Leonid Markin Wins EPT Prague €50,000 Super High Roller (€771,360)!

The 2014 European Poker Tour Prague €50,000 Super High Roller concluded on Thursday after Leonid Markin topped the 51-entry field to win the €771,360 first prize and etch his name on the trophy. Markin battled through the impressive field and tough final table before he met with Paul Newey in heads-up play. The two went back and forth, but in the end Markin proved to be too strong for Newey.

The day began when seven players returned for final-table action, all guaranteed a minimum of €128,565 after the bubble burst the previous night. Along with Markin and Newey, the final day included Brian Roberts, Juha Helppi, Vladimir Troyanovkiy, Ivan Soshnikov, and Stephen Chidwick.

Roberts started the day with only seven big blinds, but it didn’t stop the American pro and former 2 Months 2 Million star from winning several hands and sticking around for almost two hours. Unfortunately, that's all he would last before he became the first player eliminated. Following a raise preflop from Newey, Roberts called and the flop came down {q-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}. Roberts thought for a minute before sliding out a bet only to have Newey shove over the top with enough chips to have him covered. Roberts eventually made the call with the {q-Hearts}{3-Hearts}, but he was in trouble against Newey’s pair of kings. No help came for Roberts, and the field was down to six.

Thirty minutes later and the table lost the first of its three Russian competitors. Troyanovskiy opted to move all in for half a million in chips after Markin opened with a raise to 160,000 from the button. The shove was called, and Troyanovskiy found himself dominated holding the {a-Hearts}{10-Diamonds} against Markin’s {a-Spades}{j-Diamonds}. Troyanovskiy took the lead when the flop came {10-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{4-Hearts} and held after the {k-Diamonds} dropped on the turn, but the river would bring the {j-Spades} to give Markin a higher pair and the winning hand.

The next elimination then had to wait an hour to lose before the next Russian player, Soshnikov, hit the rail. Chidwick raised to 160,000 from the cutoff seat before Newey bumped it up to 425,000 on the button. Soshnikov looked down at his cards before moving all in for 730,000. That was enough to scare off Chidwick, but not Newey. He called, and Soshnikov would need plenty of help holding pocket tens against Newey's pocket kings. The help he needed wouldn’t come as the board ran out {7-Clubs}{q-Spades}{q-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}, and Soshnikov took his leave.

The longest hand in the tournament saw the demise of Helppi, as the man from Finland finished in fourth place. Markin raised to 160,000 from the cutoff seat and was called by Helppi from one of the blinds. On the flop of {6-Spades}{2-Spades}{j-Clubs}, Markin threw out a continuation bet of 160,000 after Helppi checked. Helppi quickly check-raised to 400,000, but he was met with an instant all-in shove totaling 4.5 million from Markin. The shove took Helppi by surprise and he went into the tank — for eight minutes. During that time, he asked Markin several different questions to try and get a response that would make his decision easier. Finally, Helppi called only to have his {j-Hearts}{8-Hearts} dominated by Markin's higher pair of queens. The {3-Hearts} and {10-Diamonds} completed the board, and the field was down to three.

Three-handed play lasted almost three hours with all three players playing conservatively and not putting themselves at too much risk. Then in a crucial hand, Newey opened on the button before Chidwick came over the top with an all-in raise. Newey snap-called and was superior shape wiht pocket aces up against the younger Brit's pocket nines. The board didn’t help Chidwick, and he dropped down to just over 1 million in chips as Newey climbed up to almost 5 million.

Shortly after, Chidwick open-shoved from the button and Markin quickly called from the big blind with two aces. Chidwick’s {k-Spades}{9-Spades} was drawing dead on the turn as the board ran out {3-Clubs}{4-Spades}{3-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}, and that brought about heads-up play.

It could all have been over in one of the first hands of heads-up play. With blinds at 80,000/160,000, Markin raised it up to 480,000 from the button. After a short pause, Newey went all in for 4.4 million. Markin snapped and tabled his {a-Hearts}{7-Clubs}. He was behind to Newey’s {9-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}, and the board ran out {j-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}{j-Clubs}{2-Clubs}. Newey doubled to almost 9 million, whereas Markin dropped to around 4 million.

For three hours, the two exchanged pots and the chip lead constantly changed. On the final hand, Markin opened with a raise from the button before Newey moved all in for 4 million in chips. Markin instantly made the call and found himself in front with the {a-Spades}{10-Hearts} to dominate Newey’s {a-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}. Although the flop brought two diamonds, the remaining two cards would not help Newey and Markin was crowned champion.

Paul Newey - 2nd Place

In the final hand of the night, Leonid Markin raised to 480,000 from the button. Paul Newey then moved all in for approximately four million in chips and was called instantly.

Newey: {a-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}
Markin: {a-Spades}{10-Hearts}

Newey was at risk with the dominated hand but received some additional outs when the flop came down {8-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}. Unfortunately he would miss his sevens and diamonds as the turn and river produced the {k-Hearts} and {2-Spades}.

Newey pockets €557,090 for his efforts over the last three days.

Stephen Chidwick open shoved from the button and Paul Newey thought about it for some time before folding. Leonid Markin in the big blind didn't need much time though as he held {A-Spades}{A-Hearts}. Chidwick showed {K-Spades}{9-Spades}.

The flop wasn't much help to Chidwick and just worsened the situation he was in: {3-Clubs}{4-Spades}{3-Hearts}.

Chidwick needed help on the turn; either a king, nine or spade would keep the hope alive, but it wasn't meant to be. The {6-Diamonds} popped up and Chidwick got up from his chair and shook hands with Markin and Newey as he had no more outs to stay alive.

The {Q-Hearts} on the river was just there to make things official and Chidwick was already on his way to the payout. The British pro, who finished third in both the EUREKA Main Event and the EPT Main Event last year here in Prague, receives a cheque worth €255.070.

The two remaining players are guaranteed €557,090 now and battle for the €771,360 first prize. There seem to be no interest for deal negotiations on both sides, so play continues straight away.

Leonid Markin Bluffs it All (And Gets Away with it)!

Level 22 : 60,000/120,000, 20,000 ante
Leonid Markin
Leonid Markin

Leonid Markin opened the button for 320,000 and received calls from Stephen Chidwick (small blind) and Paul Newey (big blind).

The flop came {J-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{6-Diamonds} and both blinds checked to initial raiser Markin who fired 460,000. Chidwick made the call, Newey folded.

The {Q-Clubs} on the turn made Chidwick check again, and call the 550,000 bet that followed.

The {4-Clubs} completed the board and Chidwick checked for a third time. Markin shoved all in and Chidwick asked if it was more than 2.9 million, the stack he had in front of him. Markin counted his stack completely calm, and said it was 3,210,000.

Chidwick folded after some thinking. Markin smiled, showed {A-Spades}{8-Hearts}, and raked in the big pot.

Juha Helppi Eliminated in 4th Place (€269,360)

Level 20 : 40,000/80,000, 10,000 ante
Juha Helppi - 4th Place
Juha Helppi - 4th Place

The action started with Leonid Markin raising to 160,000 from under the gun. Juha Helppi made the call from the big blind and both players watched the flop come down {6-Spades}{2-Clubs}{j-Clubs}.

Helppi checked before Markin threw out a continuation bet worth 160,000. Helppi thought for a moment before raising it up to 400,000. Markin then instantly moved all in for 4.5 million which took Helppi by surprise.

The scheduled break had just started as Helppi went into the tank. A few minutes passed before Helppi began trying to get some answers.

“Do you have a good hand?” asked Helppi. “Will you show me if I call?” he added. Markin just shook his head.

“Tell me after the hand,” joked Helppi. Again Markin just shook his head.

Five minutes had passed before Markin turned to the clock before speaking out.

“Can you pause the clock. I just need to go upstairs and have a shower after this hand,” said Markin.

“You have clubs?” asked Helppi.

“I cant remember,” replied Markin.

“Can you check?” added Helppi.

“I have a rule to never look back at my cards after I go all in,” added Markin.

After an eight minute tank Helppi finally called with his 950,000 behind and the cards were tabled.

Markin: {q-Clubs}{q-Spades}
Helppi: {j-Hearts}{8-Hearts}

Helppi had run into Markin’s over pair and was not rewarded with his call when the board ran out the {3-Hearts} and {10-Diamonds}. Helppi was so eliminated in fourth place, the remaining three players are now guaranteed €355,070.

The action started with Stephen Chidwick raising to 160,000 from the cut off. Paul Newey was on the button and thought about his decision for a moment before bumping it up to 425,000. Ivan Soshnikov was on the small blind and looked down at his cards before moving all in for his remaining 730,000 in chips. Chidwick quickly folded and Newey called.

Newey: {k-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}
Soshnikov: {10-Clubs}{10-Spades}

Soshnikov had run into an over pair and was unable to improve as the board ran out {7-Clubs}{q-Spades}{q-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{7-Diamonds} to see his day finish in 5th place.

The remaining four players are all guaranteed at least €269,360 for their efforts today.

Still busy stacking the chips he just won, the next hand Leonid Markin was right back at it. Markin opened the button for 120,000 and his neighbor Vladimir Troyanovskiy shoved all in from the small blind for about half a million. Stephen Chidwick folded his big blind, Markin instantly called.

Troyanovskiy let out some frustrating sounding words in Russian as he found out he was up against {A-Spades}{J-Diamonds} with his {A-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}. The flop was {10-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{4-Hearts} though and the words sounded a little bit friendlier all of the sudden. The {K-Diamonds} didn't change that but the {J-Spades} on the river did.

Troyanovskiy shook hands with his five opponents and made his way to the exit, earning €159,170 for his sixth place finish. The remaining five players are now guaranteed €208,150.

Chidwick Back Doors Into a Flush and Wins a Big One

Stephen Chidwick opened the button for just slightly more than a min raise with five 25,000 chips. Paul Newey instantly folded his small blind, Juha Helppi three bet to 360,000 from the big blind. Chidwick made the call. Helppi had won many button versus big blind situations versus Chidwick before, but wasn't going to this time around.

Helppi bet out 375,000 on {J-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{5-Clubs} and Chidwick made the call. Both players checked the {3-Diamonds} on the turn now and the {6-Diamonds} completed the board.

Helppi checked to Chidwick. The British pro bet out 775,000 with just 850,000 behind. Helppi had a though decision and it took several minutes before he would make one. At one point he cracked a smile, seemingly puzzled about what to do. He then grabbed the 775,000 chips he needed to call and it looked like he was going to shove them forward. He changed his mind though, cracked another smile, and held on to them for a bit. He eventually did shove them forward to call.

Helppi's face would soon display disappointment as he was shown {A-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds} for the nuts by Chidwick. Helppi mucked.

Paul Newey raised it up to 120,000 from the cut and watched as the action folded around to Brian Roberts on the big blind. He made the call and both watched as the flop came down {q-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}.

Roberts thought about his decision for over a minute before sliding out a bet worth 110,000 in chips. Newey then tanked over his decision before placing in a large enough raise to have Roberts covered.

After a quick glance down at his cards, Roberts committed his remaining 580,000 into the pot and both players tabled their cards.

Roberts: {q-Hearts}{3-Hearts}
Newey: {k-Spades}{k-Diamonds}

Roberts had flopped top pair but it was no match against Newey’s over pair. Roberts would find no help as the board ran out the {8-Clubs} and {6-Clubs} to see him being the first player eliminated from the final table.

The remaining six players are all guaranteed at least €159,170 for their efforts.
