Svetlana Shorted

Svetlana Gromenkova, who started the day with roughly 98,000, just took a big hit to her stack.

On a flop of {9-Hearts} {4-Hearts} {7-Clubs}, Hornet Stephanie check-called Svetlana's 5,000 bet. The turn brought the {5-Spades} and Svetlana raised 9,000 after Hornet checked. Hornet raised all-in for 29,000 and Svetlana called. Svetlana showed pocket aces while Hornet turned over pocket nines for a flopped set.

Svetlana couldn't pick up an ace on the river and is down to 9,000 after the hand.

A 6 is Good for Toto

With the board reading {7-Spades} {7-Clubs} {3-Diamonds} {6-Spades} on the turn, the small blind checked, Toto Leonidas bet 3,500, the button called and the small blind folded. The river was the {J-Spades}. Leonidas fired out another 4,000 and the button called.

"I just got a 6," said Leonidas, rolling over {4-Spades} {6-Diamonds}. The button mucked.

Leonidas is now up to 66,000.

What a Read!

Mark Garner opened the pot for 1,400 and was called by the cutoff and the big blind. Those three players took a highly coordinated flop of {Q-Diamonds} {J-Clubs} {10-Diamonds}. The big blind checked to Garner, who bet 2,700. Only the cutoff called.

Both remaining players checked the {7-Diamonds} turn. When the river fell {3-Diamonds}, Garner bet 3,200 and the cutoff raised to 6,400.

"I know you don't have the ace of diamonds," said Garner. He reraised to 13,000. The cutoff mulled it over for a bit and then folded.

As he raked in the pot, Garner opened his hand: {K-Clubs} {10-Hearts}, drawing gasps of surprise and raised eyebrows from almost everyone at the table. Garner is up to 182,000.

Baxter Hits Century Mark

Billy Baxter - day 1a
Billy Baxter - day 1a
Billy Baxter was all in with Quan Tran. Baxter held queens and Tran had jacks. Tran was able to suck out on the turn when all the money went in. The board read {10-Clubs} {9-Hearts} {2-Diamonds} {J-Spades}.

The dealer announced that there was an all-in and a call on table 25 and then revealed the river card... the {Q-Diamonds}. Baxter was able to pull back the hand and eliminate Tran to move up to 100,000.

Monnette held {K-Hearts} {K-Diamonds} and his opponent held {Q-Clubs} {Q-Diamonds}.

Buy the Book

Barry Greenstein
Barry Greenstein
After a recent hand completed in which Richard Burns won, Burns turned to tablemate Barry Greenstein and as he collected his chips asked "Barry, what do you do there?"

"What?" asked Greenstein. "What do you do there, with that hand?" clarified Burns.

Greenstein shrugged, politely declining to go too deep into a post-hand analysis at the table.

Greenstein is still sitting on the short stack with a little over 10,000. A copy of his book, Ace on the River, sits under his chair, destined to be awarded to the player who busts him, if that happens.

On Hands and Knees

It's surprising that this doesn't happen more often, but a player who was moving to another table just spilled two racks full of chips all over the floor. There are a quartet of floorpersons scouring the area helping him pick up chips and make sure that he didn't miss any. Fortunately for him brightly colored poker chips are easy to pick out against the Amazon Room's reddish-brown/beige/gold/whatever carpeting.

I Got the Nuts

Maurice Hawkins raised to 1,500 before Niklas Flisberg reraised to 5,000. The call was made and the flop came {7-Diamonds} {A-Clubs} {K-Diamonds}. Flisberg bet 8,000 and Hawkins moved all in.

As Flisberg was dwelling the call, Hawkins was telling him not to call as he was holding the nuts. The floor was called as Hawkins was pushing the boundaries on what he could say and he was duly given a warning.

Flisberg made the call with {A-?} {Q-?} and he was ahead of his over-talkative opponent's {A-?} {J-?}. The turn and the river bricked, enabling Flisberg to reach 69,000, whereas Hawkins is down to 45,000.

Adams Takes Another Hit

Brandon Adams - Day 1
Brandon Adams - Day 1
With 5,000 in the pot, Brandon Adams bet 3,000 with the board showing {J-Clubs} {2-Spades} {2-Diamonds}. His lone opponent, Paul Kitsos, raised to 9,000. Adams made the call, then check-called a bet of 8,000 on a turn of {3-Diamonds}. Both players checked the river {6-Clubs} through. Kitsos showed {J-Diamonds} {9-Spades} to drag the pot.

Adams is down to 151,000 chips.
