He May Have No Dress Sense, But....

Johnny Lodden is some poker player.

I didn't see the pre-flop action but Johnny was in second position and his opponent was in mid position.

The flop was {3-Clubs}{3-Spades}{10-Clubs} and Johnny check-raised a 5K bet from the villain to 10K, which was was met with another raise to a total of 25K. Not to be outdone, Johnny decided to move all in for over 50K and his opponent eventually folded.

Johnny turned over {A-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}.

Johnny Lodden wins a Big Hand

No idea who he was playing against, so let's call him Steve.

Steve raises to 2500 with {K-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}.

Lodden smooth-calls on the button with {A-Spades}{A-Hearts}.

Check-check on a flop of {K-Clubs}{K-Spades}{6-Clubs}.

Check by Steve, raise to 3500 by Lodden with the turn being a {6-Hearts}, call by Steve.

Steve checks his full house and is raised 12,000 by Lodden after the river brings {A-Clubs} --- Steve cleverly just calls with his second best full house; he thought he was splitting the pot.

Lodden is sitting on around $40,000.

A Couple of Bustouts

Former Irish international footballer Tony Cascarino (at right, with Steve Vladar) is out after nursing a short stack for most of the day. Tony is famous for qualfying for the Irish national team because of his grandmother's Irish ancestry, who it later turned out wasn't actually Irish. I've never played with Tony but I'd imagine he must bluff a lot!

Also gone is James Feeney, who went broke with {A-Clubs}{Q-Clubs} on a {10-Clubs}{J-Clubs}{2-Diamonds} flop. Who wouldn't?

Train Crash!!

Pablo Rua just eliminated two short stacks when he woke up with {K-Spades}{K-Hearts} after they both moved all-in in front of him, Gary Harrington with {8-Clubs}{8-Spades} and Torsten Iversen with {7-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}.

The flop {K-Clubs}{A-Clubs}{9-Clubs} gave Harrington some outs but the {J-Diamonds} and {10-Diamonds} on turn and river means Rua moves his stack up to 24,000.

Dilbahar Demirbag

Or just Dilba for short, is a Swedish-born singer-songwriter. She recently converted to poker and is still alive on a stack of around 14K.

Meanwhile a fight just broke out beside the press area, over a chap on the rail smoking a cigar. A player in the tournament whose wife was watching him play decided he was sick of the passive smoke. I know how he feels. I've been blown out of it by the Italian press all day. God bless Irish casinos.

Extra Level Added to Today

In order to whittle the field down to few enough players for Day 2, the directors have decided to add another level to today's play. So we have two more hours to go.

On the last level we lost the following players of note.

Bertrand 'ElkY' Grospellier
Per Ummer
Christian Grundtvig

The next level will be 600/1200 with a 100 ante, which will really put some players under pressure.

A Showdown, My Kingdom for a Showdown

We, the assembled press in our glitzy green room (a.k.a., the table in the foyer) have been wandering around aimlessly for the last half hour. The action has really slowed down as we reach the final blind level and clearly everybody wants to make it to Day 2.

All we have seen in the last half hour is raise-reraise-fold, and we've had to bite our tongues to keep from screaming "Just call him, he obviously has nothing."

Level: 9

Blinds: 400/800

Ante: 100

It Turns Out This is a Rebuy Tournament

Well, it looked that way, the overhead projector in the middle of the card room said 126 players remained --- five minutes later it said 132 players were still in the tournament. Very possibly an admin error.

Not much else going on at the moment; my highlight in the last hour was a, shall we say, 'merry' player at Table 7 who inexplicably got up and bought me a drink. He was sitting on a very short stack, so hats off to him for taking it so well.

Elsewhere Ram Vaswani and Roland De Wolfe have just finished a game of Chinese Poker. Some large sums were mentioned which I won't disclose here, but you could keep me in Häagen-Dazs for many years with the money they were talking.
