Bodo Bluffs Laak

With the board reading {K-Hearts}{Q-Hearts}{A-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}{K-Diamonds}, Phil Laak tossed out 600 only for Bodo Sbrezesny to raise to a healthy 7,500.

Laak was confused by the bet amount, and with 6,900 to call, he flashed an {A-?} and folded before saying, "you might have missed a flush draw."

He was right, as Sbrezesny revealed {10-Hearts}{5-Hearts} for the bluff. Laak slips down to 23,000.

Two Short Stacks Double

Clonie Gowen and Billy Argyros are doing their best to accumulate chips before the end of the day. Gowen's {K-Diamonds} {2-Spades} was all in preflop against Joe Cassidy's {A-Hearts} {Q-Clubs}. Things were clear for Cassidy through the turn, {7-Hearts} {6-Clubs} {8-Diamonds} {9-Diamonds}, but Gowen hit the river {K-Hearts} to double up to 12,000.

One table over, Argyros was all in preflop with {A-Clubs} {9-Diamonds} and was called by a player with {A-Spades} {Q-Clubs}. Both players paired their ace when the flop came {2-Clubs} {10-Clubs} {A-Diamonds}. Argyros spiked a card to match his kicker on the turn, {9-Hearts}. He stood up and turned away from the table before the river came down, unwilling to watch. When it hit, Scotty Nguyen let out an "Awwwwwwww," as if Argyros had been rivered, but it was just a gag. The river fell {4-Clubs}, leaving Argyros in the clear. He has 7,100 now.

Carle Cut

Mitchell Carle
Mitchell Carle
Winner of the PokerPro event last week, Mitchell Carle has been sent to the rail after his chips were in the middle on a board of {7-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{5-Clubs}. Carle held an overpair with his {Q-Hearts}{Q-Spades}, but he'd run into an opponent holding {7-Spades}{7-Clubs} for top set!

The turn was the {3-Hearts} and river the {10-Clubs} and Carle couldn't catch up and he was sent to the rail.

Argyros Plays the Fools; Opponent Plays the Queen of Hearts

Billy "the Croc" Argyros is a colorful character who is well-known around the Crown Poker Room. The local rooting interests are often with Argyros; he'll need more than good thoughts and warm wishes to make a comeback in this tournament. Argyros called a pre-flop raise to 4,000. On the {7-Spades} {2-Spades} {2-Hearts} flop, his opponent moved all in for 6,300. Argyros made the call with {J-Clubs} {J-Diamonds}, but he was drawing thin against his opponent's {Q-Hearts} {Q-Spades}. The turn and river did not help him, coming {7-Hearts} and {6-Spades}.

Argyros is down to 3,100.

He's Back!

Andrew Jeffreys, during Event #1
Andrew Jeffreys, during Event #1
Andrew Jeffreys just stopped our field reporter to let us know that he's just doubled up through Kelly Kim. He wanted us to let everyone know, "He's back!!!" Well, we're not sure if he's all the way back quite yet, but he's certainly now heading in the right direction with about 23,000 chips.

Tran Straightened Out by Hachem

JC Tran
JC Tran
On a flop of {10-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{7-Hearts}, Joe Hachem moved all in from the small blind, covering the short-stack of his opponent JC Tran.

Tran was committed and made the call, with {9-Spades}{8-Clubs} for a pair and straight draw for the lead as Hachem flipped {Q-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}. However, the turn was the {J-Hearts} giving Tran a jack-high straight, but he was now trailing the queen-high straight of Hachem.

Needing a queen to chop the pot, the river was the {10-Spades} and Tran was sent to the rail as Hachem collects another pot.

Short Day for Dwan

Dwan's seat was empty for most of the day.
Dwan's seat was empty for most of the day.
Tom Dwan showed up briefly early, but didn't really make his presence known until Level 4. He leaves the tournament in Level 6, having run his ace-ten into an opponent's ace-king. Dwan did not win the hand. He'll probably drown his sorrows by heading upstairs to play some more heads-up PLO online.

Tony Hachem KO'ed by the Champ

Tony Hachem - eliminated
Tony Hachem - eliminated
Tony Hachem is out of today's tournament. He moved all in for 2,600 after Tim Balaban opened for 1,800. Talaban and Jeff Fenech both made the call. The flop was all diamonds, {8-Diamonds} {9-Diamonds} {4-Diamonds}. Balaban checked to Fenech, then folded after Fenech bet 7,000.

That left Fenech alone with Hachem for the main pot. Hachem had a diamond and a pair, {2-Diamonds} {2-Hearts}; so did Fenech, {7-Hearts} {7-Diamonds}. The board ran out {9-Hearts} {10-Diamonds} to make flushes for both men. Since Fenech's was higher, he won the pot and eliminated Hachem.
