Battle of the Team PokerStars Pros

Team USA member Gavin Griffin
Team USA member Gavin Griffin

Team PokerStars Pro turned out in force today. While more players could be on their way, two teams are in the lead for pro turnout. Team Canada is represented by Daniel Negreanu, Pat Pezzin, and Ahn Van Nguyen. Team Netherlands gets the gold with four members though. Lex Veldhuis, Noah Boeken, Joep van den Bijgaart, and Marcel Luske are already making waves out there. Andre Akkari is pulling all the weight for Team Brazil, Jose Ignacio Barbero's got Team Argentina's fate in his hands, Gavin Griffin is carrying Team USA, and Bill Chen's got it covered for Friends of PokerStars.

In the spirit of adding competition where none is needed, we'll keep you updated on the teams' combined stacks as the day goes on.

Tilly Trending Up

Jennifer Tilly
Jennifer Tilly

Jennifer Tilly has nearly doubled her stack in the first two levels of Event #18.

She called a raise in late position and so too did a player on the button and a player in the big blind. The flop came {J-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{2-Diamonds} and the original raiser bet when checked to. Tilly put in a second bet and received two callers including the original raiser.

The turn was the {2-Clubs} and this time the original raiser checked. Tilly bet, the player on the button folded and the original raiser called.

The river brought the {6-Hearts} and Tilly bet again. The player on the button called and quickly mucked when Tilly tabled {A-Hearts}{2-Hearts} for a flush.

Her stack now sits at 11,200 chips.

Luske Trips

Five players, including Marcel Luske and Matt Lefkowitz, saw a flop of {8-Clubs}{J-Spades}{9-Diamonds} and all five players checked.

The turn brought the {J-Clubs} and a player in the small blind bet. Only Luske and Lefkowitz called and the river was the {5-Diamonds}.

The player in the small blind bet again and Luske called. Lefkowitz folded and the player in the small blind opened {J-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds} for trip jacks. Luske mucked, but is still at 8,600 chips.

Quick Start for Lauria

Bob Lauria is off to a quick start at one of our stacked tables of late registers.

Lauria check-called every street on a {10-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{J-Diamonds} board and his opponent tabled {J-}{10-} on the river. Lauria tabled {K-Hearts}{Q-Hearts} for a winning straight, chipping up to 7,000.

Late Registration: A Cautionary Tale

If you ever need a reason not to late reg for a WSOP event, this is it. The $2k tables that filled after the break look just like the ones you'd see at a $10k. First we spotted Jan von Halle, Sabyl Landrum, Bob Lauria, Joe Chaplin, Rep Porter, Dewey Tomko, Matt Stout, and Eric Blair in the field. Fair enough. Then we moved down the line to the last three tables down the line. See for yourself.

Sometimes Fourth Pair is the Nuts

Dan Heimiller raised from the cutoff, and Justin Young three-bet on the button. Heimiller called, and they went heads up to a {j-Spades}{5-Hearts}{3-Spades} flop. Heimiller check-raised Young, who flatted. Then Dan bet out on the {6-Diamonds} turn, and Young flat called again. The {q-Clubs} on the turn got a check from Heimiller, and Young checked behind. Justin showed {a-Clubs}{5-Clubs} for fourth pair, and that was good enough to win the pot. Young climbed to 9,200 while Heimiller is down to half of his starting stack.
