Matt Stout Defeats Scott Baumstein

Matt Stout Has Advanced to the Next Round
Matt Stout Has Advanced to the Next Round

With the board reading {6-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}{9-Clubs} and facing a 0-1 hole in his match against Matt Stout, Scott Baumstein needed to make a move, and boy did he ever.

Baumstein held the {A-Diamonds}{8-Hearts} and bet out for 1,250, only to see Stout respond with a raise to 3,400. After a lengthy tank to assess the spot he had put himself in, Baumstein decided to make his stand and he shoved all in. Stout snapped him off with the {9-}{5-} for a turned two pair, and when the board brought a brick on the river, he advanced to the Round of 32 to compete against either Joe Tracy or Shankar Pillai.

Eyster Fades Them All

Kevin Eyster just dodged the deck to even up his match against Jake Schwartz, fading flush and straight draws on two streets to win a huge pot.

The flop came {2-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}{7-Clubs} to give Schwartz a huge drawing hand with his {9-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}. Eyster held just the bottom pair and no kicker with his {2-Clubs}{3-Clubs}, but in heads-up play any pair on the flop is considered to be a strong holding.

The money went in and Schwartz could hit any five, eight, nine or diamond to take it on the turn, but the {2-Spades} improved Eyster's hand and not his.

When the {q-Hearts} missed him entirely on the river, the pot and the game went to Eyster, who moved to 1-1 in this best of three heads-up contest.

After taking down the first huge score of the series here at the Borgata Winter Poker Open by winning Event 5, Joe Mckeehen had momentum on his side entering his match against Dan Wach.

As they say though, every ride must come to an end, and Mckeehen's just did when Wach got there on the river.

Mckeehen was already in a one-match hole and needed to win two in a row to advance, something that looked likely when the money went in on the turn with the board reading {10-}{7-}{5-}{q-}. Mckeehen had a flopped set of sevens with {7-}{7-}, but Wach was still drawing live with {8-}{9-} for an open-ended straight draw.

River: {6-}

The straight was made and Mckeehen was sent packing, with Wach becoming the third player to advance into the Round of 32.
