Crazy Eights!

Scott Clements
Scott Clements
Scott Clements, from the button, bet 5,000 after his opponent checked a flop of {A-Spades} {8-Hearts} {6-Clubs}. The two saw the turn come {K-Clubs} before the other player took the initiative and bet 5,000. Clements announced he was all in, and was called before he could finish the phrase. Clements' opponent, holding a smaller chip stack and at risk, tabled {A-?} {6-?} and saw that he was behind the the three eights of Clements after Clements revealed he had two snowmen in the hole. The river was a meaningless {3-Hearts}. Clements shot up the leaderboard with his newly-acquired chips and now sits with 76,000.

Play Resumes

Players have returned from the dinner break with nine minutes remaining on the tournament clock in Level 6:

Blinds: 150/300

The Dinner Bell Tolls

The tournament clock has been paused while the players go on a 60-minute dinner break.

Also of note, Tournament Director Janis Sexton announced that we'll be playing two more levels when we return from the dinner break, rather than one, as originally scheduled.

Mistaken Identity?

Fernando Jacobo
Fernando Jacobo
Browsing over the Day 1 starters list provided to us by the tournament staff, the name "FERNAN JACOBO" caught our eye. The name should ring a bell for anyone who followed the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas this past summer.

Jacobo Fernandez is his full name, and he was a serious contender in the WSOP Player of the Year race, which was eventually won by Erick Lindgren. Fernandez cashed seven times and amassed over $600,000 in prize money over the summer. "Great!" we thought. Another big name here in little old Tahoe.

We paid a visit to this "FERNAN JACOBO's" seat, only to find that the man we expected to be sitting there, wasn't. Instead, we found the guy pictured here, Fernando Jacobo.

Jacobo stopped us during a recent rotation and asked if we were writing live updates. After giving him the spiel, we told him about the "other" Jacobo, and when asked what his name was, our Jacobo replied with a laugh, "Yeah, I'm a nobody."

Not anymore, Fernando! Welcome to the world of international poker celebrity. This post will surely spark a cult following and maybe even two or three fan sites.

Fernando currently sits with 15,625 in chips and a big ol' smile on his face.

Tay Nguyen Wins a Big One

Tay flops a monster!
Tay flops a monster!
On a flop of {10-Hearts} {4-Hearts} {10-Clubs}, Matt Brady bet out 3,425 and was called by Tay Nguyen. The turn brought a {K-Diamonds}. After the two sized each others' stacks up, Brady checked and saw Nguyen bet 3,000, which he cautiously called. The river came down {7-Hearts} and Brady checked once more while commenting, "That's so sick, I put you on kings." Nguyen took advantage of the opportunity and bet enough to put Brady all in. Brady called and showed {A-?} {A-?}, but it was not enough, smashed by Nguyen's {4-?} {4-?} and flopped full house.

Tay Nguyen has around 46,000, while Brady was left shaking his head as he made his way to the rail.

Gotta Beat the Champ to be the Champ

In a pot that saw Chris "Jesus'" Ferguson, Yosh Nakano, David "Big H" Paul, and chip leader Ty Stewart limped in. The flop came {5-Diamonds} {8-Clubs} {K-Diamonds}, before Jesus put out a bet of 1,300. Stewart made the call while the two others bowed out. The turn brought the {A-Spades}, and saw Ferguson initiate the action once again with a bet of 3,300. Stewart studied the board before folding and showing a {K-?}. Ferguson raked the pot and chipped up to 30,000.

Stewart still has the chip lead, but with the former champ at the table holding onto it is another feat in itself.

Kessler Talking Shop and Raking Pots

Allen Kessler was talking to a table mate about an earlier hand that ended strangely. He told the player, "That was bizarre, you may never see that again in your life." A few hands later, Kessler pulled in a pot holding {K-Hearts} {K-Spades} with a board of {K-Clubs} {3-Hearts} {J-Clubs} {3-Clubs} {A-Spades} . He stacked his chips, which amounted to 48,500. However, he seemed more interested in the table talk and quickly returned to conversation as the next hand was dealt.

Norman's Got Game

Ken Norman
Ken Norman
Former NBA basketball pro Ken Norman is quickly proving that his poker game should not be taken lightly.

Facing a raise from an unknown player and then a reraise from Mark Muchnik, Norman tossed a pocket pair of queens into the muck, preflop. The unknown player folded as well and Norman instructed the dealer to turn his hand face up. Upon doing so, when Muchnik saw Norman's queens, he turned his own hand face up to reveal pocket kings!
