Arieh Pained by Fold Against Obst

Level 19

Pot-Limit Omaha

James Obst limped the small blind and Josh Arieh raised the pot to 90,000 out of the big blind for his opponent to call.

On the J54 flop, Obst bet the pot and that sent Arieh into a world of pain as he groaned and leaned to the side.

Arieh even studied his cards very high, almost pointing them to Daniel Alaei while murmuring that he had all the back doors. Talal Shakerchi warned him not to expose his cards any further and Arieh then tank-folded.

Ivey Holds Off Dehkharghani

Level 19

Omaha Hi-Lo

Ray Dehkharghani raised from under the gun and Phil Ivey was the lone caller from the big blind. The flop was 2AK.

Ivey check-called a bet from Dehkharghani and the turn was Q. Both players checked on the turn and then again on the Q river.

Ivey turned over AJ74 to take the pot with aces and queens and Dehkharghani took a second look before he tossed the losing hand in the muck.

Three-Bet Pot to Obst

Level 19

Pot-Limit Omaha

James Obst raised to 80,000 and then called a pot-sized three-bet to 255,000 by Daniel Alaei in the small blind. The flop of J109 was checked and Alaei also checked the 7 on the turn. Obst bet 250,000 and that won the pot.

One hand later, Josh Arieh raised the pot on the button into the big blind of Talal Shakerchi. The Brit folded and Arieh joked "I thought you were gonna do to me what you did to Nacho," referring to the hand that let the bubble burst on Day 3.

Ashton Rolls Up on Dehkharghani, Fills Up on Sixth Street

Level 19
Matthew Ashton
Matthew Ashton

Seven Card Stud

Matthew Ashton: 88/8AJJ/7
Ray Dehkharghani: XxXx/AQ76/Xx

Matthew Ashton joined the table after the elimination of Marco Johnson and was greeted with a friendly joke by Kristopher Tong.

"They got us a live one, boys," Tong said as the 2013 PPC champion sat down.

Dehkharghani completed and Ashton raised. Dehkharghani responded with a three-bet and Ashton called. Dehkharghani bet on fourth street and Ashton called, and the same action took place on fifth street.

After pairing his jack on sixth street, Ashton led out with a bet and Dehkharghani called. Ashton bet once more on seventh street and Dehkharghani went in the tank for several minutes as he went back and forth between shuffling chips and crossing his hands over his face.

Dehkharghani eventually called and saw the bad news as Ashton started the hand with rolled up eights and improved to a full house along the way.

Josh Arieh: XxXx / 6x7x6x9x / Xx
Daniel Alaei: XxXx / 2x4x9x10x / Xx

Josh Arieh had lost a portion on his stack already to see his stack plummet to a level similar to fellow short stack Daniel Alaei. The latter then completed and Arieh came along with a six. Alaei bet the superior board on every street for Arieh to call down and get shown Jx3xAx for a nine, which won the pot for Alaei.

Kristopher Tong: XxXx/88JQ/Xx
Brian Rast: XxXx/4510J folded on seventh street

Marco Johnson completed and Kristopher Tong raised before Brian Rast called. The bring-in ducked out of the way and Johnson called to make three-way action.

Both players called a bet from Tong on fourth, fifth, and sixth street. Tong led out on seventh and Rast folded before Johnson leaned forward to contemplate his last 15,000. After a few minutes of thought, Johnson decided to take his shot on the next hand.

The following hand had no luck for Johnson and he was out of the tournament in 11th place for $115,477.

Alaei Gets Shorter

Level 19

Omaha Hi-Lo

Talal Shakerchi got involved in most of the four-card action with some chops and earned one full pot to carve a portion out of the stack of Daniel Alaei.

Shakerchi three-bet out of the small blind and Alaei called on the button. On the 772 flop, Shakerchi bet for Alaei to call and another bet on the 3 turn forced out Alaei.

Both clashed again in the next hand to chop before Shakerchi then chopped with Matthew Ashton. He raised the K8210 turn to get called by Ashton and the latter check-called the 3 river. Shakerchi tabled his AA1010 for a set of tens while Ashson had A765 for the low.

"Bucket List Event": Moneymaker Makes WSOP $50k Poker Players Championship Debut

Level 19
Chris Moneymaker
Chris Moneymaker

Twenty years after his defining victory in the 2003 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event that ignited the Poker Boom, Chris Moneymaker came to Las Vegas looking to further his already cemented status as one of the most important figures in poker history.

Only 27 years old at the time, Moneymaker spun a $40 satellite victory into $2.5 million in perhaps the most memorable and consequential WSOP victory of all time. Now a household name in poker, Moneymaker has now put up a $50,000 buy-in — the biggest of his two-decade poker career — to play the prestigious WSOP Poker Players Championship for the first time at the 2023 WSOP.

PokerNews spoke with Moneymaker during Day 1 on June 18 as he battled against the likes of Daniel Negreanu, Josh Arieh and two-time defending champion Dan "Jungleman" Cates, all of whom were seated at the 2003 Main Event champion's table.
