Shak Crashes and Burns

We lost Dan Shak just before the break. He opened for 1,500, then called a raise to 4,000 by small blind Ben Charlton. Shak was clearly hoping to induce a fold on the {2-Diamonds} {10-Hearts} {A-Clubs} flop when he bet 6,000, then moved all in over the top of Charlton's check-raise to 20,000. Charlton, it turned out, called faster than you can say, "Flopped the nuts". He tabled {A-Diamonds} {A-Spades} against Shak's {9-Hearts} {9-Diamonds}. Shak didn't even wait to see if the board came running nines before getting out of his chair and leaving (it didn't).

Charlton is among the chip leaders now with 90,000.

Khoueis Busto

Team PokerNews player William Zemjaric has had an excellent day so far, chipping up to about 60,000. He recently sent home Suzy Khoueis. Khoueis was all in for 2,500 and was called in two spots, including by Zemjaric. Each live player checked the {A-Diamonds} {4-Clubs} {A-Spades} flop. Zemjaric extracted 5,000 when the turn came {8-Spades}. He went for another 10,000 on the river, but his opponent folded. That left Zemjaric heads up with Khoueis for the main pot. He showed down {A-Clubs} {K-Clubs} for trip aces and the winner.

Tom Rafferty sends Jennifer Tilly to the rail
Tom Rafferty sends Jennifer Tilly to the rail
Tails, Tom Dwan and Jennifer Tilly lose. Each player lost a recent coin-flip situation. Dwan called the all-in reraise of a middle position player and tabled {A-Clubs} {K-Hearts} against that player's pocket sixes. The board did not connect with Dwan's hand, running out {4-Diamonds} {7-Diamonds} {J-Spades} {9-Hearts} {4-Clubs} to drop his chip count back to 16,000.

Tilly suffered a similar fate with {A-Diamonds} {K-Hearts}, although in her case her whole stack of 35,000 chips was in the middle. She had to out-run Tom Rafferty's {8-Diamonds} {8-Hearts}. Each player caught a piece of the {A-Spades} {5-Diamonds} {8-Spades} flop, but the set of eights made by Rafferty was best. It stayed that way on the {J-Hearts} turn and {2-Hearts} river to send Tilly to the rail.

Yevgeniy Timoshenko Eliminated

Timoshenko Out
Timoshenko Out
With one limper in front, Yevgeniy Timoshenko opened from the cutoff to 1,200 and got a smooth call from the small blind, before the big blind pumped the action up to 3,600.

Tim Balaban, the middle position limper, then decided to make the call before Timoshenko moved his final 7,225 chips all in.

The small blind folded out of the way, and the big blind once again raised the stakes by pushing out a bet of 15,000 over the top of the all in. This forced Balaban into the tank and eventually he laid his hand down.

Timoshenko's {9-Clubs}{9-Diamonds} was in very poor shape against the {j-Clubs}{j-Spades} of his opponent and things wouldn't improve for him with the board running out {3-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{4-Spades}{10-Hearts}{6-Clubs} to send him to the rail.

Fenech Bluffs Balaban

Professional boxer Jeff Fenech knows how to take a punch. He may have been trying to teach Tim Balaban that lesson in a recent hand. Balaban got things started preflop by raising to 1,900. Fenech, who had position, reraised to 3,500. Everyone else quickly folded their hands, allowing the two combatants to go mano-a-mano. Balaban re-reraised to 8,900 and was called by Fenech.

The flop came down {K-Clubs} {K-Spades} {Q-Spades}. Balaban bet roughly one-third of the pot, leading out for 5,000. Fenech instantly raised him to 20,000. Balaban, who had roughly 15,000 left in his stack, tanked for well over a minute before open-mucking pocket aces.

"Good fold," said Fenech as he tabled {8-Clubs} {8-Hearts}! Balaban was predictably and understandably steamed. He went for a walk after the hand.

Steve Topakas Doubles

Topakas doubles through much to the delight of his fans
Topakas doubles through much to the delight of his fans
Steve Topakas has doubled through to 35,000.

Topakas took a three-handed flop of {2-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{5-Diamonds} holding {a-Diamonds}{a-Spades} and checked to his opponents. The first opponent bet out 2,400 and the second raised to 5,000. Topakas flat called, and the original bettor folded.

The turn {6-Hearts} saw Topakas check-call in for just under 10,000 chips. His opponent tabled {Q-Diamonds}{q-Clubs} and barring a river catastrophe, Topakas would comfortably double through. That disaster was averted with the {8-Diamonds} river.

Chips for Pickering

Nicole Pickering grinds on
Nicole Pickering grinds on
Nicole Pickering is trying to grind her way through this deep Day 1c field. She recently picked up roughly 5,000 chips when she induced a call of her 1,600-chip bet with the board showing {4-Clubs} {7-Clubs} {3-Spades} {A-Clubs} and another call of her 2,500-chip bet after the {A-Hearts} hit the river. Pickering showed down {J-Clubs} {10-Clubs} for the turned flush; her opponent flashed the {A-Diamonds} before mucking.

Pickering sits behind 24,000 chips.

Binger in Giving Mood

A player has just doubled courtesy of Michael Binger. All the money went in preflop with the player shoving for around 10,000 chips and Binger making the call.

Binger: {A-Clubs}{k-Clubs}
Opponent: {k-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}

The board ran out {10-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{2-Spades}{j-Diamonds}{6-Spades} and the player double through, dropping Binger to 33,000.

Balaban Doubles Through Timoshenko

On a flop of {2-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{2-Hearts}, Tim Balaban led out for 2,000 from under the gun and Yevgeniy Timoshenko made the call. They saw the {6-Diamonds} hit the turn and Balaban fired again for 5,000. Timoshenko then applied maximum pressure with an all in bet, with Balaban making the call for his last 11,800.

Timoshenko showed {7-Spades}{7-Clubs} for an over pair, but couldn't better the {A-Spades}{A-Diamonds} held by Balaban.

The river was the {10-Diamonds} and Balaban doubled through to leave the APT Macau champion Timoshenko down to 13,000.
