...and That's a Wrap

Play has concluded for the evening with 47 players remaining in the field. Joe Hachem, Tony Hachem, Tony G, Jamie Pickering, Rayan Nathan and Peter Pratis were among some of the big names eliminated throughout the day. Tim Heath finished the day as our unofficial chip leader, closing shop with about 180,000 in chips.

Tomorrow at 12:10 p.m., the Day 1b field will take to the felt and compete for the chance to join the Day 1a survivors on Sunday for Day 2. The field is expected to be considerably larger than today's -- the tournament staff says they're anticipating somewhere in the ballpark of 230 runners.

Official end of Day 1a chip counts will be posted as soon as they are made available to us. Join us tomorrow afternoon for our continued coverage of the 2008 PokerNews Cup Main Event. Until then, from Melbourne, Australia, good night and good luck!

Potter Takes the Final Pot

James Potter
James Potter
From under the gun, Kenneth Damm raised to 4,200 on the last hand of the day. Action folded around to James Potter in the big blind and he asked for an exact chip count. "Can I get an exact amount, I want to know how much I'll have left if I decide to go to battle."

The dealer counted down Damm's chips and informed Potter that he had 52,300. Potter would have only 300 chips left if he lost all he had on this hand. With the newly gained knowledge of stack sizes, Potter made the call.

The flop came down {j-Spades} {4-Diamonds} {3-Spades} and both players quickly checked. The turn was the {8-Spades} and Potter checked. Damm bet 4,000 and Potter immediately called.

The river was the {Q-Clubs} and Potter led for 12,000 right away. Damm mucked pocket tens face up, to which Potter showed {A-Hearts} {Q-Clubs} and scooped the last pot of the night.

Simply, Wow.

Ligos reacts to the king on the river...
Ligos reacts to the king on the river...
The hand of the tournament just played out over on Table 30.

On a board showing {J-Spades} {5-Diamonds} {3-Clubs} Harry Ligos led out with a 4,100 bet. His opponent Jacob Flasterstein then raised to 20,000, which sent Ligos into the tank. Ligos asked for a count of Flasterstein's stack, and the dealer counted down a total of 47,300.

Meanwhile, Emad Tahtouh stood up from the table and told us, "This is a sick table. (The) average pot here would be 60k, minimum."

"Easy," Lisa Walsh concurred.

What happened next defines 'sick.'

"I'm all in," declared Ligos.

"OK, let's go," replied Flasterstein, as he proceeded to turn his cards -- {5-Hearts} {5-Spades} -- face up on the table.

"Wait a minute, he never said call," complained Ligos, who at this point is standing; his cards still sitting face down on the table with one hand cupped over them. "This isn't right, get a ruling. Get the floor," Ligos demanded.

Flasterstein's rebuttals were drowned out by Ligos' implications and a crowd quickly formed around the table.

Crown's Director of Poker Operations Jonno Pittock was then called to the scene and the situation was explained to him by both the dealer and one of Crown's floor supervisors. Pittock quickly ruled that because Flasterstein revealed his hand with action still pending (his own), the hand would remain live, but Flasterstein would receive a one-orbit penalty effective immediately following the hand in question. Everyone seemed mollified by the ruling and finally, Ligos revealed his hand: {K-Clubs} {J-Clubs}.

Next, the unthinkable happened... The dealer burned and turned the {K-Spades} giving Ligos four outs with one card to come, and then, fifth street... the {K-Diamonds}.

Flasterstein was visibly devastated, having gone from being a virtual lock to double up to the latest member of the rail in a little less than five seconds.

Ligos' mood on the other hand went from infuriated to euphoric, having just gone perfect, perfect to eliminate Flasterstein from the tournament. The mini miracle catapulted the Event 1 winner to 120,000 in chips.

"I had nothing to do with this!" quipped Tahtouh after the hand, shaking his head in disbelief.

Graeme Putt Out

Graeme Putt - Eliminated
Graeme Putt - Eliminated
Graeme Putt and Julian Powell got into a preflop raising war, resulting in Putt being all in for his tournament life. He turned over {K-Clubs} {K-Diamonds} and was in fine shape to double up against Powell's {A-Spades} {K-Hearts}.

Trouble found Putt on the flop, though, as the dealer spread out {Q-Diamonds} {A-Diamonds} {9-Spades}. The turn was a useless {4-Clubs}, and Putt was looking for the last king in the deck. Instead, the {8-Diamonds} came, sealing Putt's fate. He is eliminated, and Julian Powell has chipped up to 60,000.

Huntly Busts Fletcher

Dennis Huntly
Dennis Huntly
Patrick Fletcher raised to 3,100 from under the gun, before Dennis Huntly popped it up to 13,100. The table folded around and the action was back with Fletcher who moved all in for an additional 14,700. Huntly made the call.

Fletcher: {K-Spades}{K-Diamonds}
Huntly: {A-Diamonds}{K-Hearts}

Huntly would need to spike an ace and he did so on a flop of {A-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{9-Spades}. Another player at the table commented that he folded a king which left Fletcher drawing dead.

The meaningless turn and river were {3-Hearts}, {4-Hearts} as Fletcher departs late on Day 1a and Dennis Huntly looks set to be well placed entering Day 2 with 69,000 chips.

Air Jordanou

Bill Jordanou
Bill Jordanou
Bill Jordanou has just won a huge race to fly up the chip count leaderboard late on Day 1a and end the tournament of Ed Coughlan.

Jordanou had the overcards with {A-Spades}{K-Spades} against the pair of eights for Coughlan. Jordanou would need to improve, and that's exactly what he did when the board fell {Q-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{5-Spades}{J-Clubs}{J-Hearts} to give him the straight to collect the pot and jump up to close to 100,000 chips.
