Welcome Back for Day 2

The Main Event at the WSOP Circuit Caesars Las Vegas started up yesterday and 150 players took to action. At day's end, 66 of them remain and will be kicking off play at noon today for Day 2.

Leading the way is Dan Casetta. Although he may be relatively unknown, Casetta has over $234,000 in live winnings and also a six-figure score after winning the 11th Annual Battle of the Bay for $100,000. He comes into the day with 168,700. Nipping at his heels are Randy Dorfman (153,800), Matt Stout (141,500) and Randal Flowers (134,700).

Layne Flack hasn't been doing much in poker as of late. In fact, he's taken about six months off from tournament poker, but his return looks to be going pretty damn well. Flack controlled each table he was at and if it wasn't for running a full house into Anthony Yeh's higher full house, he might have finished at the top of the board. As it stands, Flack sits eighth in chips with 109,400.

If yesterday's speed of play was any indication of how it will be today, we should be able to easily reach the money. Top prize of nearly $200,000 should keep the players licking their chops.

Shuffle Up and Deal!

Cards are in the air. Because the field has already been reduced to 66 players, the tournament has been shortened by one day. We will play down to the final table tonight, which will likely take eight or nine levels.

The TV Table

There isn't any television production crew in the Caesars palace tournament room covering this tournament today. But if there were, they would undoubtedly have chosen Table 35 as the TV table. Here's the line-up:

Seat 1: Justin Young
Seat 2: Sam Stein
Seat 3: Steve O'Dwyer
Seat 4: Doug Lee
Seat 5: Dylan Collingwood
Seat 6: Thomas McTeer
Seat 7: James Carroll
Seat 8: J.C. Alvarado
Seat 9: Bryan Devonshire

That's not much of a reward for making it through to Day 2.

Just Quads for Yeh

Anthony Yeh and Denny Robinson saw a flop of {J-Diamonds}{J-Spades}{5-Hearts} and Yeh was first up. He checked and then Robinson checked behind. The turn brought the {9-Diamonds} and Yeh fired 3,500. Robinson called.

The river completed the board with the {3-Spades} and Yeh fired 5,500. Robinson mucked and Yeh won the pot., but not before he showed the {J-Clubs}{J-Hearts} for quad jacks. Nice start to the day for Yeh.

First Quads, Now a Set for Yeh

Anthony Yeh
Anthony Yeh
Blair Hinkle, Anthony Yeh and Wesley Mason all saw a flop of {5-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{3-Hearts}. Action was on Mason first and he fired all in for 22,600. Hinkle was next and folded after getting a count on the all in, but then Yeh made the quick call with a set of threes. Mason had an overpair with pocket tens.

The turn was the {A-Clubs} and the river the {Q-Clubs}, but neither gave the help to Mason that he needed and he was sent to the rail. Meanwhile, Yeh is pushing about 130,000 now.

I've Got a Feeling

Behzad Teranie started the action on Table 46 with a pre-flop raise to 4,000. He was called by Ken James from the button before small blind Aaron Been re-raised to 15,000. Only Teranie called.

Been continued on a queen-high flop, {6-Hearts} {4-Diamonds} {Q-Clubs}, leading out for 15,000. Teranie quickly and aggressively splashed a raise to 45,000 into the pot. Been thought things over for 30 seconds and then moved in for an additional 28,700. Teranie called.

Been: {Q-Diamonds} {2-Diamonds}
Teranie: {10-Clubs} {10-Hearts}

Been appeared to have been squeezing pre-flop and then wound up flopping top pair. He made an unnecessary flush with running diamonds, {5-Diamonds} {3-Diamonds}.

"I had a good feeling," Been said as the pot was pushed his way. "I had a flush draw." Teranie could only stand and mutter to himself as his stack was decimated to 12,000. Been is up to 162,000.

Emotionally Calm Poker Players?

The pre-flop action between Patrick Walsh and Adam Taskinsoy played out in a very standard way. Walsh opened with a raise; Taskinsoy moved in for an additional 14,900; and Walsh called. Walsh opened {3-Hearts} {3-Clubs}, in bad shape against Taskinsoy's {J-Diamonds} {J-Spades}.

As the board developed things became less standard. For one, Taskinsoy didn't even flinch when a trey hit the flop, {K-Spades} {10-Diamonds} {3-Diamonds}. Walsh also seemed about as emotionally level as you could expect. The {2-Hearts} bricked the turn. With Taskinsoy still in his seat, the dealer peeled the {J-Hearts} as the river to give Taskinsoy a bigger set.

"Notice how I didn't leave my seat," Taskinsoy said as he collected his pot.

"Notice how I didn't get up and celebrate," replied Walsh. He's down to just 9,000 chips.

McTeer's Stop-and-Go Fails

Doug Lee was a wrecking ball all day yesterday. He's picked right back up today. After Steve O'Dwyer opened pre-flop to 2,600, Lee re-raised his button to 12,000. Thomas McTeer, sitting in the big blind with about 21,000, called the 12,000. O'Dwyer quickly got out of the way.

McTeer moved his last 9,000 into the middle on a flop of {3-Spades} {4-Hearts} {7-Clubs}. Lee called with {Q-Spades} {Q-Clubs}, then stood from his seat as he waited to see whether he could successfuly dodge McTeer's six-outer, {5-Spades} {5-Hearts}. Neither the turn {A-Diamonds} nor the river {j-Clubs} improved McTeer's hand. He's been eliminated.

J.C. Alvarado Goes Out with Style

"I've been lectured by J.C.'s mom before about how I need to be more patient in tournaments," Steve O'Dwyer said as he mucked his hand pre-flop. Action moved to Dylan Collingwood, who opened for 3,000.

"Alright, let's do this," said J.C. Alvarado when it was his turn to act. "I call." He threw a matching 3,000 into the pot, leaving himself just 400 behind, much to the amusement of the table.

"You guys don't realize this is giving [big blind Sam] Stein more odds," Alvarado added with a grin.

"He already mucked," said Justin Young.

The rest of Alvarado's stack was in on a flop of {3-Spades} {Q-Hearts} {5-Spades}. His {K-Clubs} {6-Clubs} was in bad shape against Collingwood's {8-Clubs} {8-Spades}. The turn {4-Diamonds} gave Alvarado a better draw, but he was out of the tournament after the river {8-Hearts} gave Collingwood a completely unnecessary set.
