Courage Under Fire

Today has witnessed several outrageous bluffs from the likes of Brandu Cantu and Andy Black, but perhaps the latest is the most interesting.

Having raised it up preflop from early position, a young player in seat two received two callers in Ben Grundy and Chad Brown. On the {8-Clubs}{8-Spades}{J-Clubs} flop, the initial raiser continuation bet for 1,500, only for Grundy to minimum raise to 3,000. Brown cold-called behind, as did seat two.

After everyone dropped down a gear and checked the {6-Diamonds} turn, Brown decided to lead out on the {K-Hearts} river with a bet of 5,000. Seat 2, however, decided to make it 26,000 to play, urging Grundy to fold and putting the pressure back on Brown.

Although hesitant, Brown eventually folded, only to be shown {A-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}, much to the surprise of the rest of the table. "Did you have an eight?" "No, I didn't have an eight, but your hand was beat," answered Brown honestly.

Also on that table:

Erik Friberg -- 31,000
Todd Brunson -- 58,000
Ben Grundy -- 49,000

Chip Lead Changing Hands

Jonathan Aguiar is still on a very hefty 105,000, but he has been overtaken by Sami "LarsLuzak" Kelopuro on 109,000 and Jason "Poochie from the Simpsons" Mercier on 120,000. These two titans are sharing a table, and are probably upsetting everyone else sharing with them.

Lieu Takes a Hit

Liz Lieu faced a bet of 1,150 on a {J-Clubs}{9-Spades}{9-Diamonds} flop, and after much deliberation and fingering of chips, bumped it up to 3,600. Her opponent huffed, sat forward, then made the call.

Both players checked the {4-Clubs} turn, Lieu more cautiously than her opponent, before the initial bettor led for a rather curious 1,900 on the {3-Spades} river. But it was big enough, as Lieu made the fold. She's now down to 43,000, but still has her head above water.

Aguiar Grabs the Lead

It looks like he grabbed it with both hands and shook it until it just gave in -- he's up to 108,000.

"I hit a straight flush against Steven Begleiter," he explained, with more pride than sheepishness; the formerly chip-leading Begleiter is nowhere to be seen.

We collectively declare him chip leader.

That Cantu Hand

Brandon Cantu
Brandon Cantu
I joined the action on the turn of a {6-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{5-Spades} board, 17,100 in front of Markus Golser and 35,025 before Brandon Cantu. It could have been a simple check-raise, or maybe even bet, two-bet, three-bet, but either way, it was a massive pot.

After much dwelling, and with only 11,000 behind, Golser made the fold, allowing Cantu to proudly show {A-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}.

"Woooooh," said one player. "Sick," said another. "That's like that Ivey hand where it went air, air, air."

Cantu now has 65,000; Golser has a face like a bulldog chewing a wasp, although he did later tap the table gently in recognition of the bluff.
