Ilari and the Qualifiers

Level 2 : 75/150, 0 ante

Finnish PokerStars player Ilari Sahamies doesn’t look like a man to be messed with. He raised from early position to 425 and got 3 callers, all PokerStars qualifiers, Grzegorz Wyraz, Bastian Winde Harbo in the small blind and Siddharth Jain in the big blind. A flop of {a-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}{q-Clubs} was alomost as scary as the Finn and when it was checked to him a bet of 1,150 convinced the qualifiers to fold. Next hand Sahamies was under the gun and bet 425. Everyone got out of the way.

Liv’s Salad Soul Read

Level 3 : 100/200, 0 ante

Just back from the players break and 20 minutes obviously wasn’t quite enough for PokerStars pro Liv Boeree. She was still tucking in to the last of her big bowl of healthy salad and deep in a hand with Hui-Chen Kuo, a PokerStars qualifier from China. Boeree was in the small blind and checked the final board of {3-Diamonds}{a-Diamonds}{a-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}. Kuo hesitated and bet 2,800. Boeree sytared her down. Did Kuo have the ace? She decided no and made the call. Kuo had {j-Clubs}{8-Clubs} no good against the {10-Diamonds}{10-Spades} of Boeree.

No Help For Helppi

Level 3 : 100/200, 0 ante

John Helppi raised to 500 from early position and found a three-bet to 1,500 from an opponent on the button. Action came back to Helppi four-bet the action to 4,500 and his opponent called.

The flop brought down {6-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{8-Hearts} and Helppi moved out a continuation bet of 4,000. His opponent called to see the {3-Spades} hit the turn. Helppi slowed down with a check which led his opponent to fire 5,000. Helppi released a heavy sigh and tossing his hand away. This hit drops Helppi's stack down to about 12,000.

O’Dwyer Limps Along

Level 3 : 100/200, 0 ante
Steve O'Dwyer
Steve O'Dwyer

Fresh from his success in the Super High Roller, where he finished 3rd for €355,100, PokerStars player Steve O'Dwyer from Ireland is back in action at the Main Event today. He’s proved that he can adapt to almost any situation in poker, so it will be fascinating to see if he can navigate his way through such a large field.

Kenneth Kui limped from early position and O’Dwyer was happy enough to play along and put in his 200 chips to call. There were four more callers including seat 7, Glib Kovtunov in the seat 8 and the small and big blinds. Six players saw a flop of {9-Diamonds}{8-Spades}{3-Diamonds}. It was checked to Kovtunov who bet 600 and found his only caller in seat 7. They both checked a turn of {q-Clubs} and when the {9-Spades} came on the river Kovtunov called a bet of 1,200 and mucked when he saw his opponents {q-Hearts}{j-Clubs}.

Kim Back To Starting Stack

Level 3 : 100/200, 0 ante
Brian Kim
Brian Kim

Brian Kim's European Poker Tour Barcelona Main Event hadn't started too well, as he slipped down to around 18,000 or so, but he's not back to nearly the stack he began the day with thanks to a little backdoor help.

On the final board of {J-Hearts}{5-Spades}{3-Clubs}{10-Spades}{8-Spades}, there was approximately 5,500 in the middle. Kim had fired a bet of 4,750 after his opponent checked to him, and the player sat in the tank for a minute or two prior to making the call. Kim tabled the {Q-Diamonds}{9-Clubs} for a rivered queen-high straight and scooped in the pot. His opponent didn't show.

This is the second EPT event that Kim has played in his poker career, having first fired in the 2013 PokerStars and Monte-Carlo® Casino EPT Grand Final €10,000 Main Event last season in May. In that event, Kim's run was cut short when 12th-place finisher Clyde Tjauw Foe flushed away Kim's set of eights before Vasili Firsau eliminated him a few hands later.
