Event 46: $2,500 No-Limit Hold'em

Day 1 Started

Welcome to Event #46: $2,500 No-Limit Hold'em

Mikhail Lakhitov Will Not Be Defending His Title Today
Mikhail Lakhitov Will Not Be Defending His Title Today

Another day in the dry Vegas heat or another day in the icy cold blast of the Rio? Last year, 1,734 players chose the Rio, and this 3-day event in particular. It was won by the Russian Mikhail Lakhitov who pocketed $749,610 and a World Series of Poker (WSOP) gold bracelet. We are almost certain to have a new champion this year as Lakhitov finished in the top ten of the chip counts in Event #44: $1,000 No-Limit Hold'em yesterday. We doubt he will blow his stack within the first 4-levels of today's event so a new champion will be crowned and that journey starts today at 12:00 PM.

The main focus of attention will be the Brasilia Room, but we expect the large field to spill over into both the Amazon and Pavilion as well. If we exceed one thousand-five hundred players then we will play eleven levels of sixty minutes, if we fall below that expected target then we will play ten-levels of poker. There will be a twenty minute break after every 2-levels and a ninety-minute dinner break at the end of level 6. As previously stated registration remains open until the end of level-4.

With a lot of the world's top talent already involved in Event #45: $50,000 Poker Players Championship, then there could be a lot of value in this event. Either way, PokerNews will be bringing you the very best action only they can.

Brasilia Room Gold Section Walkabout

Here is our bright and early report from the Gold Section of the Brasilia Room.

We have last years World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event runner-up Martin Staszko in the field. Staszko can fund the $2,500 buy-in because he won $5,433,086 for that second-placed spot. English actor and great poker player within his own right, Michael Greco, is in the house. Greco is currently sharing table space with one of the up and coming youngsters Pratyush Buddiga.

World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelet winner James Dempsey has just arrived with the remnants of last nights session coating his little purse (yes he has a purse). So how is Dempsey feeling?

"Absolutely under it mate," said Dempsey.

David 'Doc' Sands is also in the field and here he is getting involved in a heavy pot as early as Level 1.

Sands raised to 125 in early position, Ilkin Amirov called on the button before Yordan Jeliazkov also called in the small blind. Sands was next and he raised the stakes making it 1,150 to play. Amirov knew it was time to get out of Dodge, but Jeliazkov made another raise, this time for 2,600. Sands took a swig from his giant mug of coffee and then made the call. The flop was {J-Clubs} {8-Diamonds} {6-Spades} and a 3,525 Jeliazkov bet won the pot.

Right Out the Gates

The board read {5-Clubs}{2-Spades}{k-Clubs}{10-Diamonds} and Garry Gates was first to act and he opted to check. A player in middle position was up next and he bet out 575. A third player then raised and bumped it to 1,275. No one else was in the hand so we got to see Gates ponder his decision. After a few seconds he made the call. The middle position player did the same and all players were awarded a river.

After the {q-Diamonds} appeared on the river Gates checked, and the middle position player did the same. The third player in later position bet out an even 1,500. Gates made the call and the middle position player threw away his {q-Clubs}{4-Clubs} face up with a loud groan.

The late position player announced "I have ace king" while simultaneously flipping over {A-}{k-}. Gates calmly flipped over {10-Spades}{10-Clubs} for a set of tens and the winning hand. After the hand Gates now sits with around 14,000.

Internet Wizards Cast a Spell on the Silver Section

It seems as though the Internet whizz kids have all decided to ply their trade in the Silver Section of the Brasilia Room today. Michael 'muchenHB' Telker, Chris 'NigDawG' Brammer, Kyle 'First-Eagle' Weir and the highly thought out name of Jack 'jackellwood' Ellwood just a few of the names of youngsters who have bled the Internet banks dry.

So those are the wizards, but we also have a magician. Antonio Esfandiari has had a great World Series with 5 cashes which includes a 3rd place finish in Event #36: $3,000 No-Limit Hold'em Shootout and he is doing some wheeler dealing on his phone in the Silver Section.

Here are two hands that we picked up during our little trip and they involve one of those Internet wizards Chris Brammer and Hirel 'Sunny' Patel.

There was an early position limper before Brammer raised to 225 in the cutoff. Seth Fischer called on the button and the original limper made it a threesome. The flop was {A-Clubs} {8-Hearts} {8-Diamonds} and it was left to Brammer to c-bet for 350 and only Fischer called. The turn {7-Hearts} was checked through before a 500 bet by Fischer picked up the pot on the {8-Clubs} turn.

Nicolas Yunis raised to 200 in early position, Ivan Mamuzic three-bet to 425 in mid-position, Hiren Patel four-bet to 750 from the hijack, Mamuzic five-bet to 1,825 and Patel folded.

Pavilion Players

Erika Moutinho
Erika Moutinho

With tables now filled almost all players are playing are nine-handed and the rattling of chips is the only noise that can be truly deciphered. Play for Event 46 has been extended to the Pavilion room and after a recent walk-through here is what we have noticed.

The Pavilion room consists of plenty of players, a few you might recognize are Chino Rheem, Humberto Brenes, Jeff Madsen, Brent Hanks, and Jason Lester.

Lester boasts over $2,253,059 in live casino winnings and just made his first 2012 World Series of Poker cash a few days ago in Event 38: $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em. Unfortionately a 19th place finished prevented him from WSOP gold. A good run today though could put himself in position to make another deep run.

Another player in the field is Jennifer Tilly. The Academy Award nominee is currently sharing elbow space and a few laughs with Matt Stout. Jeff Madsen and Tim West both are at the same table, as are Andre Akkari and Erika Moutinho.

Moutinho managed to be getting involved in a growing pot as we walked by, and this is what we saw. The board read {2-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{6-Diamonds} and a player in late position fired out 400 after a handful of players in front of him knuckled the felt. Moutinho in the cut-off made the call and the rest of the table folded.

The {9-Hearts} on the turn prompted a check from the late position player and a bet of 650 from Moutinho. A call was made and both players were witness to the {9-Diamonds} on the river. Another check from Moutinho's opponent allowed for a bet of 1,100 to be placed by Moutinho. The late position player min-raised and Moutinho completed the call.

Cards were tabled and the late position player flipped over {K-}{k-}, and Moutinho countered with {3-Hearts}{3-Spades} for a full house threes over nines. With that hand Moutinho surpasses the 10,000 mark and sits with around 11,000.
