Kelly Takes Some Chips from Hawkins

Level 9 : 300/600, 75 ante

We arrived at the table on the turn, with the board showing {7-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}{a-Spades}{k-Clubs}. Dan Kelly and Maurice Hawkins were involved in a hand, and both players checked. Hawkins bet 3,100 when the {j-Spades} fell on the river, and Kelly called. Kelly showed {a-Hearts}{q-Spades}, and Hawkins mucked his hand.

Kelly is up to 67,000, and Hawkins now sits with 51,000.

Ivey Lets One Go

Level 9 : 300/600, 75 ante

Phil Ivey raised to 1,200 from under the gun. The player in the cutoff raised to 3,600. Ivey called.

On the {3-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}{Q-Spades} flop, Ivey checked to the player who made it 6,500. Ivey let it go.

Even after losing that small pot, Ivey is still above the average ship stack at the moment.

Esfandiari Busts Polychronopoulos

Level 9 : 300/600, 75 ante
Antonio Esfandiari
Antonio Esfandiari

Athanasios Polychronopoulos, winner of Event #17 at this year's World Series of Poker, pushed all-in for his last 8,675 pre-flop, and action folded around to Antonio Esfandiari in the big blind. Esfandiari squeezed for dramatic effect, looking only at one card first, then holding his cards above the felt and slightly flashing a king on the bottom. He then looked at the other card, thought for a moment, and threw in chips for a call. Polychronopoulos turned over {a-Clubs}{8-Clubs} and was slightly ahead of Esfandiari's {k-Spades}{q-Clubs}. The board rolled out {6-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}, giving Esfandiari a king-high straight and eliminated Polychronopoulos from the tournament. After the hand, Esfandiari had 65,500 chips in front of him.

Level 8 : 250/500, 50 ante

Players have returned from their 20-minute break. There will be one more short color up break after this level.

Hawkins Drops Some

Level 8 : 250/500, 50 ante

Action folded to Yashar Darien who raised to 1,100 before the flop. He was called by the player in the small blind before Maurice Hawkins raised to 4,500 from the big blind. Darian called, but the player in the small blind folded.

On the {5-Spades}{q-Spades}{9-Clubs} flop, Hawkins continued with a bet of 4,400. Darian called.

The turn was the {Q-Hearts} and Hawkins check called a bet of 4,000 from Darian.

On the {K-Hearts} river, both players checked.

"If you checked then I win," Hawkins said showing his {A-Hearts}{K-Spades}. But he was wrong. Darian showed {A-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds} and scooped the pot with trip queens.

You don't want to have ace-jack this time, buddy"

Level 8 : 250/500, 50 ante
Phil Hellmuth
Phil Hellmuth

Jonathan Aguiar opened the action with a raise to 1,100 pre-flop. The button called, Phil Hellmuth called from the small blind and Hasan Habib called from big blind. The dealer spread a flop of {5-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}. Hellmuth checked, and Habib bet 2,100. Action folded around to Hellmuth who check-raised to 5,000. After thinking for a few moments, Habib mucked his cards and Helllmuth took the pot.

The 1989 Main Event champion then turned over {4-Clubs}{4-Spades} for a flopped set, and told Habib, "You don't want to have ace-jack this time, buddy."
