When Ya Gotta Go...

Level 1 : 500/500, 0 ante

Sorel Mizzi has just stepped away from the table for a moment. Actually, he sprinted away in the direction of the restrooms, making a comment about taking a couple hands off as he bolted out of the room. When you've paid $100,000 for a seat, you want to make sure you spend as much time in it as possible.

"Yeah... it's only 100k," Dan Smith said with a big grin and a shake of the head.

"Jerome!" Daniel Negreanu noticed Phil Ivey sitting down at the table behind him and chose to address him formally.

"You quit that vegan stuff?" Ivey asked back. "You're lookin' a little plump."

"Been drinkin' a lot," Negreanu admitted, rubbing his belly.

"I've never seen you that big."

"I know. It's the biggest I've ever been."

Alaei Finds a Double

Daniel Alaei
Daniel Alaei

When we walked up to the table, the turn was already out on a {7-Diamonds} {2-Spades} {Q-Diamonds} {A-Clubs} board, and Daniel Alaei had 12,000 out in front of him. He was heads up, and Tobias Reinkemeier called the 12,000 to see the {9-Hearts} on the river. When Reinkemeier checked, Alaei grabbed his last 42,000 chips and slung them across the line.

Reinkemeier tanked for a couple minutes, then made the call. We'd never get to see his cards. Alaei turned up {2-Diamonds} {2-Clubs}, and the worst set was the best hand.

Trip deuces double Alaei back around 125,000, knocking Reinkemeier back down to about 65,000 or so.

Hachem Doubles Through Negreanu

Joe Hachem
Joe Hachem

Daniel Negreanu check-raised Joe Hachem's bet of 7,000 to put Hachem all in on the {9-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{4-Diamonds} board. Hachem snap-called holding the {9-Clubs}{9-Spades} for top full house to Negreanu's {J-Hearts}{J-Clubs}.

Hachem was all in on the flop for 37,000 and doubled up to over 100,000 after the river completed the board with the {K-Clubs}.

Reinkemeier Cracks Negreanu

Once again we only caught up with the turn card here, the board showing {5-Diamonds} {J-Spades} {3-Hearts} {9-Diamonds} and Daniel Negreanu checking. Tobias Reinkemeier was in position, and he made a bet of 7,500 into a pot of just more than that. Negreanu called, and the {J-Hearts} paired the board on the river. Reinkemeier doubled his bet to 15,000, and Negreanu was game.

"That card might have saved you money," he said. "I was gonna raise." With that, he dropped the calling chips into the pot, and Reinkemeier turned up his {K-Hearts} {J-Clubs} to Negreanu's surprise. "Oh," he said, "or it might have saved me money.

Negreanu was passing his {A-Diamonds} {A-Spades} in between his hands, but he never flashed them to the table. After he mucked them, he caved to the peer pressure and admitted that he'd been dealt the two aces. They were second-best by the river, though, and that hit knocks Negreanu down to about half his starting stack.

Ivey Spikes a Four

Dan Shak and his 2010 Aussie Millions $100,000 Challenge trophy
Dan Shak and his 2010 Aussie Millions $100,000 Challenge trophy

From middle position, Sorel Mizzi raised to 1,500. Tom Dwan called from the cutoff seat, Daniel Cates called from the button, Phil Ivey called from the small blind and then Dan Shak closed the preflop action with a call from the big blind.

With 7,500 in the middle, the flop came down {9-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{2-Diamonds} and action checked to Mizzi. He bet 5,500 before Dwan and Cates got out of the way. Ivey tossed in the call and then play fell on Shak. The 2010 champion of this event took some time and then check-raised to 15,500. Mizzi folded, but Ivey made the call, creating a little rematch between him and Shak. Back in 2010 when Shak won the event, he had to defeat Ivey heads up to take the title.

The turn brought the {3-Spades} and both players checked. They also checked after the river completed the board with the {4-Spades}. First, Ivey showed the {4-Diamonds} and Shak stood up and leaned over the table to get a better look.

"You gotta be kidding me," said Shak as Ivey rolled over his other card to show the {8-Diamonds} for a flopped flush draw. Shak then showed the {Q-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds} for a better flush draw, but was outdrawn on the river to lose the pot.

Shak laughed a little and Ivey smirked as he raked in the pot. Maybe the two were fondly remembering two years ago when Shak beat Ivey heads up in this tournament to win the title. On the final hand, Ivey was all in with the {A-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} and had Shak dominated with the {A-Clubs}{7-Clubs}. Shak flopped a seven to win the hand and held from there to win the tournament. This hand here gives Ivey a tiny bit of revenge.

Two Pair for Reinkemeier

Tobias Reinkemeier checked the {Q-Spades}{5-Diamonds}{2-Spades}{K-Hearts}{J-Clubs} board and Daniel Negreanu fired 25,500 with 26,000 behind. Daniel Alaei folded and then Reinkemeier quickly called.

"You got it," said Negreanu as he showed the {8-Spades}{7-Spades}. Reinkemeier tabled the {K-Spades}{J-Spades} for two pair and won the pot.
