East Coast Versus West Coast

Greg Raymer is always good for a few quotes. There's a woman at Raymer's table that Raymer thought he recognized. He asked her if she was from the east coast of the U.S.; she responded that she's from the San Diego area. Raymer was surprised, because he recognized the woman and because most stud players are based on the east coast.

The woman responded that she primarily plays stud online and that she had played this event last year. She and Raymer (who formerly lived in Carlsbad, California) then began to discuss some of the San Diego-area card rooms.

Raymer's point has merit, however. More than most tournaments you see at the World Series of Poker, this tournament has a very heavy "east coast bias" to it.

Brown's Two Small Pair Good Enough

Brown: (X) (X) / {3-Hearts} {k-Spades} {8-Hearts} {7-Spades} / (X)
Arieh: (X) (X) / {j-Clubs} {2-Spades} {5-Hearts} {k-Hearts} / (X)

Josh Arieh started with a pair of queens, but his constant bets were not enough to deter Chad Brown from trying to draw out. Brown limped behind Huck Seed on third street, then was the only player to call Arieh's completion. Brown check-called fourth street, check-called fifth street, then called sixth and seventh streets after Arieh took the betting lead. Arieh flashed two queens and a third card at showdown; Brown showed {3-} {6-} {7-} in the hole for two pair, sevens and treys.

Glantz Boosted to 35k

Matt Glantz: (X) (X) / {5-Diamonds} {4-Clubs} {10-Hearts} {k-Spades}
Seat 5: (X) (X) / {9-Diamonds} {7-Spades} {4-Diamonds} {j-Clubs}
Shawn Buchanan: (X) (X) / {2-Spades} {j-Hearts} {7-Hearts}

Glantz had the option to bring in or complete, and opted for the later, getting a call from the player in Seat 5 as well as Shawn Buchanan. Both opponents called Glantz's bet on fourth street, with only the player in Seat 5 opting to do so on fifth street. Both players checked sixth street, and Glantz took the hand down with a bet on seventh street.

Break Time

The players have reached the first 20-minute break with little fanfare. The green (T25) chips are being colored up and raced off at this break.

Joining Us at the Break

That break ran a bit long so that the color-up performed and the very last registrants could be seated. David "Devilfish" Ulliott, David Singer, former WSOP Tournament Director Eric Drache, Gus Hansen, John Juanda, Tommy Vedes, David Oppenheim, Jean Gaspard, Annie Duke, Tony G and Erik Seidel all bought into the tournament during the break. The Big Clock shows 148 players now, eclipsing last year's mark of 142.

Ivey Flushed

Ivey: (X) (X) / {k-Diamonds} {a-Hearts} {j-Hearts} {4-Spades} / (X)
Opponent: (X) (X) / {4-Clubs} {5-Clubs} {3-Clubs} {k-Spades} / (X)

Phil Ivey is getting a massage and is fixated by the NBA game between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics right now. But it didn't stop him from completing his king on third street. An opponent behind raised, and only Ivey called.

Ivey had the lead on fourth street and bet out. His opponent called. Both players checked fifth street. That was all the incentive Ivey's opponent needed to bet sixth street and seventh street. We're not sure if Ivey could beat his opponent's {k-Clubs} {a-Clubs} {a-Spades} two pair, aces and kings, but we know he definitely couldn't beat his opponent's club flush.

Greenstein Slips, Climbs

Barry Greenstein: {j-Diamonds} {j-Hearts} / {6-Spades} {4-Spades} {j-Hearts} {a-Hearts} / {3-Diamonds}
Seat 4: (X) (X) / {10-Spades} {10-Diamonds} {8-Clubs} {5-Diamonds} / (X)

Greenstein had lost a good chunk of of his chips when he brought in on this hand. His opponent completed, Greenstein, raised, and his opponent re-raised with Greenstein making the call.

On fourth street, the player in Seat 4 bet and Greenstein called. However, on fifth street, he raised his opponent's bet, which was called, as was Greenstein's bet on sixth street. Greenstein made one last bet on seventh street, got the call, and won the hand with a set of jacks.

Greenstein is now back up to 21,500 in chips.

Forrest Growth

Forrest: (X) (X) / {q-Hearts} {10-Diamonds} {5-Spades} {5-Clubs} / (X)
Opponent: (X) (X) / {10-Spades} {8-Diamonds} {a-Hearts} {3-Clubs} / (X)

A three-way limped pot was eventually pushed in Ted Forrest's direction to add to his slowly-growing chip stack. Forrest bet fourth street and was only called by one player. Both e and his opponent checked fifth street. On sixth, Forrest checked his open pair of fives and then called a single bet. His river bet went uncalled.
