First Hand, Huge Pot

Gavin Smith
Gavin Smith
Action early in the Brasilia Room.

On a flop of {10-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{4-Spades}, Sean Dempsey bet 13,000, Rafi Amit reraised to 38,000, Gavin Smith repopped for all of his 166,000, and Jani Vilmunen called his remaining 67,500 as well. Dempsey got out of the way, and Amit called Smith's bet, leaving himself just 3,500.

The hands:

Amit {J-Hearts}{9-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{8-Spades} -- an open-ended straight draw
Smith {10-Spades}{10-Hearts}{J-Clubs}{6-Diamonds} -- he'd flopped top set
Vilmunen {A-Clubs}{5-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}{K-Clubs} -- the nut flush draw

The turn was the {K-Spades}, and Smith was still in front. But the river was the {Q-Clubs}, giving Amit the straight, and Vilmunen his flush. Smith's day was quickly over.

Vilmunen won the main pot, tripling up to 205,000. Amit took the side pot, pushing his stack to 270,000.
