Day 1b Concludes; Ashton Griffin Leads the Way; Phelps In Contention

18-Time Olympic Gold Medalist Michael Phelps Alive and Thriving

The final Day 1 flight of the 2013 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure Main Event is officially in the books. The man sitting on all of the chips at the end of Day 1b was Ashton Griffin, who bagged up 253,700 in chips. Not too far behind him was Michael "The Grinder" Mizrachi (216,900).

While Day 1a had a relatively small turnout with 320 entrants, Day 1b more than doubled that total with 649 entrants. After 18 no shows, the grand total was 987 entries. Seemingly every table was stacked with the familiar faces of poker superstars, tournament grinders and celebrities alike.

Two of the more interesting players to show up to the felt today were actor Jason Alexander and 18-time Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps.

Alexander, who is most famous for his role of George Costanza on the long-running television show Seinfeld, had a relatively short day of play as he ultimately saw his exit from the tournament before the dinner break.

Phelps, on the other hand, had a spectacular showing here on Day 1b. At one point in the day, we happened to catch him when he bested Jake Bazeley in a battle of the blinds. Could the most decorated Olympian in history make a run at one of poker most illustrious titles? Only time will tell, but he stands a good chance as he will be bringing 92,000 chips into play on Day 2.

Joining Phelps on the felt for Day 2 will be a veritable cornucopia of poker's elite. Olivier Busquet (130,000), Steve O'Dwyer (125,700), Matt Waxman (106,200), Aaron Massey (86,900), the newest Team PokerStars Pro Jake Cody (84,400), Nacho Barbero (79,600), Greg Merson (63,200), Matt Salsberg (53,000) and Phil Hellmuth (24,800) are just a small sample size of those returning to chase the dream of becoming the 2013 PCA Main Event Champion.

Also returning tomorrow is none other than Phil Ivey himself. While Ivey seemed to crush in the early goings of the day, as play went on his stack gradually dwindled. At the height of his day, Ivey was able to send Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier packing.

During Level 7, Ivey opened to 1,300 before the flop. After two calls, Grospellier three-bet to 5,250 from the small blind. Ivey flat-called and the other players folded their cards. The dealer fanned the {8-Hearts}{k-Hearts}{9-Spades}, and Grospellier led out for 4,400. Ivey tossed out four blue T5,000 chips, putting Grosspellier all in, and he called immediately.

Ivey: {8-Spades}{8-Diamonds}
Grospellier: {a-Clubs}{k-Spades}

The turn and river came the {2-Clubs} and {10-Hearts}, respectively, and Grospellier's hopes of a deep run were dashed.

By the end of the day, though, Ivey managed to just about all of his stack. A significant portion of this loss occurred when Owen Crowe was able to double through Ivey and cripple him. From there it was a downward movement that left Ivey finishing with a mere 5,600 in chips. Still, anything can happen moving forward as long as a player has chips.

Joining the likes of Grospellier on the rail are several other notable players. The PCA came to a quick end for Vanessa Selbst, Jonathan Duhamel, Kevin MacPhee, Huck Seed, JC Alvarado, Marvin Rettenmaier, Jason Mercier, Henry Tran and Shane Schleger. Chris Moneymaker, who finished 11th in this event last year, was also unable to get anything going today. Furthermore, the chances of having a repeat champion were dashed when the 2012 PCA winner, John DiBella, fell at the hands of Fabian Quoss.

One final notable elimination occurred toward the end of the night when recent 2013 PCA $100,000 Super High Roller champion Scott Seiver was eliminated. Seiver raised holding {2-}{2-} and then called off his 20-big-blind stack when an opponent raised with the {A-Hearts}{K-Hearts}. The {10-Hearts}{8-}{8-Hearts} flop was dangerous to Seiver as it gave his opponent the nut-flush draw and counterfeit options to go with his overs. The {6-} fell on fourth street, and Seiver was still in the lead. Much to his chagrin, however, the {4-Hearts} hit the river, and Seiver was forced to make his way to the exit.

Approximately 375 players from Day 1b will join with the 160 or so from Day 1a for Day 2. As we inch closer and closer to crowning a champion, be sure to stay tuned to PokerNews for all of the latest updates from Paradise Island!

The $100K Super High Roller Champ Doesn't Find Main Event Success

Scott Seiver
Scott Seiver

Yesterday Scott Seiver took down the 2013 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure $100,000 Super High Roller for $2,003,480. Needless to say, we're sure he's not too upset with his recent elimination from the Main Event.

We didn't see the hand happen, but Jonathan Aguiar, who was seated to Seiver's right, was kind enough to fill us in. According to him, Seiver raised holding {2-}{2-} and then called off his 20-big-blind stack when an opponent raised with {A-Hearts}{K-Hearts}. The {10-Hearts}{8-}{8-Hearts} flop was dangerous to Seiver as it gave his opponent the nut-flush draw and counterfeit options to go with his overs. The {6-} turn was of no particular interest, but the {4-Hearts} river was as it ended up being the last card Seiver would see here on Day 1b.

"He's still never made Day 2 of the PCA Main Event," Aguiar added, much to the amusement of neighbor Andy Frankenberger.

Michael Phelps

The action folded to 22-time Olympic medalist Michael Phelps, who raised to 2,400 out of the small blind. Jake Bazeley called in the big blind, and the flop fell {2-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}{9-Hearts}. Phelps led out for 1,500, and Bazeley called.

The turn was the {5-Diamonds}, Phelps checked, and Bazeley fired 3,600. Phelps called.

The river was the {a-Diamonds}, and Phelps reached for chips, firing 7,500. Bazeley frowned, then folded his hand.

Ivey Flops a Set, Busts ElkY

Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier (Super High Roller) is eliminated
Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier (Super High Roller) is eliminated

Phil Ivey opened to 1,300 from under the gun, two players called in middle position, and Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier three-bet to 5,250 from the small blind. Ivey's neck snapped towards Grospellier when he tossed out the three-bet, his eyes fully focused on the Frenchman.

Ivey then turned his gaze to one of the other players in the hand, reached for chips, and made the call. The two other players folded.

The dealer fanned {8-Hearts}{k-Hearts}{9-Spades}, and Grospellier led out for 4,400. Ivey tossed out four blue T5,000 chips, putting Grosspellier all in, and he called immediately.

Ivey: {8-Spades}{8-Diamonds}
Grospellier: {a-Clubs}{k-Spades}

The turn and river came {2-Clubs}, {10-Hearts} respectively, and Grospellier was eliminated. Ivey is now up over 140,000 chips.

Hortin Hears A Set-Flopping 18-Time Gold Medalist

Michael Phelps
Michael Phelps

In one of the last hands before the level went up, Dylan Hortin opened for 700 under the gun and received a call from 18-time Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps in the hijack. The {2-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{4-Clubs} flop saw Hortin continue for 1,050, and then call when Phelps raised to 2,400.

Both players then checked the {J-Clubs} turn, and Hortin led out for 4,000 on the {A-Hearts} river. Phelps called and waited for Hortin to show {K-Spades}{K-Hearts} before tabling the winning {4-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}.

Hortin busted a few hands later.

Jason Mercier opened to 600 from under the gun, Ryan Higgins called in the small blind, and Yoni Uzan three-bet to 1,700 from the big blind. Mercier four-bet to 3,025, Higgins folded, and Uzan moved all in for 11,750. Mercier snap-called.

Mercier: {k-Clubs}{k-Spades}
Uzan: {q-Spades}{q-Clubs}

The flop fell {a-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}{a-Spades}, giving Uzan a full house and a stranglehold on the hand. The Israeli held as the turn and river came {6-Spades}, {9-Hearts} respectively, and he doubled.

Defending PCA Main Event Champion John Dibella Eliminated

John Dibella - Eliminated
John Dibella - Eliminated

On the last hand of Level 4, 2012 PCA Main Event Champion John Dibella was eliminated.

Fabian Quoss filled us is on the details. After an early position raise, Dibella called from the small blind. Quoss called from the big blind and the flop came down {J-}{5-}{2-} with two hearts. Dibella checked to Quoss who bet 1,000, resulting in a fold from the preflop raiser.

Dibella raised to 3,000, only to see Quoss re-raise for more than Dibella's remaining stack. After some time in the tank, Dibella called all in with {Q-Hearts}{9-Hearts} and looked to get there against Quoss' {5-Spades}{2-Spades}.

However, no help came for Dibella, ending his Main Event title defense.

Peter Jetten Wins First-Ever Major Open Face Chinese Poker Tournament

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante
Peter Jetten won the first-ever Open Face Chinese tournament at the 2013 PCA.
Peter Jetten won the first-ever Open Face Chinese tournament at the 2013 PCA.

It’s hard to recall a game that has grown as fast and been as popular as Open Face Chinese. The game garnered mainstream attention during the World Series of Poker Europe as players like Phil Hellmuth, Brandon Cantu, Jeff Lisandro, Joe Hachem and Jason Mercier spent their evenings playing long sessions of the game.

The player enthusiasm for the game inspired PokerStars to host the first-ever Open Face Chinese tournament a this year’s PCA, and while there were a few that’ll need to be ironed out moving forward, the event proved a tremendous success as 59 players accounted for 18 re-entries, creating a prize pool of $149,380.

Along with many of the aforementioned players, the tournament also attracted Chinese Poker aficionados Daniel Negreanu and Shaun Deeb. Unfortunately neither of those players, nor any of those listed about, had much success. Instead, the title went to well-known Canadian pro Peter Jetten, who has the distinction of being the first major live Open Face Chinese champion.

Welcome To Day 1b Of The 2013 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure Main Event!

Location shots from the 2013 PCA!
Location shots from the 2013 PCA!

The 2012 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure Main Event continues today with Day 1b action from the Atlantis Resort on Paradise Island in the Bahamas. Yesterday Day 1a of this tournament drew 320 players, which represented a 23.445% decrease from 2012’s Day 1a. Nevertheless, the field here today is expected to be huge!

We expect to see the likes of Daniel Negreanu, Jason Mercier, Phil Hellmuth, Vanessa Selbst, Victor Ramdin, Brandon Cantu and Shaun Deeb, just to name a few. We’ll also no doubt see the finalist from yesterday’s $100,000 Super High Roller final table, which included Nick Schulman, David “Doc” Sands, and eventual winner Scott Seiver.

Another man who will be playing is the defending champion, John DiBella. The amateur won this event last year after overcoming a final table that included Xuan Liu, Faraz Jaka, and Kyle Julius to win $1,775,000. What’s more, Dibella won the 2013 PCA Event #3 No-Limit Hold’em Turbo just a few days ago for $69,780. He’s the defending champion and is full of confidence and momentum—a dangerous competition.

All of today’s participants will be chasing Maxim Lobzhanidze, who emerged as the Day 1a chip leader of the advancing 162 players—he bagged up 248,900 in chips. Following closely on his heels were Gilbert Diaz (215,900) and Darren Elias (191,000). With that said, a bigger field means more chips and play and oftentimes results in the big stack emerging from Day 1b. We’ll just have to wait and see if that proves to be true today.

Day 1b will kick off at the Atlantis Resort on Paradise Island at 12:00 EST, so stay tuned to PokerNews throughout the rest of the day as we provide you with the latest coverage from the tournament floor!
