Welcome back to our coverage of the World Series of Poker Circuit Main Event here at the River Rock Casino in Vancouver, BC. Yesterday saw the first flight of players take to the tables to battle for a spot among those to progress onto Day 2. A total of 294 entrants showed up for Day 1a and by the end of the day only 59 remained. Leading the way was Norman Overdijk with a stack of 242,000. John Cracic was close behind on his heels with 231,000 and Sean Hwang rounded out the top three with 207,000.

As this is a re-entry event, players who were eliminated from play yesterday have the option to buy back in today and give it another go. Of course, if this does not work out for them, they have one last shot to progress onto Day 2 by playing the Day 1c flight tomorrow.

Yesterday's play saw a solid amount of notable faces take to the felt only to have their hopes dashed by the end of the day. Huy Nguyen, Scott Clements, Matt Affleck, Doug Lee, Kevin MacPhee, Adam Levy, and Amit Makhija are some of the folks who were eliminated in the first flight. We expect to see most of, if not all of those names back at the tables today.

Players that register for today's flight will play 15 40-minute levels accompanied by a 45-minute dinner break before bagging and tagging for the end of the night. Be sure to stay tuned to PokerNews as we bring you the latest bad beats, big hands, and bust outs!

Smith Cuts Koon In Half

We saw Jason Koon enter the tournament area and take his seat at the same table as World Series of Poker bracelet winner Gavin Smith. On Koon's first hand at the table, he became entangled with Smith for a massive pot.

The board read {10-Spades}{k-Spades}{2-Clubs}{4-Spades}{4-Hearts} and Koon checked. Smith moved out a massive bet of 5,900 and Koon went into the tank. There was already a substantial amount of chips in the pot already and finally Koon decided to make the call.

Smith rolled over {9-Spades}{6-Spades} for a flush and Koon threw away his cards. Smith's scooping up of this massive pot brings him to about 31,000 while Koon is forced with an immediate uphill battle to start the day.

Sands Missteps Early

Action folded around to the cutoff who moved out a raise to 375. David "Doc" Sands three-bet from the button to 1,150 and it folded back to the original raiser. He four-bet the action to 2,150 and Sands flat called.

The flop brought {10-Diamonds}{3-Spades}{4-Diamonds} and Sands' opponent pushed out a c-bet of 2,575. Sands called and the {A-Spades} rolled off on fourth street. The cutoff checked and Sands quickly announced a check behind, prompting the dealer to reveal the {7-Hearts} on the river.

The cutoff moved out one more bet, this time making it 6,350. Sands then went into the tank for roughly two minutes while pondering his action.

"Sorry, guys," Sands said to the table while thinking about calling.

Eventually Sands dropped in a call and his opponent showed {A-Hearts}{k-Hearts} for top pair and top kicker. Sands mucked his hand and the pot was pushed the way of his opponent.
