3-Across: Five Letter Word for "Eliminated"

Eli Elezra
Eli Elezra
Eli Elezra was all in for before the draw for 10,300 and called by one of the chip leaders, Vince Musso. Musso drew one and made (J)-9-3-6-2. Elezra drew one and opened 8-4-3-2. He had half of the deck to catch to stay alive in the tournament -- any five (4), any six (3), any seven (4), any nine (3), any ten (4) or any jack (3).

Elezra took his time squeezing the card and commented that it was "three across" -- meaning three pips down the side of the card. That meant the card was a six, seven or eight, giving Elezra a 70% chance of it being a good card. Wouldn't you know it was an eight, pairing Elezra and knocking him out.

A few hands later Musso also knocked out Farzad Bonyadi to climb to 225,000 in chips.

Shawn Sheikhan Eliminated

Shawn Sheikhan moved all in for 20,000 before the draw and John Hanson made the call. Sheikhan stood pat with J-9-8-5-2 while Hanson showed 8-6-4-2 and drew one.

Hanson turned up a jack to make a J-8 low, sending Sheikhan to the rail.

On Your Scooter!

Andy Black just exited the Amazon Room, taking his Razr scooter with him. Black raised all in pre-draw to 15,000 after Hertzel Zalewski opened with a raise to 4,400. Justin Smith was behind Black and put in a third raise to 41,200, folding Zalewski.

On the draw both players stood pat. Black opened 8-7; Smith showed 8-6-5-3-2 to collect the pot, move to 130,000 in chips, and knock Black out.

Tran Gets a Chip Infusion

Justin "BoostedJ" Smith opened for 3,800 and Kenny Tran made the call. Smith stood pat while Tran drew one.

Tran moved all in for his remaining 7,400 after the draw and Smith gave up his hand. He's now up to 18,000.

Gus Gonzo

Well, that's it for Gus Hansen. He moved all in for 14,000 over the top of an open-raise to 3,000 by chip leader Roland de Wolfe. Hansen drew one; de Wolfe stood pat with 9-7-6-4-3. Hansen couldn't beat that hand. He's now out.

Appleman Climbing

We wanted to point out that, for the second day in a row, Mickey Appleman is NOT wearing his trademark Horseshoe jacket. That change seems to be working for him; he's up to 92,000 after two recent hands.

First, Appleman called a raise to 3,200 made by Dan Harmetz and drew one. Harmetz was pat. After the draw Appleman bet 6,500 and was called. He turned over Number One, 7-5-4-3-2.

"I'm glad I didn't raise," said Harmetz. "I had a 9-6."

A few hands later Appleman knocked out Mike Wattel by standing pat with 10-7-6-3-2. Wattel was drawing at a 9 but paired.

Freddy Deeb Eliminated

Freddy Deeb moved all in for his remaining 12,200 from early position and David Benyamine made the call from the big blind. Each player drew one card.

Benyamine made 8-7-5-3-2, besting Deeb's T-9-6-5-3 and he hit the rail.

Recent Eliminations

Jacobo Fernandez is out. He was all in against Jean-Robert Bellande, who stood pat on the draw with 8-7-6-4-3. Fernandez drew one to try to make a nine, then saw the bad news that he was drawing dead.

Amnon Filippi ran into a similar problem. He was all in for 15,000 and called by Archie Karas. Filippi drew two; Karas was pat with J-T-6-4-3. Filippi quickly mucked after squeezing a card.

Stanislav Alekhin is also out.

Lederer Eliminated

The PokerNews guys were circling around Howard Lederer like a vulture circling a dying animal. As much as Lederer may have wanted them to go away, it wasn't going to happen.

Lederer has been knocked out of his favorite tournament. He moved all in for 24,400 from the small blind after Jean-Robert Bellande opened for 3,200 and was called by Nick Schulman. Bellande folded to the reraise but Schulman called.

On the draw, Lederer was pat with 10-9-7-6-4. Schulman drew one and opened 8-6-3-2. He filled his draw, catching a 5 to send Lederer to the rail.
