Ivey Draws First Blood

Phil Ivey
Phil Ivey
Phil Ivey hasn't wasted any time getting busy here at the final table. He opened with a raise from middle position in a hand of Omaha-8 and found a call from Carlos Mortensen in the big blind.

They took a flop of {J-Clubs}{8-Spades}{7-Spades} and Mortensen checked, then called the bet from Ivey.

On the {7-Clubs} turn, Mortensen checked again to Ivey who fired a bet. This time Mortensen put in the check-raise with Ivey making the call.

The river brought the {9-Diamonds} and Mortensen bet again with Ivey making the call.

Mortensen tabled {3-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}{A-Clubs}{9-Clubs} however Ivey scooped with his {9-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{A-Diamonds}{2-Spades}. Ivey moves up to 275,000 with Mortensen back down to 390,000.

Set Good for Koral as Wong Slides

Steve Wong
Steve Wong
Tom Koral raised from middle position with Steve Wong and Ming Lee calling out of the blinds.

The flop landed {5-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}{4-Spades} and the action checked to Koral who bet out with just Wong making the call as Lee passed.

The turn brought the {8-Diamonds} and both players checked to see the free {A-Spades} land on the river. Wong checked, Koral bet and Wong made the call.

"I have a set," declared Koral, showing {A-Hearts}{A-Clubs}{3-Hearts}{Q-Spades}. It was good as Wong mucked. Koral has now chipped up to 160,000 with Wong back down to 193,000.

Steve Wong Eliminated in 9th Place ($16,517)

Steve Wong - 9th Place
Steve Wong - 9th Place
Steve Wong completed on third street with Dutch Boyd and Carlos Mortensen making the call. On fourth, Boyd led with both players calling until things got heavy on fifth street.

Wong led, Boyd raised and Mortensen re-raised with both opponents calling. On sixth it was an identical scenario, however this time Wong capped the action, before he was finally all in by the river.

Boyd: ({J-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}) {9-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{K-Diamonds}
Mortensen: ({2-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}{K-Hearts}) {6-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{10-Clubs}
Wong: (X-X-X) {5-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}{5-Hearts}

Wong's board looked threatening but he mucked, unable to better Boyd's flush as Mortensen took the low.

With that Wong was eliminated in 9th place for a collect of $16,517. There will now be a short break before the official final table of eight gets underway!

Your Official Final Table

The players have been introduced to the crowd, and interestingly on a table full of some of the biggest champions and legends in poker, the biggest cheer was for little-known Hungarian Peter Gelencser. Clearly the Hungarians are keen for a bracelet here this evening.

We have 26 minutes left in this level, with six hands left in the Stud-8 round.

Here's how they will lineup as the cards are back in the air!

Jon Turner - 607,000
Carlos Mortensen - 482,000
Ming Lee - 466,000
Dutch Boyd - 419,000
Eric Buchman - 236,000
Peter Gelencser - 219,000
Phil Ivey - 217,000
Tom Koral - 155,000

Lee Looms Large

Ming Lee collects the first significant pot of Stud-8. After Carlos Mortensen completed and fired bets on fourth and fifth streets, Lee led out on sixth and forced a fold from Mortensen.

Lee: (X-X-X) {4-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{A-Spades}
Mortensen: (X-X-X) {K-Spades}{J-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}

Lee moves up to 525,000 chips.

Mortensen Scoops In Stud

Carlos Mortensen
Carlos Mortensen
Carlos Mortensen and Peter Gelencser have clashed in a big Stud-8 hand. Mortensen was the aggressor the whole way, with a bet/three-bet on fourth street, and then bets all the way until the river. Gelencser called him down and the boards were revealed as follows:

Mortensen: ({3-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{5-Hearts}) {A-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}{4-Spades}
Gelencser: (X-X-X) {8-Spades}{4-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{6-Clubs}

Mortensen tabled a seven-high straight and six low to scoop the pot and leave Gelencser on the short stack as Mortensen flies up to 580,000 chips.

The Silent Assassin

Jon Turner
Jon Turner
We haven't mentioned a lot of Jon Turner during this tournament, which is rare for someone holding the chip lead. However Turner has gone about his business like a silent assassin, slowly claiming small pots and taking out his victims one by one.

In a recent had of Stud-8, Turner took down the pot after firing bets on fifth and sixth streets. Dutch Boyd released on fifth street, while Phil Ivey surrendered on sixth.

Turner: (X-X) {7-Hearts}{A-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}
Ivey: (X-X) {6-Clubs}{5-Spades}{Q-Diamonds}{6-Spades}
Boyd: (X-X) {K-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}

Turner has chipped up to 690,000 chips.

Ivey Gathering Momentum

Back to Omaha-8 now and Carlos Mortensen opened the action with a raise from middle position before Phil Ivey re-raised from the cutoff. The blinds folded and Mortensen popped it up again with Ivey making the call.

The flop fell {6-Clubs}{8-Spades}{8-Hearts} and Mortensen fired out a bet with Ivey making the call. The turn was the {10-Clubs} and this time Mortensen check-called the bet from Ivey.

The river brought the {J-Clubs} and again Mortensen checked, Ivey bet and Mortensen called.

Ivey tabled {A-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{J-Hearts}{Q-Spades} which was good as Mortensen mucked. Ivey is now up to 310,000 chips.
