Koon Leads Stacked Final Table in $25,000 High Roller

Jason Koon

The final table of the 2012 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure $25,000 High Roller has been set after just under 10 hours of play on Day 2. When the day began, 56 players remained. At the end of the day, the field was whittled all the way down just eight with Jason Koon topping the final bunch with 1.646 million in chips.

Koon is no stranger to big buy-in events, but he's never cashed in anything above a $10,000 buy-in (which is still pretty hefty, though). Since 2008, Koon has been grinding the tournament circuit, racking up $427,251 of prize money in the process. His largest live score came in October of 2010 when he placed fourth in the World Poker Tour Festa Al Lago at the Bellagio in Las Vegas for $225,680. Koon and the other seven players have locked up a minimum of $108,780 for making this final table, meaning he'll be adding plenty more to those lifetime tournament earnings.

Joining Koon at the final table will be a very elite group of players. The 2010 World Series of Poker Main Event champion Jonathan Duhamel, PokerStars Team Online's Randy Lew, fifth-place finisher from last year Govert Metaal, Isaac Haxton, Leonid Bilokur, Nicolas Fierro and Michael Telker will all be joining Koon at noon tomorrow to play things out for the $1,134,930 first-place prize.

While Nick Yunis was being eliminated, Michael Telker, Jason Koon, and Govert Metaal were building a big pot on the other table. Metaal started the action, raising to 25,000 from the cutoff seat. Telker three-bet to 68,000 on the button, Koon cold four-bet to 123,000 from the small blind, and the action was back on Metaal.

"How much is the minimum raise?" he asked the dealer.

The dealer examined Telker's three-bet and Koon's four-bet, and informed Metaal that the minimum raise would be to 178,000. Metaal decided to make it 190,000, Telker immediately folded, and Koon called.

The flop fell {2-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}, and both players checked. The {7-Hearts} turned, and Koon led for 142,000. Metaal sat quietly for around thirty seconds, then folded {a-Clubs}{k-Clubs} face up.

Koon showed the {9-Hearts}, mucked his hand, and scooped the last pot of the night to take the chip lead.

Nick Yunis Eliminated in 9th Place ($79,770)

Nick Yunis got the remainder of his stack in the middle preflop holding {5-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}. He was racing against Team PokerStars Pro Jonathan Duhamel's {a-Diamonds}{k-Spades}, and Duhamel spiked a pair on the {10-Clubs}{k-Hearts}{9-Diamonds} flop. Neither the turn ({q-Spades}), nor the river ({j-Clubs}) improved Yunis' hand (in fact, it gave Duhamel Broadway) and he was eliminated from the tournament in ninth place.

Terje Augdal Eliminated in 10th Place ($79,770)

After folding one hand, Terje Augdal was all in from under the gun for his last 26,000. Govert Metaal made the call on the button and then Michael Telker reraised to 95,000 from the small blind. In the big blind, Jason Koon reraised to 175,000. Metaal and Telker both folded. First, Koon was pushed the side pot and then the cards were revealed between him and Augdal.

Augdal showed the {9-Hearts}{5-Hearts} and was up against the {J-Diamonds}{J-Clubs} for Koon. The flop came down {A-Hearts}{Q-Clubs}{4-Clubs}, but things didn't get interesting until the {2-Hearts} landed on the turn and gave Augdal a good amount of hope. The river missed him with the {2-Diamonds}, though, and Augdal was forced to the rail in 10th place.

Action folded to Randy Lew in the small blind and he moved all in. Nick Yunis called all in for 153,000 from the big blind. Lew tabled the {Q-Clubs}{3-Clubs} and Yunis the {K-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}.

The board came {A-Spades}{J-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{10-Clubs}{2-Hearts} and Yunis doubled up.

Haxton Doubles and Cripples Augdal

After Jason Koon opened to 26,000 from the cutoff seat, Terje Augdal three-bet to 61,000 from the button. Isaac Haxton tanked in the small blind and then reraised all in for 389,000. Govert Metaal folded the big blind and Koon had a decision. He tanked for a couple minutes and folded. Augdal now went into the tank. He spent several minutes there before eventually making the call.

Augdal: {A-Spades}{J-Clubs}
Haxton: {A-Diamonds}{K-Hearts}

The flop, turn and river kept Haxton in front as the {7-Clubs}{5-Spades}{2-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{6-Hearts} fell. Haxton doubled to over 800,000 while Augdal was left with just 30,000 in chips.

Telker Doubles with Jacks

From under the gun, Jason Koon raised to 26,000. Terje Augdal reraised to 66,000 from the cutoff seat and then play folded to Michael Telker in the big blind. He reraised all in for 261,000. Koon took some time, but folded. Augdal quickly called.

Telker: {J-Clubs}{J-Diamonds}
Augdal: {A-Spades}{K-Hearts}

The board ran out {8-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{3-Spades}{4-Clubs} and Telker's jacks held up.
