Day 4 Ends With Volpe On Top; Many Notables Still in Contention

Level 19 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante
Paul Volpe
Paul Volpe

After another four levels of hard-fought No-Limit Hold’em, Day 4 of what is arguably poker’s most prestigious tournament — the Main Event — is history. When all was said and done, Paul Volpe would stand tall as the Day 4 chip leader with 2,750,000.

Play was scheduled for five levels today; however, players were sent on an extended break at the end of the 17th level so that payouts could be verified. As a result, it was decided that only four levels be played today.

Day 4 kicked off with 720 hopefuls all trying to survive – and thrive – into the money. However, only 666 spots were guaranteed a minimum $19,227 payday.

As expected, the money bubble came shortly after play began for the day. In the very first deal of hand-for-hand play, we witnessed a four-way bubble, which meant each bubble boy would take home a share of a $19,227 min-cash. It was also decided they would play a four-handed single-table tournament to determine who would get a seat in next year’s Main Event.

Among those who managed to cash, but ultimately fall short of the elusive Day 5 include Jason Mercier, Liv Boeree, Brock Parker, JC Tran, Tuan Le, Huck Seed, Terrence Chan, Mike McDonald, Chris Moorman, One Drop Champion Antonio Esfandiari, Maria Ho, Shaun Deeb and NHL goalie Roberto Luongo, who made his Main Event debut and had to settle for a min-cash after running pocket fours into Bryan Vanrijsbergen’s pocket jacks.

Also unable to last the day was Johnny Chan, our last-standing Main Event champion. Chan met his end late in the day after getting all-in preflop with pocket sevens and running into Isaac Baron’s pocket kings. Barron flopped quads on the flop and that was all she wrote for Chan.

By the day’s end, just 282 remained to duke it out on Day 5. Some notables still in the hunt include Erik Hellman (2,216,000), John Juanda (194,000), Kyle Bowker (2,081,000), Gaelle Baumann (1,438,000), Gavin Smith (831,000) and Vanessa Selbst (1,678,000) who spent all of her day at a restricted-access feature table.

Volpe came into Day 4 among the chip leaders and steadily built his stack throughout the day. Volpe was able to score a couple of eliminations, including the elimination of Sean Rice during the last level of play to propel his stack over three million. Volpe would have ended the day with about four million; however, he lost a big pot against Eric Pratt just before play ended.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, many of today's survivors also boast deep runs in prior Main Events. Here is a look at their names, chip counts going into Day 5 and their best prior Main Event results:

Daniel Negreanu also survived into Day 5 with 302,000 in chips. This marks the second year in a row Negreanu has made a deep run in the Main Event. He will undoubtedly be looking to best his 211th-place finish from last year.

Volpe Loses Massive Race on River

Paul Volpe- One Card From 4 million
Paul Volpe- One Card From 4 million

There was a mountain of chips in the middle when we got to the table, and based on the positions, here's how we believe it went down. Eric Pratt had put in a four bet to 115,000, but Volpe had already responded by moving all in when we got there. Eventually, Pratt made the call for the rest of his stack, which was 631,000.

Volpe: {j-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}
Pratt: {a-Clubs}{k-Spades}

The flop kept Volpe out in front, coming {8-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}. The {4-Hearts} on the turn brought chop outs for Pratt, as a five would split the pot. He was still looking for an ace or a king on the river, and the rail eagerly anticipated that card.

River: {a-Spades}

Pratt binked the ace on the river to double up, and Volpe just took it in stride, and started counting out the chips. After that hit, Volpe drops to 2.8 million, while Pratt shoots up to 1.26 million.

Who is Perry Green?

Level 19 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante
Perry Green
Perry Green

If you're part of poker's newer generation, you might not recognize the name Perry Green, but you should. The man is literally a living poker legend with World Series of Poker cashes dating back to 1976.

In fact, Green has three gold bracelets to his name:

  • 1976 $1,000 Limit Ace to Five Draw for $68,300
  • 1977 $5,000 Limit Ace to Five Draw for $10,000
  • 1979 $1,500 No Limit Hold'em-Non Pro for $76,500

In addition, Green finished runner-up to the legendary Stuey Ungar in the 1981 WSOP Main Event, which earned him a cool $150,000. All told, Green has 23 WSOP cashes totaling $592,709, with his most recent cash coming in this year's Seniors Event where he took 217th place for $2,786.

One last interesting fact, this marks the first time Green has cashed in the Main Event since 1991 when he placed fifth for $69,000 and his fourth Main Event cash overall.

Imagine How Pollak Would Act If He Lost

Kevin Pollak

James Keys opened the action to 20,000 from under the gun and it the play was folded around to Kevin Pollak in the hijack. He three-bet to 60,000 and it was back on Keys, who four-bet to 110,000. Pollak then shoved all in and Keys made the call.

Keys: {q-Hearts}{q-Spades}
Pollak: {k-Diamonds}{k-Spades}

Pollak was up on his feet here, shouting for his hand to hold up. He got his wish, with the {10-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}{4-Spades}{4-Clubs}{10-Spades} board sending him the double up. At this point Pollak stormed away from the table in celebration, pacing throughout the tournament area fist pumping. After a few moments, someone from a nearby table shouted, "Kevin, you're meant to stay at the table when you win."

"When you've got a minute, go f***k yourself," said Pollak jokingly in reply, still excited about his victory. "If this is how I act when i win, imagine what happens when I lose!" said Pollak as his table and the nearby tables joined him in a laugh.

Volpe Cracks Three Million

Paul Volpe (earlier) with about half of what he has now
Paul Volpe (earlier) with about half of what he has now

Paul Volpe was recently moved to the gold/blue section, meaning we don't have the easiest access. However, we did see the very end of a hand that saw Volpe bust Sean Rice.

Volpe filled us in on the details. He opened from middle position and Sean Rice three-bet to 52,000 on the button. Action folded back to Volpe who four-bet to 125,000. A call from Rice landed a {K-Clubs}{4-}{2-Clubs} flop. Both checked through to the {10-Clubs} turn where Volpe bet 150,000. A call from Rice delivered a {K-} on the river.

Volpe shoved, putting Rice to a decision for roughly 400,000. After a little bit of time in the tank, Rice called with {A-}{K-} for trip kings. Volpe, though, tabled {9-Clubs}{4-Clubs} for a flush to win the sizable pot and crack the 3,000,000 chip mark.

Ho Eliminated

Maria Ho - Eliminated
Maria Ho - Eliminated

Benjamin Hamnett raised to 21,000 from late position and it folded to Maria Ho in the small blind. Ho announced that she was all in for roughly 115,000. The big blind got out of the way and when action fell back on Hamnett he called.

Hamnett: {A-Spades}{k-Clubs}
Ho: {A-Clubs}{j-Hearts}

Ho was behind and in need of help. She did not find it on the {2-Clubs}{Q-Spades}{8-Spades} flop. Fourth street left her still searching for help as the {6-Diamonds} was of no assistance. The {6-Clubs} completed the board and Ho's 2012 World Series of Poker had officially come to an end. As the poker beauty left the Amazon room she stopped and took one look back at the table before turning and heading for the door.

Hamnett is now sitting on a stack of about 540,000 after having his ace-king hold.

Be sure to check out our interview with Ho from earlier in the day:

Baron's Kings Sink Johnny Chan

Johnny Chan
Johnny Chan

Preflop betting between Johnny Chan and Isaac Baron left the two-time WSOP Main Event champion all in with {7-Clubs}{7-Spades} and in dire straits against Baron's {K-Spades}{K-Diamonds}.

The dealer burned a card and delivered the flop — {10-Spades}{Q-Clubs}{K-Hearts} — Top set for Baron, and very bad news for Chan. The dealer went through the motions of dealing the {9-Spades} turn and {6-Spades} river, ending thigs for Chan. Meanwhile, Baron has now chipped up over 1 million.

With Huck Seed's bustout earlier today, Chan's knockout means the last former WSOP Main Event champion in the field has been eliminated.

Moorman No More, Man

Moorman Gone
Moorman Gone

The player under the gun opened to 16,000 only to have Patrick Halter three-bet to 41,000. Action folded all of the way around the table to Chris Moorman in the big blind. Moorman thought for a bit before pushing out a four-bet to 98,000 total.

The original raiser got out of the way and Halter announced that he was all in. Moorman tanked for about two minutes before announcing a call and moving his remaining 455,000 into the center.

Moorman: {A-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}
Halter: {A-Diamonds}{K-Spades}

Moorman was behind and in need of help. The camera crews flocked to the area and once they were in place, the board was dealt out quickly. It came down {6-Diamonds}{A-Hearts}{2-Spades}{4-Hearts}{10-Hearts} and Chris Moorman was sent to the rail. Halter's stack has now jumped over a million, as he is sitting on 1,350,000.

An Orbit with Daniel Negreanu

Level 18 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante
Daniel Negreanu
Daniel Negreanu

The Main Event is a beast of a tournament. It requires hours of sitting idly in chair with infrequent moments of thrill. Most of the time poker tournaments are long grinds of boredom and we like to give our readers an inside look at playing in the most prestigious tournament in the world.

At the center of the craziness is one of poker's biggest stars - Daniel Negreanu. He's constantly surrounded by cameras, having his picture taken and asked for autographs at the WSOP. We'll let you behind the ropes to spend an orbit with Kid Poker.

Hand 1 - Negreanu started on the button, action folded around to him and he raised to 18,000. The small blind folded and the big blind, Ryan Young, had not returned from dinner and Negreanu won the pot.

He noticed the cameras around Jason Somerville's table and asked another player at the table if Somerville was in the hand. He wasn't and Negreanu seemed relieved.

Hand 2 - Negreanu was in the cutoff and opened for 18,000. The player on the button folded, Young's small blind was forfeited and Sam Soverel folded his big blind after a long pause.

"I was gonna call if you jammed," Negreanu said. "I could see you doing the math in your head." He showed {A-Spades} {J-Spades}.

Hand 3 - Negreanu folded preflop and lamented, "Why didn't he bet there?" He got up from the table and pulled Somerville away from the camera circus of a table. They talked in hushed tones for about 30 seconds before they each returned to their seats.

Hand 4 - Negreanu opened for 18,000 and Soverel moved all in from the button.

"I'm gonna get busted by Daniel," Soverel said.

The blinds released, Negreanu called and took it upon himself to call the cameras over.

Negreanu: {9-Diamonds} {9-Spades}
Soverel: {K-Clubs} {10-Hearts}

The board ran {5-Diamonds} {A-Spades} {K-Diamonds} {8-Spades} {7-Hearts} and Soverel doubled up from 183,000. Negreanu's stack slipped to a little over 500,000.

Hand 5 - Negreanu folded preflop and shifted back and forth uncomfortably in his chair. As a hand played out Negreanu leaned back in his chair and told Somerville about the hand he lost.

Hand 6 - Ryan Young finally returned to his seat and Negreanu welcomed him back. He briefly told Young about the hand he lost as players at the other side of the table got to a four-bet preflop.

Negreanu refocused on the table and studied his opponents as they played to the turn.

Hand 7 - Negreanu was in the big blind for 8,000 and Joel Bullock opened to 19,000. A player on the button called and Negreanu called as well. The flop came {K-Diamonds} {K-Hearts} {2-Spades} and they all checked. The turn came {10-Clubs} followed by a round of checks. The river {K-Clubs} saw all players check again.

"Jack high," Negreanu said and the player on the button tabled {A-Spades}{Q-Diamonds} to win the hand.

Hand 8 - Olivier Chubilleua opened for 16,000 in late position and Negreanu raised to 44,000 from the small blind. Chubilleua tanked for a short time while Negreanu leaned forward and studied him from across the table.

Chubilleua folded and Negreanu took the small pot.

Hand 9 - Negreanu was back on the button and folded preflop with not action in front of him. He ended the orbit with 560,000.

Lichtenberger Scores Massive Pot to More Than Double Up

Andrew Lichtenberger
Andrew Lichtenberger

Jeremy Ausmus opened for 17,000 from middle position and action folded around to Filip Verboven, who pushed all in for his last 120,000 from the cutoff seat. Andrew "LuckyChewy" Lichtenberger then cold-called from the button. It was folded back to Ausmus, who announced he was all in. Lichtenberger quickly called all-in for 401,000 total and all three hands were revealed.

Lichtenberger: {K-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}
Ausmus: {A-Spades}{A-Clubs}
Verboven: {A-Hearts}{10-Spades}

Ausmus was in great shape to eliminate both of his opponents, however, the {Q-Spades}{9-Spades}{K-Hearts}{10-Hearts}{8-Spades} board left Lichtenberger with a set of kings - good for the massive scoop to chip Lichtenberger up to 930,000.

Verboven was eliminated and Ausmus slipped back down to 600,000.
