Something Brewing

Robert Brewer - Event #48
Robert Brewer - Event #48
Robert Brewer bet 5,000 on the board of {A-Clubs} {9-Diamonds} {6-Hearts} {2-Hearts}. Amir Vahedi looked at him and then put Brewer all in. Brewer said, "I call."

Brewer was disappointed to see Vahedi turn over {A-Diamonds} {9-Clubs} for two pair against his {A-Hearts} {K-Hearts}. But then just like that, the dealer struck life back into Brewer with the {8-Hearts} on the river, giving Brewer a flush.

"Thank you God, you saved my life!" exclaimed Brewer as he clasped his hand over his heart.

Brewer is a 70-year-old actor/voice over. He's a former lawyer and playing in his first WSOP and according to Brewer, "I'm having the time of my life." He made the final table of Event #48 and came in fourth place, earning just under $275,000.

Northcott Sporting a Nice Rack

Heidi Northcott
Heidi Northcott
After a bunch of players limped in, four to be exact, Heidi Northcott raised on the button to 2,000. The player that limped under the gun reraised to 13,000 and was all in. All of the other players folded and then Northcott made the call.

Northcott: {7-Hearts} {7-Spades}
Opponent: {Q-Clubs} {Q-Hearts}

The dealer ran out the board {Q-Spades} {6-Spades} {3-Hearts} {A-Clubs} {8-Clubs} and Northcott couldn't get the suckout to win the hand.

After building her stack to over 90,000, Northcott dropped down to 75,000 on this hand.

A few hands later, Northcott chipped back up to get back over 90,000.

Sets A'plenty

Just before break, we witnessed a hand between Matt Flynn and Brandon Schaefer. Preflop, Schaefer was the raiser, making it 800 to go from under the gun. Flynn was his only customer, and he made the call from the big blind.

The flop rolled out {10-Spades} {2-Hearts} {9-Clubs} and both players checked.

Fourth street brought the {A-Spades}. Flynn checked and let Schaefer bet 1,500. He then came back with a check-raise to 4,500, prompting Schaefer to reraise to 11,000. Flynn moved all in and Schaefer made the instant call. With no further betting, the hands were turned up:

Flynn: {10-Clubs} {10-Diamonds}
Schaefer: {A-Clubs} {A-Hearts}

The river was a useless {8-Spades}, and Schaefer took down a big pot with set over set. He is up to 61,000 while Flynn is left with 40,000.

After the hand, tablemate Marco Marcom told the players that he folded {2-Clubs} {2-Diamonds} before the flop and that he, "Would have gone broke," had he seen the flop. Nice laydown for Marcom.

Introducing Paul Loh

Paul Loh
Paul Loh
One of the players doing well today is Paul "daprodigyta2" Loh. Loh won into the Main Event after some of his friends let him know that you can get in for cheap from online satellites. This marks the first time he is playing the Main Event, although he has played in other WSOP events before. He's originally from Hawaii and has never cashed in a WSOP event.

He's been playing the game for about eight years now, but just recently took three years off to pursue tattoo artistry. "I really enjoyed my time off from poker," explained Loh as he hinted towards understanding how hard it can be to make this game your living. After his time off, Loh came back to the game and played some WPT satellites in March to get back into things.

Some of the money Loh had saved up to open his own tattoo parlor has gone towards this year's WSOP adventures and he hopes to do really well. He also hopes to eventually have the opportunity to play in some EPT and LAPT events along the way.

His fiance Shelly will be keeping her fingers crossed as she hopes that Paul can do well in the granddaddy of all poker events.

Katsutani Tsunami

This hand happened just before the break. On a flop of {6-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}, a player in early position shoved his remaining 15,000 in the middle, and the next player to act called his bet. That's when Jason Katsutani reraised all in over the top. His opponent thought for a couple of minutes, then called with remaining chips.

The initial raiser showed {Q-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} for a flush draw. The player who had called Katsutani's all-in showed {A-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} for the nut flush draw. And Katsutani showed {4-Clubs}{4-Hearts} for a set of fours.

The {2-Spades} dropped on the turn, giving Katsutani a full house and ending the day for both of his opponents.

Katsutani is now up to 123,000.
