A Moving Tribute to Mike "Little Man" Sica

Level 5 : 100/200, 25 ante
The Tournament Has Halted as a Moving Tribute to the late Mike "Little Man" Sica is Delivered by His Friends and Fellow Players
The Tournament Has Halted as a Moving Tribute to the late Mike "Little Man" Sica is Delivered by His Friends and Fellow Players

The flops have stopped at the moment, but a few tears are falling in their place.

The tournament halted for about ten minutes, as a moment of silence was observed for Borgata regular and local legend of the East Coast poker scene Mike "Little Man" Sica. You can learn more about Sica's life and times here, but judging by the genuine emotion just displayed by typically grim poker players, the man made a powerful impact both on and off the felt.

A group of Sica's longtime opponents at the table took turns euologizing their friend and fellow grinder - who passed away November 13th, 2013 at the age of 69, succumbing from lung cancer. Allen Kessler, Mike Dentale, Anthony Zinno, Will Failla, Michael Borovetz and Lee Childs each addressed their peers in the poker world to remember their friend.

Borovetz spoke about Sica's contribution to his own poker development, mentioning how the "Little Man" provided him with backing during the infancy of a career that now includes more than $500,000 in live earnings.

Dentale fondly remembered a Sica story in true poker player fashion - recalling the details of a bad beat suffered by Sica to the tee - and his message about Sica's boundless compassion and warmth, even after losing with pocket aces, appeared to hit home for many of the younger players in the room.

Zinno became emotional when remembering his poker mentor, before offering blue memorial bracelets for any player in the room who would like to commemorate Sica's life while playing.

All in all, the scene was a touching one, showing that every poker room is more than just a group of strangers trying to take each other's stack. Here at the Borgata - and throughout Atlantic City and the East Coast - wherever Mike Sica sat down for a game of cards, he found his family waiting for him.

Fish Pays Off Bazeley

Tony Dunst on Day1a of the 2014 WPT Borgata Winter Poker Open Championship

On a board of {8-Spades}{5-Clubs}{2-Spades}{10-Hearts}{7-Clubs}, Jacob Bazeley fired out 8,500 from the small blind. Darryll Fish, who was in middle position, thought for a bit before making the call. Bazeley showed him {5-Spades}{5-Hearts} for a set, and Fish forcefully mucked his hand.

Also, we've spotted Seth Berger and Tony Dunst in the field.

Matt Affleck and Fellow Seattle Seahawks Supporter James Routos on Day 1a of the 2014 WPT Borgata Winter Poker Open WPT Main Event
Matt Affleck and Fellow Seattle Seahawks Supporter James Routos on Day 1a of the 2014 WPT Borgata Winter Poker Open WPT Main Event

Everybody who follows poker knows that Matt Affleck sports Seattle jerseys as a matter of course, and the style choice has become Affleck's signature on the felt.

James Routos, however, is just a football fan proud that his team has advanced to the Super Bowl, and he showed up here today wearing a Marshawn Lynch jersey in support of the Seahawks.

Affleck went old-school with his choice of attire - donning the duds of Seahawk legend Steve Largent in a throwback to the team's past playoff success - one night after winning the Six-Max event here for an $88,643 score.

Seated across the table from Routos, the sight of Affleck and his doppleganger playing together was something to behold, but unfortunately for Routos the table talk about their team's chances this Sunday will have to wait.

Routos was just seen at the registration desk firing away for his second bullet, which means he went bust at Affleck's table sometime during the fourth level of play. Affleck, meanwhile, sits just under the starting stack as he looks to make it back-to-back wins here at the Borgata Winter Poker Open.

Hernandez Outflops D'Angelo

Level 4 : 100/200, 0 ante
Ryan D'Angelo, shown here in an earlier event.
Ryan D'Angelo, shown here in an earlier event.

A player under the gun opened for 500, and Ryan D'Angelo bumped it to 1,400. Laz Hernandez cold-called from late position, and the original raiser called as well.

The three took in a flop of {9-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{q-Hearts}. After a check, D'Angelo fired 10,600. Hernandez jammed for 28,250 more, and the player under the gun folded. D'Angelo called.

D'Angelo: {a-Clubs}{a-Hearts}
Hernandez: {9-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}

D'Angelo found himself outflopped, but a {2-Hearts} on the turn increased his outage. It was Hernandez who improved on the river when the {9-Spades} fell, though, and he took the pot with a full house.

Selbst's First Bullet Missing its Mark

Vanessa Selbst on Day 1a of the 2014 Borgata Winter Poker Open WPT Main Event
Vanessa Selbst on Day 1a of the 2014 Borgata Winter Poker Open WPT Main Event

Vanessa Selbst did not appear to be very pleased despite dragging a smallish pot her way, and a quick scan of her stack showed why.

None of her baby blue T5000 chips could be found, and an opponent to her right appeared to be the recipient. Selbst and the other player were seen discussing the previous hand that likely resulted in her stack being carved up, and Selbst - notoriously serious and focused while on the felt - did not appear to be enjoying the conversation.

Nonetheless, Selbst took down an additional 900 when she bet out with the board reading {6-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{8-Spades}. Despite the small win, Selbst still has about one-third of her starting stack.

Rheem Busted

Chino Rheem busted an early bullet.
Chino Rheem busted an early bullet.

Chino Rheem checked back the {4-Diamonds}{a-Spades}{7-Spades} flop in position against a lone opponent. Both were in early position. Rheem's opponent checked the {8-Spades} on the turn, and he then called Rheem's 1,350 bet. A {3-Diamonds} completed the board, and the first player checked a final time. Rheem tossed his entire 7,150 stack in the middle, and his opponent called fairly quickly. Rheem just pointed at him, indicating he had the winner, and the player turned over the {a-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}. Rheem mucked his hand and quickly left the table.

Anthony Zinno Pays Corrie Wunstel Off

Anthony Zinno on Day 1a of the 2014 WPT Borgata Winter Poker Open Main Event

With the board reading {5-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{2-Hearts}{2-Diamonds} by the river, and a sizable pot already up for grabs, Anthony Zinno checked over to Corrie Wunstel.

Zinno - who took down the 2013 WPT Borgata Poker Open Main Event for $825,099 - watched as Wunstel fired out a 10,000 bet, and he went deep into the tank to figure things out.

Eventually, Zinno mentioned something about ace-jack under his breath, before shrugging and making the crying call. Wunstel had no aces or jacks in hand, however, and his {k-Spades}{k-Clubs} took down the large pot.

Satellite Into the $3,500 World Poker Tour Borgata Winter Poker Open Championship at 3 p.m. Local Time

The World Poker Tour Champion's Cup is at Stake Starting Now
The World Poker Tour Champion's Cup is at Stake Starting Now

The World Poker Tour Borgata Winter Poker Open Championship is finally here, and for the first time ever PokerNews will be providing live coverage of the tournament straight from the luxurious Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa in Atlantic City.

The flagship event on the Borgata Winter Poker Open schedule will run from Jan. 26-31. The tournament features a buy-in of $3,500 with two starting flights and a $3 million guaranteed prize pool. Re-entry will be available on Day 1a for those who are eliminated before Level 6, and players eliminated on Day 1a may also re-enter on Day 1b.

For those on the fence about putting up $3,500 to play, there's still plenty of time to qualify through a satellite tournament. Borgata is hosting two more live satellites tonight, offering players a chance to win a seat to the WPT event for a fraction of the buy-in.

Here's a look at the qualifier schedule:

DateTimeEventBuy-in
Jan. 263 p.m.NLHE Championship Qualifier$700+50 (1 in 5 get a seat)
Jan. 267 p.m.NLHE Championship Qualifier (Re-entry)$500+50 (1 in 7 get a seat)

Looking back at the history of the event, the first WPT stop at the Borgata took place in Season 2 from Sept. 20-22, 2003, a few short months after Chris Moneymaker ignited the poker boom by winning the World Series of Poker Main Event. The 2003 WPT Borgata Poker Open had a $5,000 price tag and attracted 235 players, creating a prize pool of $1,175,000. The final table included former world champion Carlos Mortensen and fellow poker pro David Oppenheim, but in the end it was Noli Francisco who emerged victorious, making Borgata history in the process.

Since then, the WPT has visited the Borgata at least once every year. After the Borgata Poker Open buy-in was changed to $10,000 in Season 3, the WPT visited the venue twice in Season 4 with the addition of the Borgata Winter Poker Open. Michael Mizrachi won his second WPT title in that event, and it was subsequently won by big names like John Hennigan (Season 5) and Gavin Griffin (Season 6) before being removed from the schedule for five years.

A major change to the WPT Borgata Poker Open was made in Season 8. The buy-in was dropped to $3,500 and the tournament was changed to a multi-entry format. The number of entrants skyrocketed to 1,018 — the largest in WPT history — and well-known pro Olivier Busquet went on to claim victory and the top prize of $925,000.

The event grew even more in Season 9. Dwyte Pilgrim bested a field of 1,042 in dramatic fashion, winning his first major tournament in his own backyard. The largest WPT Borgata event ever took place the following year when 1,313 entrants took to the felt. Bobby Oboodi was the last man standing, collecting $922,441 and the honor of winning the biggest WPT Borgata event ever — a record that still stands today.

The WPT Borgata Winter Poker Open returned last year after the five-year hiatus, and Andy Hwang took down the championship event for $730,053. Hwang outlasted a field of 1,042 including a final table that featured eventual WPT Player of the Year Matt Salsberg (sixth place).
