Day 1a of the 2011 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure Main Event welcomed 647 runners into the ballroom here at the beautiful Atlantis Resort and Casino, and after ten levels of play 272 players remain.
PokerStars Team Pro Pieter de Korver leads the way with 245,000 chips. The Dutchman won three key pots during the latter part of the day, one of which was a knockout wherein his pocket nines cracked a short stack's pocket aces. In another pot de Korver won a 30,000-chip race holding ace-king against an opponent jacks - an ace flopped and his hand held.
Ryan Olisar (227,700), Owen Crowe (213,000), Justin Scott (203,300) and Mathieu Martin (199,500) also ended the day with very healthy stacks.
The event saw plenty of big names come and go including Chad Brown, Arnaud Mattern, Noah Boeken, Ronnie Bardah, Vanessa Selbst and Dennis Phillips. There were plenty of survivors however including both Phil Ivey and Dario Minieri who had rollercoaster days finishing with 75,600 and 79,000 respectively. 2009 Main Event Champion Joe Cada chipped up to 105,200, Bernard Lee bagged 163,000 and defending champion Harrison Gimbel barely survived with just 22,700.
Day 1b kicks off tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. EST and both fields unite for Day 2 on Monday at noon. Make sure you keep it locked on PokerNews for this and every tournament at the 2011 PCA - goodnight!
Action folded to a player on the button and he promptly raised, the amount we're not sure. What is sure is that Phil Ivey called came along from the big blind. When the flop fell , Ivey checked, the button bet 2,200, and Ivey check-raised to 6,200. The button folded and Ivey took down the pot. He is looking to finish the night right around the 76,000-chip mark.
Tournament officials just announced that the remaining field will play five more hands and then we'll be calling it a night.
Erik Seidel was clinging to an extreme short stack this past level but unfortunatley he couldn't survive the day. He has been eliminated from the tournament.
Phil Ivey opened to 3,000 from middle position, an opponent called in the hijack seat and Victor Ramdin three-bet to 10,200 from the big blind. Ivey called, the middleman folded and the two saw a flop of . Ramdin led out for 14,000 and Ivey quickly folded.
The pot pushed Ramdin's stack to 84,000 while Ivey's dropped to 78,000.
Shaun Deeb was under the gun and put in a raise to 2,500. Action folded to the player in the small blind and he decided to reraise to 7,000. Deeb wasted no time in grabbing his stack, about 15,000 more, and moving all in. The small blind called and the cards were turned up:
Deeb:
Small Blind:
It was a race situation and Deeb fell far behind when the flop came down . Deeb removed his sunglasses and began to rise from his seat in defeat as the dealer burned and turned the ! Deeb had hit his cards and began to sit back down as the spiked on the river. The table let out a collective gasp as Deeb's hand was beat on the river and he was eliminated from the 2011 PCA late in the day.
When we arrived at his table, Corey "comandr_cool" Burbick was heads up with an opponent and the board read . Burbick checked, his opponent bet 17,500 and Burbick tank-called.
The river was the and Burbick checked again. His opponent calmly plopped over 50,000 into the middle, which covered Burbick's stack and Burbick thought for a long time before folding.
After that hand Burbick now has 38,000 chips to his name.
Lee Childs had been holding steady with a decent stack throughout most of the day. However, that all changed recently after a run of bad luck. He has officially been eliminated from the 2011 PokerStars.net Caribbean Adventure.
