An Aching Toth

The run-bad continues for new Team PokerStars Pro Richard Toth. It's getting hard to watch at this point. The Hungarian moved all in for 12,350 preflop after the aforementioned Fabio Scaglione open-raised to 2,025. When it came back to Scaglione, he thought it over carefully before splashing in the call to put Toth at risk. Cards up, gents:

Toth: {10-Diamonds} {10-Spades}
Scaglione: {8-Diamonds} {8-Spades}

You can probably figure out the rest of this story from the context. The flop was a very ugly {3-Clubs} {8-Hearts} {7-Diamonds}, giving Scaglioni the crushing set and leaving Toth in a bad way. The {J-Spades} on fourth street opened up a little crack in the door, but Toth was not a believer. He was already packed up and halfway to the door by the time the blank {2-Hearts} hit the river.

That's another EPT down in gut-wrenching fashion for Toth.

Scaglione Makes Leonzio Roar

Or make a noise like, "Pfffff," anyway.

A grinning Fabio Scaglione - whose name, to the childish and untutored English-speaking mind sounds like the best dessert ever - had got the last of his chips in with {9-Spades} {9-Diamonds} on the turn of a {2-Spades} {Q-Diamonds} {9-Hearts} {3-Clubs} by the time we arrived at the table. A disgusted Marco Leonzio was attempting to muck, but it was pointed out to him that there was still a card to come and he turned his {K-Clubs} {K-Diamonds} over.

River: {3-Hearts}

Nope.

Scaglione duly doubled to 53,000.

A Final Number

... well, sort of. It's unusual that we make it this far into the day without the staff giving us a total number of runners. A quick inquiry with the Tournament Director told us what we needed to know.

Today's field was either 655 or 656 players strong. There's a discrepancy with the paperwork that the staff is working to sort out right now, and that's the reason for the delay. Today's entries will put the total field size at 1,240 or 1,241. Either way, we've crushed the previous record for this event's size and easily surpassed the cap.

We'll have the official number, along with the breakdown of the prize pool as soon as it's available to us.

Break Time

If you are a poker player in San Remo and you would like to smoke and/or use the bathroom, now would be a good time.

Kyllonen Dead

Many thanks to our friends over at pokernews.nl for furnishing us with the details of former EPT Copenhagen winner Jens Kyllonen's exit. He flopped a set of deuces - but his opponent flopped a set of threes, and once quads had failed to appear, Kyllonen hit the rail.

Big Pot for Kleijnen

By the time we arrived at the table the flop read {4-Diamonds} {J-Spades} {5-Diamonds} and there was already a three-way all in.

Peter Jepsen: all in with {J-Diamonds} {9-Diamonds} for top pair and a flush draw
Fabrizio Dosi: all in with {Q-Spades} {5-Spades} for middle pair
Ton Kleijnen: covering them both with {4-Clubs} {4-Hearts} for a set

"Slow! Slow!" a grinning Jepsen urged the dealer as she went to deal the turn and river - although it was uncertain whether that was to prolong the excitement or give him time to pray.

Turn: {K-Clubs}

River: {Q-Clubs}

Jepsen and Dosi both busted, and Kleijnen collected their chips.

Steindl Bust

Team PokerStars Pro Johannes Steindl is the latest casualty of the sitting-down-and-playing-cards war out there. We just got there in time to see him walking away so we can only guess at what he had - but whatever it was it wasn't good enough to beat Stefano Brega's {A-?} {K-?} on a jack-high board.
