Day 2 Completed

Day 2 Concludes

Daniel Makowsky
Daniel Makowsky
As is becoming typical for Day 2's here in the newly-structured World Series of Poker, we've reached the 3:00am cutoff time before the field was able to play all the way down to the final table. The action was quick at times, but things ground to the predictable halt as the hours dragged on. The last elimination came some 75 minutes before the clock expired, and knockouts were hard to come by for the last several hours in truth.

Ninety-nine players unbagged their chips some 13 hours ago as Day 2 dawned, and just 18 of them still have chips to bag up as the day concludes. Jamie Rosen began play with the chip lead, and he has ridden that big stack deep into the night. He bagged up 178,000 chips tonight, good enough to put him in the middle of the pack.

Over the course of the day though, two players really began to pull away from the field. Daniel Makowsky is now your chip leader, cramming 561,000 technicolor chips into the barely-big-enough thick plastic bag. Right behind him is Rami Boukai with 508,000, and those two men account for about 30% of the chips in play. After those two, there is a big gap back to the third place stack of Ben Grundy.

That being said, it's still clearly anyone's game. The remaining 18 players will return at 1:00pm tomorrow, and we'll plan to play it all the way out till the end. Hopefully by this time tomorrow night, we'll have our 10th WSOP bracelet winner of 2009. Until tomorrow, goodnight from the Amazon Room!

One Last Hand, One Last Stand

Ben Grundy
Ben Grundy
Omaha

It was the last hand of the night on Table #77 that brought us the most action we've seen the entire final level.

Jamie Rosen raised to 13,500 from middle position, and Ben Grundy, sitting to Rosen's left, made the call. The flop came {10-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}. Rosen bet 30,000, and Grundy raised all in for 116,000.

Rosen called, turning over {K-Spades}{K-Hearts}{10-Spades}{10-Diamonds} -- he'd flopped not just top set, but middle set, too! Grundy tabled {Q-Clubs}{9-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} for flush and straight draws. The turn was the {A-Spades}, and Rosen was still in front. But the river was the {6-Clubs}, giving Grundy the flush and the pot of 275,000. Rosen ends the night with 178,000.

Complete chip counts coming up.

Everything's Coming up Rosen

Jamie Rosen
Jamie Rosen
Omaha

Jamie Rosen raised to 13,500 from middle position, and Pawel Andrzejewski called behind. The flop came {K-Clubs}{A-Spades}{Q-Clubs}. Rosen checked, Andrzejewski bet 20,000, and Rosen called. The turn was the {4-Clubs}, and both checked. The river was the {Q-Hearts}. Rosen bet 40,000, and Andrzejewski made the call.

Rosen turned over {K-Spades}{K-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}{5-Spades} for kings full of queens, and Andrzejewski mucked. Rosen now has 301,000, and Andrzejewski about 50,000.

A Look Ahead

The latest word is that unless we get down to 10 or 11 players by the end of this level -- very unlikely, it seems -- play will stop then, which will put us right about 2:50 a.m. local time.

Bennani Takes Some Cabbage from Kabbaj

Hold'em

Surinder Sunar limped in from UTG, Najib Bennani limped as well from the hijack seat, and it folded back to John Kabbaj who checked from the BB. The flop came {7-Clubs}{K-Diamonds}{A-Clubs}. Kabbaj led for a bet of 9,000 -- half the pot. Sunar folded, and Bennani made the call.

The turn was the {4-Diamonds}. This time Kabbaj checked, and Bennani didn't waste much time betting 22,000. Kabbaj counted out his chips, peeking out from under the brim of his cap at Bennani across the table. Bennani sat motionless, his eyes safely hidden behind mirrored sunglasses. Finally Kabbaj let it go.

With that pot Bennani chips up to abou 165,000. Kabbaj currently has 67,000.

Stockinger Rising

Cornel Cimpan limped into the pot, and Ben Grundy raised it up to 11,500. Rami Boukai called before Sigi Stockinger moved all in for a total of 34,500. All three players would make the call.

The board ran down {2-Spades} {A-Spades} {3-Spades} {8-Spades} {J-Clubs}, with the three live players check-check-checking it all the way down. In the end, Stockinger tabled {A-Clubs} {A-Hearts} {Q-Spades} {10-Hearts} for top set. To his quadrupling delight, Sigi watched each of his three opponents muck in turn as none of them could table anything better. After that big win, Stockinger goes from short stack to middle of the pack, sitting now on 140,000 chips.
