Gruissem Reenters To Take The Day 1 Chip Lead

Level 8 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Philipp Gruissem
Philipp Gruissem

The 2013 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary, kicked off today with the $100,000 Super High Roller from the Atlantis Resort on Paradise Island in the Bahamas. The tournament, which is in its third year, attracted 47 players who accounted for ten re-entries—bringing the total field to 57. That number will surely increase, as registration is open to the start of Day 2—which will see Philipp Gruissem begin with the chip lead holding 771,500.

Gruissem actually busted the tournament early on but opted to re-enter. It proved a fruitful decision as he vaulted up the leaderboard in the last two levels of the night. For instance, 13-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner Phil Hellmuth, who was playing in the PCA for the very first time, took his seat in Level 8, and within 30 minutes, Gruissem sent him to the rail. Hellmuth was evidently heads up with the German on a board of {j-Spades}{2-Clubs}{9-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{5-Spades}, and led out with a large bet. Gruissem, who had the bigger stack, moved all in and Hellmuth called off. Gruissem turned over {j-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds} for a full house and Hellmuth flashed the {9-Spades} before mucking and hitting the rail. Whether or not he’ll re-enter remains to be seen.

Long before Hellmuth busted, the big story of the day was the fact that Viktor “Isildur1” Blom, who won the event last year for $1,254,500, was not returning to attempt a title defense. Nonetheless, plenty of pros turned out in force including the first-ever woman to play the $100,000 Super High Roller, Vanessa Selbst; the winner of this event in 2011, Eugene Katchalov; consummate high roller Phil Ivey; and Team PokerStars Pros Jason Mercier and Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier.

It didn’t take long for action to heat up; in fact, after just an hour a huge pot developed that saw the aforementioned Katchalov jump out to the early chip lead. It happened when a preflop raising war saw Katchalov have 22,500 of his chips in front of him only to face a raise to 45,000 by Fabian Quoss. Katchalov made the call and then check-called a bet of 40,000 on the {Q-Clubs}{3-Hearts}{2-Spades} flop. Both players then checked the {10-Diamonds} turn and the {9-Hearts} completed the board river. Katchalov checked for a third time and then quickly called off when Quoss moved all in. Katchalov tabled {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts} for top set, which bested Quoss' {A-Spades}{A-Hearts} to score the first double up of the Super High Roller.

Quoss was left with chips after that hand, but succumbed a short time later—but not before both Igor Kurganov and Jason Koon preceded him out the door. Speaking of which, Kurganov opted to take advantage of the event’s unlimited re-entry option and fired a second bullet, though little good it did him as he was sent to the rail a short time later. It was there David Benefield, Brandon Steven, Jeff Gross, Andrew Lichtenberger and Mike “Timex” McDonald soon joined him. None of those players, with the exception of Quoss, opted to re-enter, though each have the option of doing so prior to the start of play on Day 2.

With that said, there were a few eliminations who opted to jump right back into the action. In the last level of the night, Daniel Negreanu open-shoved for his last 70,000 or so from early position holding {K-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs} and received a call from Olivier Busquet, who held {A-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} in the big blind. The {4-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}{5-Clubs} flop actually gave Negreanu the lead, but the {j-Diamonds} gave Busquet extra outs. Unfortunately for “Kid Poker”, the {a-Spades} spiked on the river to give his opponent a winning pair of aces—with that, Negreanu immediately rebought. Others who busted and opted to re-enter right away were Tobias Reinkemeier, Paul Newey, Tom Dwan, Bryn Kenney, Isaac Haxton and Cary Katz, though Newey and Kenney both busted a second time.

Action is set to recommence at Noon EST on Sunday as the remaining 37 players return for Day 2 action. Be sure to join us then as the PokerNews Live Reporting Team brings you all the latest and greatest from the 2013 PCA!

Negreanu Busts, Re-Enters

Daniel Negreanu
Daniel Negreanu

Daniel Negreanu open-shoved for his last 70,000 or so from early position, and the action folded to Olivier Busquet, who called out of the big blind.

Busquet turned over {a-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}.

"No good," Negreanu said showing the {k-Diamonds}...and the {q-Clubs}. "Straight draw!"

Negreanu took the lead when the flop fell {4-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}, but Busquet had outs to eliminate him. The turn was the {j-Diamonds}, giving him extra outs, and the {a-Spades} spiked on the river to give him a winning pair of aces.

Negreanu was debating whether or not to re-enter tonight, then someone at the table suggested that he should in case he needed to fire a third bullet.

"That's right!" he shouted, then headed towards the nearest PokerStars employee.

Gruissem End to Katz's First Entry

Cary Katz busts then re-enters
Cary Katz busts then re-enters

Cary Katz was all in and at risk with {a-Hearts}{6-Hearts} on a flop of {a-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{4-Hearts}. Philipp Gruissem held {q-Clubs}{10-Clubs}, and made a flush when the turn produced the {5-Clubs}. Katz could still fill up with an ace or six on the river, but the {q-Spades} was no help.

Katz was eliminated, while Gruissem is up to 400,000 chips.

Katz quickly re-entered, and drew the same exact same.

Shortly after doubling, Jeff Gross lost a flip and is now eliminated.

Team PokerStars Pro Jason Mercier opened to 8,000 on the button, and Gross three-bet jammed for around 100,000 from the small blind. Mercier called, and the hands were opened:

Mercier: {8-Hearts}{8-Clubs}
Gross: {a-Hearts}{q-Spades}

The eights held as the board ran out {4-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}{3-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}, and Gross was eliminated.

Mercier Doubles Through Gross with Aces

Jason Mercier decided to be a Houston Texans fan for the day
Jason Mercier decided to be a Houston Texans fan for the day

We arrived at Table 2 during a flurry of raises between Jason Mercier (in the small blind) and Jeff Gross (in the big blind).

We were informed that Tom Marchese opened with a raise to 3,500 under the gun and Mercier re-raised to 9,700 from the small blind. Gross made it 24,500 to go from the big blind, forcing a fold from Marchese. Mercier made it 43,100 before Gross came back over the top to 87,500. Mercier went all in for 188,600, sending Gross into the tank for a good three minutes before he called.

Mercier: {A-Clubs}{A-Diamonds}
Gross: {K-Diamonds}{K-Hearts}

Plenty of paint hit the table, but the {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{J-Hearts}{3-Diamonds} board provided no help to Gross.

Isaac Haxton Thinks

Level 2 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Phil Ivey
Phil Ivey

Antonio Esfandiari and Phil Ivey recently played a friendly little game of "Johnny Lodden Thinks," but there thinker was not the Team PokerStars Pro, rather it was PokerStars Team Online Member Isaac Haxton.

The questioned posed to Haxton was: How many one-night stands will there be in the country of the Bahamas tonight?

"It depends on how many people bust this tournament," Philipp Gruissem joked.

Let the bidding begin!

Esfandiari: "Two."

Ivey: "Five."

Esfandiari: "Ten."

Ivey: "Twelve."

Esfandiari: "Fifteen."

Ivey: "Wait."

At that point, Ivey asked Esfandiari to review the rules. For those of you playing at home, if Ivey said "buy" at this moment, then he would have fifteen one-night stands and under. The bidding continued up to 24.

Ivey: "Twenty-five."

Esfandiari: "Bye? Or twenty-five?"

Ivey: "Twenty-five."

Finally, Esfandiari bid 51, and Ivey bought the number and the under.

Haxton's number? 3,000.

The entire table erupted with laughter.

"Maybe in Hong Kong..." Gruissem needled.

"Three-thousand one-night stands tonight." Ivey echoed, staring at Haxton.

Esfandiari won this round, but we're sure Ivey will be back for more.

The 10th Anniversary Of The PokerStars Caribbean Adventure Kicks Off With The $100,000 Super High Roller

Atlantis Royal Deck - venue for the spectacular PokerStars Caribbean Adventure party on January 13.

What better way to kick off the new year than with the 2013 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure — which starts today with the $100,000 Super High Roller. The PCA, one of poker’s most prestigious events, is celebrating its 10th anniversary, and this marks the third year the Super High Roller has been on the schedule.

In 2011, the event drew a field of 38 runners and saw Team PokerStars Pro Daniel Negreanu finish runner-up for a million dollars to Eugene Katchalov, who subsequently signed on as Ukraine's first Team Pro. Both men will be in action today, with Negreanu looking for revenge after Katchalov had two-outed him on the final hand.

Last year, this event attracted 32 entrants and saw the young Swede, Viktor “Isildur1” Blom, win his first major live tournament for $1,254,500. It was fitting for the then-Team PokerStars Pro as one year prior he revealed his true identity right here at the PCA. Unfortunately, Blom won’t be returning to attempt to defend his title as he’s opted to forgo this year’s PCA.

Nonetheless, there are already a plethora of pros registered for today’s tournament, and the latest rumors suggest more than 40 players will be in action. If that proves true, it’ll surpass the previous two years and establish itself as the biggest $100,000 Super High Roller in PCA history. Among the pros confirmed to play are Vanessa Selbst, Jonathan Duhamel, Scott Seiver, Philipp Gruissem, Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier, Justin Bonomo, Jason Mercier and Phil Hellmuth, who is playing in his very first PCA. We’ve also heard rumors that both Erik Seidel and Phil Ivey are in the house.

“We’re extremely pleased to have had such a fantastic response to this year’s PCA Super High Roller event,” said David Carrion, Director of Live Operations for the PCA. “It really is one of the most exciting tournaments on the live poker circuit, and with so many of the world’s best players confirmed to play, it looks like it will be an explosive three days of poker, and a fitting start to our 10th PCA celebrations.”

Today’s tournament features unlimited reentries, so players have the option of firing multiple bullets — this will no doubt juice up the prize pool nicely. The PCA and the Super High Roller kick off in just about an hour from now, so stay tuned for all the latest and greatest from the Atlantis Resort on Paradise Island in the Bahamas!
