Michael Tran's Time Is Up

Michael Tran's PokerNews Cup is done
Michael Tran's PokerNews Cup is done
Michael Tran has become the latest player eliminated after running {A-?}{k-?} into an opponent's {K-?}{k-?}.

Preflop, the opponent opened from under the gun to 625 and Tran flat called. They took a {7-?}{8-?}{3-?} flop and the opponent fired off 1,150. Tran called again.

A {k-?} hit the turn and the opponent checked. Tran took the opportunity to fire out 2,000 only for the opponent to move back over the top all in covering Tran.

Tran went into the tank considering his options before making the call. He would be drawing dead to the river, and so packed up his stuff and hit the road.

A Bouya-Flop But River Disaster

Steve Bouya opened with a raise to 600 before Morry Edelstein popped it up to 2,200. Aytunc Tezay cold-called the raise from the blinds and Bouya came along as well to see a flop of {6-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}.

Tezay checked and Bouya led out for 2,600. Edelstein then announced he was all in for 6,500 in total as Tezay tanked before releasing (what he later claimed was pocket jacks). Bouya instantly called and the cards were tabled.

Edelstein: {A-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}
Bouya: {3-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}

Edelstein had the nut flush draw but he'd need to connect as Bouya showed a flopped straight and straight-flush draw!

The turn was the {2-Spades} but the river found another diamond as the {7-Diamonds} landed to give both players a flush but Edelstein's ace-high flush took it down. He doubles to 26,000 as Bouya falls to 14,000.

David Gorr Benefits From The Big Action

Matt Hawker takes a big hit
Matt Hawker takes a big hit
Preflop, Matt Hawker opened to 525 with David Gorr flat calling from middle position. Stewart Scott raised to 2,025 from late position and the player in the big blind called.

Hawker then popped it up to to 6,525 and Gorr responded by pushing all for 28,000. Scott and the big blind got out the way and the decision was on Hawker.

After tanking for a bit, he made the call with {A-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}. He wasn't happy to see Gorr's {k-Diamonds}{k-Spades}.

The board ran out {10-Clubs}{2-Spades}{6-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{Q-Clubs}. Hawker drops to 12,000 and Gorr moves up to about 65,000.

Chris Christoff Eliminated

On a flop of {A-?}{9-?}{9-?} Chris Christoff bet out and his opponent raised. Christoff made the call and took the turn {8-?}. Both players checked and went to the river {10-?}

On the river the opponent checked once again to Christoff who moved all in. The opponent snap called tabling {A-?}{a-?} for a flopped full house. Christoff looked dejected as he rolled over his own {7-?}{J-?} for a rivered straight.

Duckworth Takes A Hit

Preflop, Tim Duckworth opened to 450 from under the gun and got one call before another opponent made it 1,500 to go. Duckworth and the other player both called, along with a third opponent, going to the {6-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{8-Spades} flop.

All three players checked the flop and on the {3-Hearts} turn one of the players came out firing 10,000. The other players folded and Duckworth set the aggressor all in for 15,500 after sitting in the tank for around three minutes. The opponent called.

Duckworth: {j-?}{j-?}
Opponent: {5-?}{5-?}

Duckworth looked set to add to his chip lead but the {7-Spades} spiked the river to make his opponent a straight. Duckworth is down to 32,000.

The Numbers

The official number for today's field is 210, which includes 53 players who repechaged into today after already busting out yesterday. This puts the total number of entrants for the 2009 PokerNews Cup Main Event at 381.

While last year's field generated 410 entrants, the final figure of 381 is a strong one considering current tough economic times, the general slide in total numbers across the poker industry and the abundance of poker events available to players in 2009.

The top 32 players will finish in the money with a minimum cash worth $4,000. Reach the final table of nine and you'll pocket $12,000, while the champion will claim the trophy and a whopping $250,000.

Miles From Where He Wants To Be

David Miles is gone after losing a couple of big hands.

In the first Miles led 1,800 on a flop of {4-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{5-Hearts} flop and a player in late position came along.

The turn {6-Spades} had Miles as the aggressor again betting 2,600 which the opponent flat called. The river {3-Diamonds} saw Miles check to his opponent who took the lead betting 3,000. Miles check-raised to 8,250 and his opponent instantly moved all in.

Miles tanked for a little bit, possibly for show, before laying his hand down and dropping to 7,275 in chips.

In his elimination hand three players took a {2-Spades}{9-Spades}{9-Diamonds} flop for 1,900 chips each. Guillaume Sosnouski in middle position bet out 2,000 and Miles moved all in. Both of the opponents called locking the main pot.

On the turn {k-Hearts} Sosnouski moved all in and the small blind folded.

Sosnouski {A-Diamonds}{a-Clubs}
Miles {10-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}

The river {5-Hearts} was not enough to get Miles home.

Sosnouski drags a huge pot, while Miles hits the rail.

"You Call You Win"

Karib Karib can run the odd bluff
Karib Karib can run the odd bluff
In the hand directly following Jamie Glazier's double up against Sherif Derias, Glazier tangled with Karib Karib.

On a flop of {6-Clubs}{3-Spades}{2-Diamonds} Glazier flat-called a 1,000 chip bet from Karib. The turn {3-Clubs} saw Karib fire 2,000 chips and Glazier went into the tank before opting to call.

On the river {8-Diamonds} Karib fired out 6,000 and Glazier tanked it again. This time he made a pained fold.

Karib rolled over {9-Clubs}{10-Diamonds} quick as a whip, for a big bluff.

"You call you win," taunted Karib as he dragged the pot.
