Powell Bluffs Fitoussi

We arrived at the table to see the board reading {J-Clubs} {K-Hearts} {3-Spades} {5-Diamonds} {Q-Diamonds} and Bruno Fitoussi in the small blind position betting out 12,000 into the already enormous pot. Over to Brian Powell on the button -- who raised to cover Fitoussi.

There followed some minutes of alternating dwelling and gesticulating, before Fitoussi eventually folded. Powell showed him {9-Hearts} {3-Hearts}.

"Damn, Kentucky, you're really playing, boy!" said tablemate Tony Cousineau. "Well, I got to do it once," Powell drawled back.

He raked in the huge pot and asked the dejected Fitoussi, "Jack?" Worse -- Fitoussi told him he had {K-?} {Q-?}.

Powell - already chip leader before the hand, now massive chip leader on 170,000
Fitoussi - down to 22,000

Kabbaj Growing

One player who has flourished of late is bracelet winner John Kabbaj. His last hand saw him squeeze Scott Montgomery's open of 1,200 to 6,700 after another player had flatted in between. Both opponents conceded their hand and Kabbaj picked up the pot uncontested.

Counts from that table:

John Kabbaj -- 105,000
Markus Golser -- 42,000
Scott Montgomery -- 25,000
Brandon Cantu -- 30,000

Wicked Nguyen of the West

Notepad in hand, I watched inquisitively as Men Nguyen called a bet of 3,200 on a dangerous {9-Clubs}{K-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}{10-Diamonds} board. His opponent checked, albeit after a dwell, the {J-Clubs} river, at which point Nguyen announced a bet of 8,000. His opponent relinquished his hand.

"A-J?"

Nguyen released a devilish shriek of laughter. "It's OK, I'll let you watch it on TV to see what I got."

"I almost pushed the river,"

Nguyen shrieked again, like the Wicked Witch of the West. "If you push river, you probably got it."

Nguyen back up to 30,000.

Hoyt Uncorked

We arrived to see the board reading {7-?} {3-?} {6-?} {10-?} {7-?} and Hoyt Corkins turning over {7-Clubs} {8-Clubs} for trips, virtually all of his chips in the middle. His opponent however, who had not looked at all like he wanted to make the call, flipped {4-?} {5-?} for the flopped straight. The straight was good and Corkins was all in for the ante the next hand. He failed to make any kind of miraculous recovery, and busted out moments later.
