Jonathan Taylor Wins WSOP Circuit Lodge Casino Main Event ($138,938)!

Level 31 : 30,000/60,000, 10,000 ante
Champion Jonathan Taylor
Champion Jonathan Taylor

After four full days of poker in Black Hawk, Colorado, the next 2012-13 World Series of Poker Main Event champion has been crowned. The well-deserved champion, who beat out 420 other players, was Jonathan Taylor, and he walked away with $138,938. In addition, Taylor won a beautiful gold ring, his third of the season. Even though he automatically gets a seat to the National Championship in May, he can’t use it, as he was the Casino Champion in Southern Indiana. This opens up an extra seat for one more lucky qualifier.

On Day 3, 11 runners returned, and it only took about 20 minutes to reach our final table. Bryan Campanello bowed out in 11th place when his {A-Hearts}{10-Diamonds} could not catch up to the {9-Spades}{9-Clubs} of Kevin Eyster. That got the field down to 10, and we only played for about five minutes before we lost Ting Ho. Ho turn an eight-high flush, but it was no good, as Taylor held the king-high flush draw. Ho had an open-ended straight flush redraw, but she didn’t catch it. Just like that, we had our final nine. Here’s how the stacks looked when we got started.

It took about 40 minutes to lose the first final table player, and that was Isaac Kirchner. Kirchner got it in preflop holding the {7-Spades}{7-Clubs} and was up against the {A-Spades}{K-Spades} of Allan Hedin. Hedin flopped an ace and Kirchner never caught up.

Ashly Butler was next to go out, and it was in quite a quick and shocking fashion. After losing a big pot the hand before to the set of sevens of Eyster, Butler busted in a huge pot to Rosie Paules. The board read {J-Spades}{Q-Spades}{Q-Hearts}{9-Spades}{4-Diamonds}. Butler check-called the shove of Paules, but mucked his hand when she tabled the {J-Clubs}{J-Hearts} for a flopped full house.

Play was seven handed for over an hour before Lawrence Blazer was eliminated. It was another preflop coin flip, and Blazer held the {K-Clubs}{J-Clubs} up against the {10-Diamonds}{10-Spades} of Benjamin Kim. The board ran down {Q-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{Q-Clubs}{10-Hearts}, and Blazer walked away with $20,877 in his pocket.

There was another lengthy delay between bustouts, lasting about two hours. Then, two players busted in 10 minutes. The first player to bow out was Kim, and he was the victim of a cooler. On a board that read {K-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}, Kim held {K-Hearts}{K-Diamonds} for top set, but it was no good, with Eyster holding the nuts with the {A-Spades}{10-Diamonds}.

Eyster played executioner again when he eliminated Paules in fifth place. The two got all the money in on an all-spade flop: {7-Spades}{6-Spades}{5-Spades}. Paules had the nut flush draw, holding the {A-Spades}{J-Clubs}, and she would need to hit that draw, as Eyster had the {K-Spades}{10-Spades}. The board was completed with the {Q-Clubs} and {A-Clubs}, and Paules walked out with $35,124.

Jerry Johnson busted in fourth thirty minutes later, and once again, it was Eyster who did the dirty work. Johnson had the {A-Spades}{5-Hearts} on a flop that read {J-Spades}{3-Diamonds}{A-Diamonds}. He was ahead of the {8-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds} that Eyster had, and while the turn was the {2-Hearts}, the river completed Eyster’s flush with the {9-Diamonds} to send Johnson out the door.

Hedin was the third-place finisher, busting shortly after the players returned from dinner. Hedin got the last of his 555,000 in the middle holding the {K-Clubs}{10-Hearts}, but unfortunately for him, Taylor woke up with the {A-Hearts}{A-Spades} in the big blind. Hedin flopped a flush draw, but it never came, and he was eliminated. That left a heads-up battle between Taylor and Eyster.

The two were virtually even when heads-up play started, but Eyster was the one that jumped out to a big lead. Taylor was out-chipped 2-1 when he won a crucial coin flip. Taylor’s {5-Hearts}{5-Diamonds} held up against the {A-Hearts}{10-Hearts} of Eyster with the board running out {3-Spades}{8-Spades}{8-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{4-Clubs}. From there, Taylor ground Eyster down until the final hand. With the board completed {7-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}{7-Spades}, Taylor bet enough to put Eyster all in. Eyster made the call, and Taylor tabled the {J-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} for a flush. Eyster mucked, and that gave Taylor the title.

It cannot go unnoticed how impressive Taylor has been on the WSOP Circuit this year. Taylor won a ring in both Biloxi and Bossier City late last year, then won the Casino Champions race in Southern Indiana, due in large part to his runner-up finish in that Main Event. This time, Taylor did one better with the victory.

Kevin Eyster Eliminated in 2nd Place ($85,852)

Level 31 : 30,000/60,000, 10,000 ante
Kevin Eyster- Runner Up
Kevin Eyster- Runner Up

Kevin Eyster made it 120,000 to go, and Jonathan Taylor made the call. The flop came down {7-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}, and Taylor fired out 100,000. Eyster made the call, and the turn was the {5-Diamonds}. Taylor led again, this time for 375,000, and Eyster made the call.

The river brought the {7-Spades}. Taylor thought for about 20 seconds before putting out a bet of 1.7 million. This bet had Eyster covered, and he stood up out of his chair. Eventually, he dropped a chip in for the call, and Taylor rolled over {j-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} for a jack high flush. Eyster mucked his hand, and that was all she wrote!

Eyster played a fantastic tournament, and he will walk away with $85,852.

Allan Hedin Eliminated in 3rd Place ($62,733)

Level 30 : 25,000/50,000, 5,000 ante
Allan Hedin- 3rd Place
Allan Hedin- 3rd Place

Allan Hedin came back from dinner with just 12 big blinds, and he had already shoved once without getting called. However, the second time he shoved all in for 555,000, Jonathan Taylor called him from the big blind as soon as he looked at his hand. When the cards were tabled, we could see why.

Hedin: {k-Clubs}{10-Hearts}
Taylor: {a-Hearts}{a-Spades}

Hedin was in a world of hurt, but the flop was as good as he could have asked for, coming {3-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{j-Clubs}. Hedin could now catch a club for the win, and the turn was black, but it was the {2-Spades}. Hedin needed a club and a club only, but the river was the {j-Diamonds}.

Hedin will have to settle for 3rd place, and the $62,733 that goes with it. Meanwhile, Kevin Eyster and Jonathan Taylor are now heads up, with virtually even stacks.

Jerry Johnson Eliminated in 4th Place ($46,579)

Level 29 : 20,000/40,000, 5,000 ante
Jerry Johnson- 4th Place
Jerry Johnson- 4th Place

Jerry Johnson opened the action with a raise to 80,000, and Kevin Eyster three bet from the small blind to 210,000. Johnson called, and the flop came down {j-Spades}{3-Diamonds}{a-Diamonds}. Eyster c-bet it to 175,000, and Johnson moved all in for his last 630,000. After a few moments, Eyster called, though he didn't look thrilled about it.

Johnson: {a-Spades}{5-Hearts}
Eyster: {8-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}

Johnson was looking to fade a diamond, and he did that on the turn, the {2-Hearts}. However, the {9-Diamonds} came on the river, and Eyster collected the pot to up his stack to 3.5 million, while Johnson will have to settle for 4th place.

Rosie Paules Eliminated in 5th Place ($35,124)

Level 29 : 20,000/40,000, 5,000 ante
Rosie Paules- 5th Place
Rosie Paules- 5th Place

The action has really picked up here over the last few hands, as we just saw Rosie Paules make her exit.

Kevin Eyster made it 90,000 out of the small blind, and Paules defended her big blind. The flop came all spades: {7-Spades}{6-Spades}{5-Spades}, and the action was lightning quick. Eyster bet out 100,000, Paules moved all in, and Eyster snap called.

Eyster: {k-Spades}{10-Spades}
Paules: {a-Spades}{j-Clubs}

Eyster had flopped the second nut flush, but Paules still had outs, as she had the nut flush draw. Paules had pulled out a number of miracles while behind all in, but her luck finally ran out, as the board finished {q-Clubs} and {a-Clubs}.

Paules made a great run, but she will have to settle for $35,124. Meanwhile Eyster, who won another huge pot against Jonathan Taylor just a few hands after, is back up to being our big chip leader with 4.2 million.

Benjamin Kim Eliminated in 6th Place ($26,883)

Level 29 : 20,000/40,000, 5,000 ante
Benjamin Kim- 6th Place
Benjamin Kim- 6th Place

Benjamin Kim was on the wrong side of a pretty sick cooler that saw him bow out in 6th place. Kevin Eyster opened the action to 90,000 from the button, and Kim three bet it to 200,000. Eyster made the call, and the flop came all paint: {k-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}. Kim led out for 100,000, and Eyster made the call. The exact same thing happened on the turn, the {6-Hearts}, and the river brought the {3-Diamonds}.

For the third street in a row, Kim fired out 100,000, and Eyster responded by raising to 625,000. Kim moved all in, and Eyster snap called.

Eyster: {a-Spades}{10-Diamonds}
Kim: {k-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}

Kim had the third best possible hand, but unfortunatley for him, Eyster slow played the nuts until the end. Kim will walk away with $26,883, while Eyster takes a commanding chip lead of 3.2 million.

Level 27 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante
Lawrence Blazer- 7th Place
Lawrence Blazer- 7th Place

On the very next hand, Lawrence Blazer open shoved for his last 271,000, and Benjamin Kim looked him up from the small blind. It was a race, as Blazer held {k-Clubs}{j-Clubs}, and Kim held {10-Diamonds}{10-Spades}. The board ran down {q-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{q-Clubs}{10-Hearts}, and Kim's full house got the job done.

Blazer will have to settle for just under $21,000, while Kim, who started the final table 2nd to last in chips, is now a threat with 1.15 million.

Ashly Butler- 8th Place Finisher
Ashly Butler- 8th Place Finisher

Wow. Ashly Butler went from 2nd in chips to out in two hands. On the hand right after the one with Kevin Eyster, Rosie Paules raised it up to 40,000, and Butler called in the small blind.

The flop came down {j-Spades}{q-Spades}{q-Hearts}, and both players checked. The turn brought the {9-Spades}, and Butler checked to Paules, who fired out 75,000. Butler clicked it back with a min raise to 150,000, and it was back to Paules. She put in a three bet to 450,000, and Butler made the call to put the pot over 1 million.

The river came the {4-Diamonds}, and Butler checked to Paules. She quickly moved all in, and Butler called even quicker. Paules tabled {j-Clubs}{j-Hearts} for a flopped full house, and a dejected Butler mucked his hand.

Butler headed to the payout desk, while Paules is our new chip leader with 2.1 million.

Isaac Kirchner Eliminated in 9th Place ($13,135)

Level 26 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante

Jonathan Taylor opened the action from under the gun +1 to 40,000. The next two players to act, Jerry Johnson and Allan Hedin, both called. It got to Isaac Kirchner in the cutoff, and he moved all in for his last 445,000.

Taylor and Johnson both got out of the way, but Hedin elected to make the call.

Hedin: {a-Spades}{k-Spades}
Kirchner: {7-Spades}{7-Clubs}

It was a coinflip for Kirchner's tournament life, and the flop was a disaster, coming {a-Clubs}{q-Spades}{j-Diamonds}. Kirchner was now looking for one of the two remaining sevens, but they never came, as it completed {9-Hearts} and {8-Diamonds}.

Kirchner will walk away with $13,135, while Hedin jumped up to 1.6 million.

Ting Ho Eliminated in 10th Place ($10,634)

Ting Ho
Ting Ho

We didn't catch the hand as it was happening, as we were working on getting photos up of the final table members, but we got filled in on what happened that led to Ting Ho busting just before the official final table.

The board read {8-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}, and Ho and Jonathan Taylor got in a raising war that saw all the money go in. Ho had flopped a monster holding {8-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}, but she was drawing very thin, as Taylor held {k-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}.

Ho could only catch two cards in the deck for a straight flush, but it didn't happen, as the {j-Clubs} hit the river. Taylor took the pot to bump his stack up to 1.7 million, while Ho is the dubious final table bubble girl.
