Cabrera Building Speed

Life on Day 1 of Event 1 at the 2009 Aussie Millions Poker Championships is pretty good for Abel Cabrera, who has just taken out another player. Cabrera called that player's all-in bet of 1,450 chips preflop holding {A-Spades} {4-Spades} and was up against {K-Diamonds} {10-Spades}. Neither player improved on a queen-high board, allowing Cabrera to scoop the pot with ace-high. He's up to 12,400 chips.

Antonio Fazzolari Early Leader

Antonio Fazzolari is certainly amongst the early chip leaders. In his latest winning hand, Fazzolari was holding {10-Diamonds}{10-Hearts} and called down his opponent's flop and turn bets of 1,000 chips each.

On the river, his opponent checked to him with the board reading {9-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}{8-Spades}, which had given Fazzolari a rivered straight. Fazzolari bet out 2,000, and his opponent reluctantly made the call for his final 1,700 chips before open mucking {k-Spades}{k-Diamonds}.

Fazzolari continues to roll, sitting pretty at 15,300.

Tahtouh Straightens Out

Emad Tahtouh, sans soft cast
Emad Tahtouh, sans soft cast
When we last saw Emad Tahtouh at APPT Sydney, he was sporting a soft cast on one hand, the result of punching a poker table in frustration due to an opponent's rush. His luck is a bit better today. We caught up with him as a big pot was developing against a sole opponent. The board showed {10-Hearts} {K-Diamonds} {7-Hearts} and 3,000 chips were already in the pot. Tahtouh was faced with an all-in bet of 4,200. He called. His opponent showe {A-Diamonds} {A-Clubs}, but Tahtouh turned over a monster draw -- {J-Hearts} {9-Hearts}. The turn {Q-Clubs} was one of Tahtouh's mountain of outs, making him a king-high straight. That left his opponent drawing at the three remaining jacks. None of them hit the river -- it was the {2-Clubs}.

Tahtouh is up to 12,600 in chips.

Aristidou Out

Peter Aristidou Out
Peter Aristidou Out
Peter Aristidou raised to 300 preflop from early position and found one caller out of the big blind.

The flop landed {8-Spades}{7-?}{3-Spades} and the big blind checked to Aristidou, who made a bet of 550. The big blind then check-raised the minimum to 1,100 and Arisitidou made the call.

The turn was the {5-?} and the big blind fired out 1,600. Aristidou made the call. The river brought a repeat {5-Spades}, and the big blind moved all in. Aristidou made the call and tabled {A-Spades}{K-Spades} for the nut flush, however his opponent revealed {8-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds} for the full house to end the day for Aristidou!

Stop -- Hammer Time!

Hachem not calling much at his table today.
Hachem not calling much at his table today.
Tony Hachem wants everyone to know that he's here to play some poker. He and one opponent both checked a flop of {J-Diamonds} {6-Spades} {4-Diamonds}, Hachem fired out for 200 when the turn fell {8-Hearts}. His opponent called. On the river {K-Spades}, Hachem fearlessly bet another 600 chips, folding his opponent.

"Yes!" cried Hachem. He joyously turned over his cards, revealing {7-Clubs} {2-Hearts} -- the "Hammer", the worst starting hand in hold'em. He seemed quite pleased with himself as he raked in the pot, all the while staying loose courtesy of a table massage. Apparently the table massage is working. Hachem has hit a small rush, most recently turning a gutshot straight, to chip up to 8,500.

Unofficial Numbers

We've just received word that the unofficial number of entrants in today's flight is already in excess of 340 players with registration still open! With over 150 entrants already pre-registered for tomorrow and more expected to register on the day (being a non work day), the $500,000 prizepool guarantee has been blown away!

A great start to the Aussie Millions and hopefully bodes well for things to come!

Mick "Sticky" Guttman Takes a Hit

With the flop checked around six-handed, the board read {K-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}{K-Spades}{J-Spades} on the turn. A player in early position took a stab at the pot for 200 chips, only for another player to call, and then for Mick Guttman to raise another 600 chips from middle position.

Tim Woods then check-raised to 1,600 chips, and action then folded back to Guttman, who made the call. Woods led the {3-Hearts} river for 1,000 chips and Guttman made the call.

Woods tabled {k-Diamonds}{j-Clubs} for the nuts, and Guttman quickly mucked. Things are looking "sticky" as Guttman is now down to 1,350.
