Hellmuth Takes a Hit, Then Doubles Back

Stud

Phil Hellmuth{x-}{x-} / {2-Hearts}{2-Spades}{10-Spades}{k-Clubs} / {x-}
John Monnette{x-}{x-} / {5-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{6-Clubs} / {x-}

Hellmuth completed, Monnette raised, and Hellmuth called. Hellmuth bet out when he made a pair on fourth, but then check-called bets on fifth, sixth, and seventh.

"Jesus Christ," Hellmuth muttered when he called on sixth.

After Hellmuth called the final bet, Monnette tabled {10-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{4-Hearts} for a flush. Hellmuth was furious, laying into Monnette, who raked in the massive pot.

Stud 8

A few hands later, Hellmuth brought it in with the {2-Clubs}. Monnette completed with the {a-Spades}, and Hellmuth called. Monnette was dealt the {9-Spades} on fourth, and check-called a bet from Hellmuth, who was dealt the {4-Spades}. Both players were dealt red jacks on fifth, and Monnette led out. Hellmuth raised, moving all in for 200,000 exactly, and Monnette called.

Hellmuth({10-Spades}{2-Spades}) / {2-Clubs}{4-Spades}{j-Diamonds}
Monnette({3-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}) / {a-Spades}{9-Spades}{j-Hearts}

Monnette caught the {a-Hearts} on sixth, giving him a leading pair of aces, and Hellmuth did not improve with the {7-Diamonds}. Monnette quickly flipped over the {k-Spades} on seventh, and Hellmuth squeezed his down card.

"It's either the four or five of clubs," Hellmuth announced.

He turned over the {4-Clubs}, giving him two pair and the winning hand.

"I got it in with the best of it!" he shouted to the rail.

Hellmuth Hurting... Again

Stud 8

Phil Hellmuth: {x-}{x-} / {j-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}{q-Clubs}{10-Diamonds} / {x-}
John Monnette: {x-}{x-} / {8-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{5-Spades}{8-Spades} / {x-}

John Monnette was the bring-in with his eight showing, David Bakes Baker completed and Phil Hellmuth called. Monnette then raised and Baker folded, while Hellmuth called. On fourth street, the players committed a bet each, the same as they did on fifth. Sixth street would see Hellmuth look unhappy as he let his hand go when Monnette bet. With that hand, Hellmuth is down to just a few big bets.

Hold'em

When Phil Hellmuth held {9-Clubs}{9-Hearts} during a hand of hold'em, he couldn't get his chips in quick enough, trying his best to get them in preflop against John Monnette. He would have to wait until the flop though, seeing his tournament life on the line with {j-Hearts}{k-Spades}{k-Clubs} on the felt.

Hellmuth was up against {a-Hearts}{3-Clubs}, with that flop giving Monnette more outs to knock Hellmuth out. While the {q-Diamonds} on the turn wasn't the worst news for Hellmuth, it certainly wasn't the best, as Monnette could now catch any jack, ace or queen to win.

The river fell with a safe {8-Hearts} and Hellmuth celebrated in his typical fashion as he took the double-up.

Hellmuth's Rollercoaster Continues

Hold'em

Phil Hellmuth limped in from the small blind, and John Monnette checked his option. The dealer fanned {10-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}, and Hellmuth check-raised Monnette. Monnette called. Hellmuth checked dark before the {4-Clubs} turned, Monnette checked behind, and the {3-Diamonds} completed the board. Hellmuth led out, and Monnette instantly called.

"Sevens with a nine," Hellmuth announced.

Monnette silently tabled {j-Hearts}{7-Diamonds} for a better pair of sevens, which sent Hellmuth into a rage.

A few hands later, David Baker raised in the small blind, and Hellmuth defended his big. The flop was {a-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{8-Hearts}, and Baker led out. Hellmuth called. Both players knuckled after the {10-Spades} turned, and Baker quickly fired a bet when the {q-Diamonds} fell on the river. Hellmuth called instantly.

"Queen," Baker announced, flipping over {q-Clubs}{4-Spades}.

Hellmuth shot out of his chair in disbelief. He muttered a few unpleasant words under his breath, and showed that he had called Baker with {k-Spades}{4-Hearts} for just king-high.

"Three outs," Hellmuth muttered. "You play good kid."

Phil Hellmuth Eliminated in 4th Place ($134,056)

Phil Hellmuth - 4th Place
Phil Hellmuth - 4th Place

Phil Hellmuth has had a tough time since he got back from the dinner break and has now seen his tournament come to an end. It was during a hand of Omaha Eight-or-Better, that started when Hellmuth posted the big blind - leaving himself with just a small amount behind.

"Well, regardless of what happens, it's been a great final table," Hellmuth said to his three foes, shaking each of their hands.

"It's not over yet Phil, you've got a lot of life left in you," said Monnette in reaction to the hand shake. However, Monnette was wrong.

Monnette opened the hand with a riase from under the gun and Hellmuth made the call. On the {k-Clubs}{k-Spades}{2-Hearts} flop, Hellmuth checked and Monnette bet. Hellmuth then committed his last chips - an extra 15,000. Monnette called and the two players turned their hands over.

Monnette: {a-Hearts}{j-Spades}{j-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}
Hellmuth: {5-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{3-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}

The {9-Clubs} turn and the {8-Spades} turn were not what Hellmuth was looking for as he made his way home in 4th place. Another great effort from the 12-time World Series of Poker gold bracelet winner.

Baker Takes Monster off of Monnette

Stud

After a few small razz pots, John Monnette brought it in with the {6-Clubs}, and David "Bakes" Baker completed with the {j-Hearts}.

Baker{x-}{x-} / {j-Hearts}{6-Spades}{5-Diamonds}{8-Spades} / {x-}
Monnette{x-}{x-} / {6-Clubs}{10-Spades}{2-Spades}{4-Spades} / {x-}

Baker check-called a bet on fourth street, and on fifth street, he check-raised Monnette, who called. Baker led for the first time on sixth, and Monnette decided to raise. Baker tank-called, and both players checked on seventh.

"Jacks," Baker announced, tabling {a-Clubs}{k-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}.

"You didn't even have a pair???" Monnette shot at him, irritably.

"I had them," Baker responded, indicating that he started the hand with a split pair.

Monnette unhappily mucked his hand, while Baker raked in the monster pot to assume the chip lead.

Sokoloff Seesawing

Paul Sokoloff has played several hands of Stud games in the few orbits and has seen his stack rise and decrease many times. The latest hand saw Sokoloff take on John Monnette.

Monnette: {x-}{x-} / {9-Spades}{a-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{2-Spades}
Sokoloff: {x-}{x-} / {5-Clubs}{6-Spades}{k-Spades}{q-Spades} (FOLDED)

Both players checked on fourth street and Monnette bet on fifth. Sokoloff called the bet there, but then folded to a bet on sixth street.

Hold'em

John Monnette, who crippled Paul Sokoloff in a Stud 8 hand moments earlier, raised from the small blind. Sokoloff made it three bets, and Monnette called. The flop came down {5-Clubs}{4-Spades}{5-Hearts}, and Monnette led out. Sokoloff raised, Monnette instantly re-raised, and Sokoloff called all in.

Monnette: {7-Clubs}{6-Spades}
Sokoloff: {a-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}

The turn was the {7-Hearts}, giving Monnette a leading pair of sevens. The suicide king ({k-Hearts}) completed the board, eliminating Sokoloff in third place.
