Picking Up Pots Preflop

Matt Brady from Day 1
Matt Brady from Day 1
As the blinds increase, the players are incorporating more and more preflop raises into play in order to pick up some much needed chips.

On one hand, after Matt "All in at 420" Stout raised to 4,200 from under the gun and Steve Wong flatted in position from the hijack seat, Paul Magriel reraised all in for about 30,000 or so. Stout and Wong both folded.

"Three times in a row!" exclaimed Magriel as he flashed the deuce of spades. He was implying that's he made moves with pocket twos the past two hands as well.

On another table, Theo Tran opened the action for 4,200 from early position. Action folded over to Matt Brady and he reraised Tran to 11,400. Everyone folded, including Tran, and Brady picked up some much needed chips.

Play for Brady has been pretty uneventful today. Maybe it's a lack of spots, maybe it's lack of cards, but either way he's had his patience tested as he waits to pounce.

The Master Gives Another Lesson

Men "The Master" Nguyen
Men "The Master" Nguyen
Men "The Master" Nguyen raised to 5,100 from the cut off and got reraised to 15,000 by Jeremiah DeGreef. Nguyen immediately shoved the rest of his 46,000 chips into the middle. When DeGreef called, Nguyen showed {A-Hearts} {A-Diamonds}, dominating DeGreef's {A-Clubs} {K-Hearts}.

The board ran out {J-Clubs} {K-Diamonds} {6-Spades} {5-Hearts} {5-Diamonds} to give Nguyen aces up.

After the hand, The Master is sitting on 98,000 chips while DeGreef has slipped down to 87,000.

Tommy Vedes Jacks Up His Chip Stack

Tommy Vedes made it 3,200 to go from early position, and was reraised by a player in middle position to 9,200.

Tommy eyed his opponent's remaining stack of approximately 31,000 and said, "I don't want another suck out like yesterday," before pushing his whole 50,000 stack into the middle. When his opponent folded, Tony showed his pocket jacks before scooping the pot.

Small Pot for Theo Tran

Theo Tran called a small raise preflop from middle position. His opponent checked the flop, turn, and river as Theo checked behind each until for the river. The board was {K-Diamonds} {10-Diamonds} {9-Clubs} {9-Diamonds} {5-Hearts} with the action on Tran after the final card.

Tran fired a small bet of 2,000 and his opponent called. "Ten!" announced Theo as he turned up {10-Clubs} {7-Clubs}. His opponent mucked and Tran scooped the pot.

Schanbacher Doubles

Jack Schanbacher moved all in preflop with pocket queens and was up against an opponent's pocket jacks. The board's only picture card was a king, and Schanbacher successfully doubled up. He was all in for 28,400 and now has about 60,000.

Dunst Goes Out in Style

After a player limped, Tony Dunst raised and Matt LaGarde reraised. The limper folded and Dunst put the rest of his chips in the middle. LaGarde had Dunst covered in chips when they revealed their hands.

Showdown:
Dust: {Q-?} {Q-?}
LaGarde: {A-?} {A-?}

The flop came down {J-Spades} {9-Diamonds} {2-Clubs}. The turn put Dunst in the lead when the {Q-Spades} slapped on the felt. But, just as Tony had pulled ahead, the dealer laid the {A-Spades} out on the river and LaGarde re-sucked to bust Dunst out of the tournament.
