Day 1 Ends with a Rush for Ospina

Level 10 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Daniel Ospina
Daniel Ospina

We've reached the end of Day 1 of the 2011 PokerStars.net Latin American Poker Tour Peru Main Event. It was quite an end of the day for Colombian Daniel Ospina. After lurking below the radar for most of the day, he hit an incredible rush in the last two levels to bag up a tournament-leading and eye-popping 264,200 chips.

"The last few Main Events I played I didn't even make it through Day 1," said Ospina. "It was frustrating."

What started out as frustration for Ospina ended as frustration for some of his opponents and many of the other players in the field. Of the 350 that entered the tournament, fewer than 122 survived the day. Notable eliminated players included defending champion Jose Barbero, who was out early; LAPT Brazil champion Alex Manzano; Team PokerStars Pros Gualter Salles and Christian de Leon; and young guns Joe Serock and James Honeybone.

Tomorrow the survivors will return at noon local time for Day 2. Joining Ospina at the top of the leaderboard will be Lisandro Gallo (164,000), and a host of players in the range of 130,000 to 150,000 in chips. We'll play down to 24 players, a task projected to take eight levels.

Until then, you can find us at the bar.

That's Tournament Poker

Level 10 : 600/1,200, 200 ante

Two levels ago, our new favorite-named player Pablo Freschi was leading the field with 120,000 chips. With 25 minutes left to go in the night he's out of the tournament. After losing with {a-}{k-} to {a-}{k-}, it was all downhill for Freschi. He seemed to lose every pot and couldn't stop the slide to busto.

Upheaval on Table 2

Level 10 : 600/1,200, 200 ante

We're not sure exactly what happened on Table 2, but it seems that Daniel Ospina is running over the table. Shirley Rosario's stack? Down to 42,000. Daniela Zapiello's stack? Down to 37,000. Jorge Fajerlo's stack? Downto 83,000. Humberto Brenes' stack? Down to 55,000.

Ospina is the only one who seems to be trending upwards -- and in a big way. He has a tournament-leading 196,000 in chips. Ospina is a native Colombian who grew up in Phoenix, Arizona, USA but now lives in Colombia. While he is doesn't have much of a live track record -- just five lifetime cashes -- Ospina is well-known online. Last year he cleared a six-figure profit playing online MTTs.

With only 45 minutes to go in the day, Ospina will certainly be vying for the overnight chip lead.

Vamo Gallo!

Level 9 : 500/1,000, 100 ante

Several stacks are north of 100,000 now, including Juan Rodriguez, who doubled through former chip leader Pablo Freschi in a battle of Big Slick versus Big Slick (cue the flush for Rodriguez) and Nico Fierro. But right now none are taller than that of Lisandro Gallo, who is sitting behind 150,000 in chips -- a pretty comfortable stack at 500/1,000/100. We're not sure how Gallo acquired those chips but we'll be keeping an eye on him through the last level of the night.

Akkari Gathering Momentum

Level 9 : 500/1,000, 100 ante

Andre Akkari is building up a chip stack in the late stages of Day 1. He's getting lucky when he needs to and otherwise playing aggressively and playing position well. Akkari had the button for a raised ace-high flop, {10-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{a-Hearts}. His lone opponent bet 6,000 into the 8,000-chip pot. He called, leading to the {q-Spades} turn. Both players checked. When the under-the-gun player also checked the {5-Clubs} river, Akkari put out a bet of 10,000. That bet folded his opponent and won Akkari another pot.
