Mind the Action!

Matt Matros benefitted from an opponent's lack of presence at the table. A player in early position limped into the pot for 100 before the hijack player raised to 250. Matros called that raise from the button; the early-position player called as well.

The flop came down {3-Spades} {10-Diamonds} {7-Diamonds}. The preflop aggressor made a continuation bet of 400 after the early-position player checked. Matros then asked the preflop aggressor to move his hand so that Matros could eyeball his stack.

"Oh," replied that player. "I didn't even know you were in the hand."

Armed with that information, Matros quietly put up a raise to 1,300. That raise won Matros the pot and boosted his count to 11,000.

Round Out the Names

With late registration set to end shortly, there are a few more players that have entered the tournament. Justin Bonomo is here now, as are Nam Le and Liv Boeree. Marcin Horecki is over in Miranda, and Eskimo Clark and Gavin Smith are in Brasilia.

One and the Same?

We bumped into John "the Razor" Phan in the hallway about a half an hour ago. He confirmed he was playing in today's event and showed us his seat card -- Table 303, Seat 7, in the Miranda Room.

We just did a sweep of the Miranda Room. Phan wasn't anywhere to be found. The player sitting at Table 303, Seat 7 was J.J. Liu. Now either Phan has a secret identity (have you ever seen Liu and Phan in the same room at the same time? Hmm? Have you?) or more likely he is busto.

Time to Soak Up Rays

After a raise and a reraise preflop, Maria "maridu" Mayrinck moved all in for 4,425 with {A-Spades} {K-Hearts}. Her opponent, Zack Gilbert, made the call and tabled {Q-Spades} {Q-Hearts}. Both players shrugged as if content to race for an early double up.

"I haven't won one of these yet," said Mayrinck. "Maybe I'm due." The dealer ran the flop of {4-Hearts} {3-Diamonds} {10-Clubs}. "Or maybe not. Nice hand," she said, tapping the felt. The {J-Spades} and {2-Spades} filled out the board, and Mayrinck could not improve.

"Early bust-outs are good," she reminded herself aloud. She wished the table luck, grabbed her coffee, and headed for the pool.

Table Captain

Captain Tom
Captain Tom
From the button, "Captain Tom" Franklin raised it up to 325. The small blind three-bet it up to 850, and Franklin made the call.

The flop brought {4-Diamonds} {A-Clubs} {8-Spades}, and the small blind continued out with 700 more chips. Franklin again called.

On the turn, the {4-Clubs} drew a check from the unknown player, and Captain Tom asked for a count on his remaining stack. After he was satisfied with the answer, he pushed out a bet of 2,100, enough to cover his opponent. After some deliberation, he surrendered his cards.

"Kings?" asked Franklin. When the small blind shook his head, Franklin pried further. "Not that good? I had you all the time."

Franklin is up to 7,600.

The Teddy Monroe Show

Nikolay Evdakov may want to stick around for a while. After managing to double up to about 2,800, Teddy Monroe took the seat to Evdakov's right. And as everyone knows, Monroe is usually good for a few laughs.

"I wanna fly to Russia," Monroe told Evdakov, holding his arms out to the sides like the wings of an airplane. "Russian women! You take me."

Evdakov pretended he didn't understand what Monroe was saying.

Hey Pacheco

Filipe Pacheco
Filipe Pacheco
Filipe Pacheco was crippled in a hand holding pocket sevens. In a heads-up pot, the two men watched the flop come down {A-Hearts} {K-Hearts} {7-Clubs}. After a series of bets and raises, Pacheco's opponent ended up all in with {Q-Hearts} {10-Hearts}. The turn and river were both hearts, and Pacheco was knocked all the way back under 1,200.

A few hands later, Pacheco was the one all in. He got the rest of his stack in on a flop of {3-Hearts} {5-Diamonds} {7-Diamonds}. He showed down {5-?} {7-?} for two pair, trying to survive against his opponent's {J-Diamonds} {Q-Diamonds}. Pacheco faded the flush this time, and his two pair were good enough to double him back up to 2,375.
