€25,000 High Roller Championship

Day 1 Completed

Day 1 Concludes

Daniel Alaei
Daniel Alaei
The High Rollers event called its last five hands a few minutes ago and there was little drama during them. The Tony G table was still reeling from the last minute handover of chip leader status to Daniel Alaei, who looks to be just shy of 300,000. We'll have full counts up tomorrow as play restarts, which will be at noon.

Only thirty seven remain out of the very respectable seventy-nine who coughed up the €25,000 entry fee. With such a large buy-in, the prize pool will be as juicy as bigger tournaments. Join us tomorrow as the final table will be approached and attained. Big stacks like Elky, Florian Langmann, Juha Helppi and Ilari Sahamies won't give up without an entertaining fight!

Boeree-d 'Em and Weep

Liv Boeree: gone in 11th hour, literally
Liv Boeree: gone in 11th hour, literally
Liv Boeree, shorter and shorter during the last levels, finally made a stand when she picked up {10-Hearts} {10-Diamonds}. It was bad timing though, as the raiser who shoved over had {Q-Hearts} {Q-Clubs} and promptly sent Boeree to the rail.

She did, however, do something unique at the table while listening to her ipod - air guitar. Just subtly, like, "I reckon no one's watching, so I'm going to play air guitar." More original than chip riffling.

Alaei Caramba! Double Bustout

Timoshenko: gracious in defeat
Timoshenko: gracious in defeat
Daniel Alaei may well be close to pipping Florian Langmann from being the end-of-day leader. It started with a cutoff Yevgeniy Timoshenko raise, then reraised by Alaei. Sandor Demjan came along for the ride, but it was going to be bumpier than he thought. Timoshenko promptly moved all-in for 36,200 more. After a dwell, Alaei also moved in! Demjan, too, got the rest of his chips in the middle.

Timoshenko: {A-Hearts} {K-Spades}
Alaei: {J-Diamonds} {J-Clubs}
Demjan: {A-Clubs} {Q-Spades}

The board ran out {9-Spades} {10-Clubs} {5-Hearts} {5-Clubs} {4-Spades} to give a big pot to Alaei, whose stack has gone nowhere but up all day.

Eastgate Shown the Door

Eastgate - oh well, plenty more where that €25,000 came from
Eastgate - oh well, plenty more where that €25,000 came from
Oh dear. After all that doubling up, it just took one nasty cooler for Peter Eastgate to lose his newly acquired stack.

Devilfish raised to 4,000 and Michael Binger made it 14,000 to go from the cutoff. Eastgate flatted on the button, Devilfish decided against the call, and they went heads up to the flop.

Flop: {Q-Spades} {4-Spades} {9-Spades}

Binger checked and Eastgate shoved -- and a snap-call from Binger spelled the end for the WSOP champ.

Eastgate: {A-Hearts} {A-Diamonds}
Binger: {Q-Clubs} {Q-Hearts}

Turn: {5-Spades}
River: {K-Clubs}

Romanello Gets the Better of Lichtenberger

Youthful Welshman Roberto Romanello has taken a tasty pot out of the hands of even more youthful big stack Andrew Lichtenberger.

Lichtenberger raised from the cutoff and Romanello called from the button, as did both blinds. They saw a {Q-Hearts} {K-Diamonds} {3-Clubs} flop and Lichtenberger checked. Romanello bet 11,000 and the blinds got out of the way; back to Lichtenberger, and he called.

Both players checked the {J-Hearts} turn, and Lichtenberger checked the {2-Hearts} river as well, at which point Romanello bet 45,000. A puzzled look from Lichtenberger, closely followed by a fold, and Romanello is up to around 150,000.

Helppi Puts the Pressure On

Helppi: have you seen this boy?
Helppi: have you seen this boy?
With the pot already nicely juicy (over 30k) and the flop down: {4-Diamonds} {8-Diamonds} {9-Diamonds}, William Thorson bet out and picked up one caller. He then found Helppi calmly sliding a big stack of blue 5k chips over the line, enough to cover both of Helppi's shorter-stacked adversaries. It took some dwelling time, but both players decided to let that one go.

Helppi, by the way, was as impassive to be as possible while still breathing, waiting for their decisions. His reflective aviators on, he sat totally still and I half expected him to pull out a picture of John Connor.

Hero to Zero

In what has been a real rollercoaster for him, (and everyone playing with him) businessman and poker enthusiast (I only know what I read on Google) Sandor Demjan has pretty much been felted. At one point he was nearing 200k.

After doubling up short stacks several times, the final chunk came out of his stack and went to a back-from -the-dead Peter Eastgate, whose {A-Diamonds} {A-Spades} saw him double yet again through Demjan. Eastgate is now up to 90k!

Now Demjan will have to perform the same magic trick as the WSOP champ to have any hope of coming back tomorrow.
