 'Simba' Sim

Raymond Wu raised to 1,700 from middle position before Jae Kyung ‘Simba’ Sim bumped it up to 4,000. The player in the big blind made the call prompting Wu to muck his hand.

The flop came down {3-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{2-Diamonds} and the player in the big blind checked. Sim quickly reached for his chips and threw out one 5,000-denomination chip which was enough to take down the pot.

The 2013 APPT Cebu main event champion is still around with 26,000 in chips.
