Sam Greenwood Snatches Chip Lead Right at End of Day 1

Level 9 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Sam Greenwood
Sam Greenwood

The first no-limit hold'em event at 2018 Triton Super High Roller Series Jeju attracted some of the players who skipped the Triton Hold'em (Short Deck) events and took to the felt for the first time here in South Korea. The field looked more as a traditional portfolio of the high stakes tournament get-together with regulars from Europe and North America hopping into the HK$500k 6-Max.

Sam Greenwood was one such player, joining the six-handed battles along with his brother Luc. While the Greenwood brothers play high buy-in events all around the world, they haven't been too active in recent months. The taxes for Canadians basically shut the door for them to play in the United States where the vast majority of the poker action takes place during summer time.

But they arrived in Jeju and even spent a significant part of the day sitting next to each other. As is usual for the Greenwoods, they aren't the type of players who would first scope the field before jumping in. They were among the first three players to register. Then they waited until the tournament got enough entrants to kick off.

"The field is about what I expected. I know that recreational players in Asia show up late. They have the registration open for two levels more. I think it's a slightly different scene here," Sam Greenwood said.

Eventually, the field grew to 25 entries through the first nine levels but as Greenwood noted, it's likely that the total number will increase tomorrow with the registration running until the start of level 12. Unlimited re-entries are allowed through the registration period but that shouldn't be something Sam Greenwood would need to worry about.

He finished the day with the biggest stack, claiming the pole position on the very last hand of the night. Greenwood found pocket aces on the button and three-bet over Elton Tsang's open from the cutoff. He ended up in a dream spot as Tsang fired back with a massive 68-blind four-bet shove with ace-five.

That particular situation didn't require the calibre of skills Greenwood possesses, but it was the hand that allowed him to stack 191,700 ahead of Day 2. Widely regarded as one of the best tournament players in the world, Greenwood is now surely the hottest favorite to take down the title.

It's still a long way to go, though, and the 14-strong list of survivors includes a truly outstanding lineup. The top five features the likes of David Peters (145,500), Stephen Chidwick (111,700), Mikita Badziakouski (110,500) and Steve O'Dwyer (100,900). All of these players have been the driving forces of the high rollers around the globe in the past few years.

They will be accompanied by all-time legends Patrik Antonius, Phil Ivey and John Juanda so make sure to tune back to PokerNews live coverage on Friday, July 27 at 2 p.m. local time as the star-studded battles continue at Triton Jeju.

Greenwood Wins a Monster Pot With Aces on the Last Hand

Level 9 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Sam Greenwood

On the last hand of the day, Elton Tsang opened the cutoff to 3,100 with {A-Diamonds}{5-Hearts} but his neighbor Sam Greenwood looked down at {A-Spades}{A-Hearts}. Greenwood three-bet to 9,000 and David Peters peeled {J-Clubs}{10-Clubs} in the small blind. He decided to fold but JC Alvarado found king-queen in the big blind but he also avoided the temptation to cold four-bet and let his hand go.

Tsang, however, stuffed in all his 81,100 and Greenwood had a slam dunk call to make.

"Rebuy!" Tsang said when he saw Greenwood show the bullets.

The board of {8-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}{6-Diamonds} propelled Greenwood to a massive chip lead as he finished with 192,000 in chips. Tsang will most likely rejoin the field tomorrow.

Schulman Burns Four Time Banks Before Doubling Chidwick

Level 8 : 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Stephen Chidwick
Stephen Chidwick

With the action picked up on the {10-Hearts}{3-Clubs}{K-Clubs}, Nick Schulman checked in the big blind and Stephen Chidwick bet 2,000. Schulman called and the {A-Spades} arrived on the turn. Schulman checked again and Chidwick sized his second barrel at 8,000. Schulman tossed in calling chips.

The river was the {2-Spades} and Schulman checked for the final time. Chidwick grabbed all his chips and moved all in for 29,000. Schulman looked at his cards several times, tanking. He burned four timebanks before making the call.

Chidwick showed {A-Hearts}{Q-Clubs} for the top pair with top kicker and Schulman mucked his hand, leaving Chidwick with a big double.

Ivan Leow just conquered the HK$500,00 Triton Hold'em (Short Deck) Event for HK$8,470,000 and he's not quite done playing poker for the day. He's decided to hop into the six-max event as well and he just took his seat in the field. He'll definitely be a player to keep an eye on especially after such a good start to the week with two final tables and a win in the Triton hold'em short deck events.

Alvarado Gets Back to Even

Level 5 : 200/500, 500 ante
JC Alvarado
JC Alvarado

There was roughly 12,000 already in the pot on a flop of {9-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{5-Clubs} between Richard Yong and JC Alvarado. Yong was first to act and he put out a bet of 5,000. Alvarado was on the button and he decided to raise, making it 12,000. Yong then moved all in rather quickly for a bit over 40,000 and Alvarado called.

JC Alvarado: {9-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}
Richard Yong: {A-Clubs}{K-Hearts}

Yong had a flush draw and could catch up with a club but the turn was the {10-Hearts} and the river was the {2-Spades}. Stacks were counted out and Yong was a bit shorter than Alvarado sending him to the rail.

"Nines flop sets," Alvarado said after the hand. "That's the golden rule."

"So you're back to even now?" Luc Greenwood said, laughing.

"Back to even," Alvarado responded.

Peters Stacks Gruissem To Slim the Field

Level 3 : 100/300, 300 ante
Philipp Gruissem
Philipp Gruissem

Philipp Gruissem was seen sitting at the table without any chips in front of him and he gave up his time bank chips to the dealer as well. David Peters was across the table taking in a massive pot and he was kind enough to relay the information of the hand.

Peters said that he opened on the button with a raise and Gruissem three-bet from the small blind. Peters called.

The flop was {Q-}{9-}{7-} and Gruissem led out for 4,000. Peters called.

The turn was an {8-} and Gruissem led out again, putting forward a bet of 8,500 and Peters called again.

On the {4-} river, Gruissem checked. Peters moved all in with the covering stack for about 30,000 effective. Gruissem tanked then called holding {A-}{Q-} but Peters had him beat with {Q-Hearts}{8-Hearts} for two pair. That allowed him to take down the pot and sent Gruissem to the rail as the first player eliminated.

It's Finally Time for Some No-Limit Hold'em Action in Jeju

Richard Yong won the 6-max event at the last Triton stop.
Richard Yong won the 6-max event at the last Triton stop.

While the first couple events of this series have been no-limit hold'em short deck ante-only action, it's finally time to kick off some regular no-limit hold'em action here in Jeju at the Triton Super High Roller Series. At the last series in Montenegro, there was a HK$250,000 6-max event, but this event will be a bit larger at a HK$500,000 price point, or roughly USD $65,000.

The event in Montenegro was won be Richard Yong, one of the tournament's founders, and he bested a field of 35 players to take down the first place prize of HK$3,046,000 or roughly USD $388,030. This event will likely see a much larger prizepool as well with the buy-in being doubled.

Several faces have been seen wandering around the Triton tournament area but haven't joined the tournament just yet. We're likely to see some of the familiar faces so far such as Ben Lamb, Stephen Chidwick, Phil Ivey, Nick Schulman, but also some new faces as well such as Sergio Aido, Steve O'Dwyer, and Fedor Holz, who announced he would be at this event earlier but hasn't made an appearance yet.

This event features 40-minute levels with a starting stack of 50,000. Blinds will begin at 100/200. When antes are introduced in level two, they will be posted by the big blind. Registration will be open until the 12th level and players will have a chance for multiple entries before the registration is closed. Breaks will be every three levels and will be ten minutes each except for a 15-minute break after level 6. Action is set to begin at 4 p.m. local time and the event will be live streamed with a 30-minute delay once the HK$500,000 Short Deck Ante-Only tournament comes to a close. PokerNews will provide live coverage from the event from start to finish so make sure to tune in.
