Absurdity

Level 7 : 250/500, 50 ante
Vicky Coren
Vicky Coren

Taylor Paur opened to 1,200 from middle position. That's pretty normal, and Vicky Coren making the call wasn't out of the ordinary, either. But then the action came around to Fabrizio Riccio in the small blind, and he only had 200 chips out in front of him. That's 50 short, and the dealer asked him to put in the full small blind. And that's where the absurdity began. Riccio refused, claiming he'd put 250 chips out and not understanding what the problem was. The problem was that the first 50 chips were for his ante, and when the dealer collected it, Riccio never made up the difference. After maybe three or four minutes of pleading with Riccio, Coren began to get a little peeved, and she asked for the floor.

The first floorperson came over, and she tried to explain to Riccio what the problem was. He still didn't understand, and now he only had a single T100 chip out as the small blind, refusing to add any more chips. After another two or three minutes, a second floorperson arrived, and he too tried to coax Riccio into conceding. Coren was not at all happy with the time it was taking, and it did seem that the floor was more or less standing there waiting for Riccio to comply. He still would not. "I mean, can we do something?!" Coren started to grow loud. "The clock is running."

It was pretty clear that Riccio was mistaken. The table was ten-handed, and there was a single T500 chip in the center to account for the antes. Riccio still only had 100 chips as the small blind, and he still didn't seem to understand why he needed to put more chips into the pot.

Finally, after what must have been seven or eight minutes, he complied, peeked at his cards, and quickly folded.

The rest of the hand only took about 45 seconds. Paur check-called 2,000 on the {3-Clubs} {9-Clubs} {10-Clubs} flop and another 4,200 on the {9-Spades} turn. They checked through the {10-Diamonds} river, and Coren's {A-Spades} {J-Hearts} was good enough to give her that frustrating pot.

Even from our vantage point, it was even frustrating to watch.

Deeb KInda Wants to Show

Action folded to Andrea Vitale in middle position and he raised to 1,150. Shaun Deeb three-bet from the cutoff seat to 3,200 and action folded back to Vitale. He called.

The flop came down {A-Spades}{7-Hearts}{6-Diamonds} and Vitale checked. Deeb fired 2,200 and Vitale check-raised to 5,175. Deeb flatted.

The turn was the {2-Hearts} and Vitale bet 6,375. Deeb called again.

The river was the {10-Spades} and both players checked. Vitale tossed his hand into the muck and didn't show. Per EPT rules, Deeb didn't have to show. He asked if he had to and the dealer responded, "Only if you want to."

"I kind of wanna show it," said Deeb. He then turned over the {10-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}.

Aces Are Not Light; Weisner Drags a Monster

Melanie Weisner
Melanie Weisner

First into the pot, Luigi Diana raised to 1,200 in middle position. The proverbial can of worms. Two seats over, Melanie Weisner three-bet to 3,325, and Gianfranco Picone squeezed all in for 7,825. Diana quickly called, and the action once again came to Weisner where she sat pondering for a bit. Eventually, she made another raise to 13,075, and Diana once again called without hesitation. There was 10,500 in the side pot for the live players, and Picone was looking to triple up.

The flop came {2-Spades} {3-Diamonds} {5-Diamonds}, and Diana checked. Weisner studied again, and she made a small continuation bet of 4,600. Diana snapped again, and the {K-Clubs} landed on the turn. Weisner had 34,500 chips left in her stack, and Diana had about 45,000, and Weisner sized her bet at 10,350. Acting instantly on every decision, Diana check-raised to 23,000, a more calculating Weisner shoved in, and Diana called. Cards up, ladies and gents.

Showdown
Diana: {A-Hearts} {K-Hearts}
Weisner: {A-Clubs} {A-Diamonds}
Picone: {Q-Diamonds} {Q-Hearts}

The king on the turn proved to be the crusher for Diana, allowing him to commit most of his chips drawing nearly dead. The river was the blank {7-Clubs}, eliminating Picole and skyrocketing Weisner all the way up to 113,000.

On either side of her, Shaun Deeb and Sorel Mizzi were paying close attention to how that hand played out. Mizzi spoke first: "Thought for sure you had the airballs there." Deeb chimed in, "Such a good spot to have the airballs."

"Certainly a good spot for me to be light," she agreed, smiling as she stacked the biggest pot we've seen today.

Updates from the Past Hour

Level 6 : 200/400, 50 ante

While the bulk of the tournament was on dinner break, a few of the tables remained in action. Here's a recap of some of the play from that hour thanks for our good friends at the PokerStars Blog.

7:55 PM: Full House for Nguyen

Alex Kravchenko raised from the cutoff seat and Men "The Master" Nguyen reraised from the small blind to 2,150. Jami Juutila called from the big blind and Kravchenko folded.

The flop came down {10-Spades}{6-Spades}{4-Spades} and Nguyen bet 3,000. Juutila called to see the {10-Hearts} pair the board on the turn. Nguyen bet 7,000 and Juutila called.

The river was the {4-Hearts}. With tens and fours on board, Nguyen bet 15,000. Juutila made the call.

Nguyen tabled the {J-Spades}{10-Diamonds} for a full house, jacks over fours, and Juutila mucked his hand.

8:20 PM: Antonius Eliminated

Patrik Antonius was eliminated from the tournament in unknown action.

8:35 PM: Mitchell Eliminated

Under the gun, Evgeny Zaytsev was dealt a hand, but according to James Mitchell, who was in the small blind, wasn't supposed to get one. Zaytsev was issued a one-orbit penalty and when it began, Mitchell mentioned he had the button. The floor was eventually called and it was confirmed that Mitchell did have the button when the penalty began, so Zaytsev would have to wait one more hand.

"No wonder no one knows where the button is. You're all idiots at this table," Mitchell said as reported by the PokerStars Blog.

From there, Guiseppe Pantaleo raised on the next hand to 900. Piero Mormina called and then Mitchell raised all in for 7,125. Play folded back to Mormina and he called with the {A-Spades}{10-Spades}. He had Mitchell's {J-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} in bad shape.

The board provided no help for Mitchell and Mormina's ace-ten was best, shipping Mitchell out the door.
