Gwinner Takes All

Henrik Gwinner has knocked out a short-stacked opponent who moved all in on an {8-Diamonds} {10-Spades} {2-Hearts} flop. His opponent was holding {K-Hearts} {10-Diamonds} for top pair, but he was drawing pretty thin against Gwinner's {K-Clubs} {K-Diamonds} and after exactly no miracles occurred on the {Q-Spades} turn and {9-Clubs} river, Gwinner was up to around 17,500.

Oh, Mahoney...

A strange hand cut short Stefan Hachmeister's rollercoaster chip ride, but in much more spectator-pleasing style than his previous preflop all-ins. This time Dennis O'Mahoney limped preflop, as did he in later position.

The flop: {8-Spades} {A-Spades} {7-Clubs} Attention drifted, somewhat, as right next to me tablemate Willie Tann was chatting to a friend - when he suddenly looked at his neighbor and remarked, "Oh, you're all in!" And he was - the 4,000 or so left in his stack was the bet facing the Irishman, who was staring at him intently.

"I've played this really, really badly by limping," he chided himself, clearly not about to make a happy call - but call he did, showing {A-Diamonds} {K-Spades} . Hachmeister flipped the {8-Hearts} {8-Clubs} for the flopped set, and stood up to wait for the deck to deal his fate.

Turn: {J-Spades} "Spade," requested O'Mahoney.
River: {3-Spades} Now the rest of the table made sad faces but Hachmeister took his exit in his stride.

Double-Ups All Around

Mohammed Hassan has doubled up to 7,300, all in preflop with a lackluster {A-Diamonds} {5-Spades} against an opponent's even more lackluster {Q-Spades} {7-Spades}, with no help for either player from the {J-Diamonds} {K-Diamonds} {8-Diamonds} {8-Clubs} {10-Spades} board.

Meanwhile Hoa Ngo has doubled up again with pocket aces that flopped trips and turned quads. He now has a comfortable 16,000.

Battle of the Brits

A move that failed to pay off for Pete Linton has dropped him down to a still-respectable-but-not-as-much-as-he-had-before 20,000. He raised from the button, only for Rumit Somaiya to reraise from the big blind to around 2,000. Unfazed, Linton made it a hefty 6,300 -- all of his yellow 1,000 denomination chips. To which Somaiya announced all in. Linton looked surprised. "All in?" A humorless nod from Somaiya. Without a second glance at his cards, Linton passed.

Somaiya now up to a chip-lead-contending 35,000.

Cantu Scoops

I joined the action late in the day, but the pot had already escalated to 14,000 with the final decision on William Martin. With the board reading {5-Spades}{10-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{6-Hearts}, Brandon Cantu had pushed all in for a total of 7,150 and was patiently awaiting the decision of Martin who was tinkering with his stack of 19,325.

As Martin continued to mull, Cantu remained as cool as the Arctic breeze, although the soothing head massage he was receiving at the time probably made the task a little easier. A minute or two later, Martin made a very reluctant fold, to allow Cantu to scoop up the pot and construct a new and improved stack of 22,000.

Juanda Busts Phillips, to a Matusow Soundtrack

While Mike Matusow twittered on by the table about a method he had discovered to save himself $800 on ludicrously overpriced London internet connections, John Juanda raised. He received one caller before youthful GUKPT winner Tony "Ginger" Phillips announced all in. Juanda also announced all in over the top, the caller got out of the way and they were on their backs, as it were.

Phillips: {4-Clubs} {4-Diamonds}
Juanda: {10-Clubs} {10-Spades}

Board: {Q-Hearts} {8-Clubs} {Q-Diamonds} {9-Hearts} {10-Hearts}

With a sigh and a quick, "Good luck, boys," Phillips took his leave. The Matusow drone didn't let up for a second. "...You see, that's how Juanda wins pots..."

AK Giveth, and AK Taketh Away

Or the other way round, to be precise. German player Stefan Hachmeister was hovering under the starting stack when James Vogl made it 800 to go preflop - he moved in and was called immediately by the even shorter-stacked Vogl with his {A-Clubs} {K-Diamonds} . Hachmeister had {9-Diamonds} {9-Hearts} and while that looked promising on the {5-Clubs} {8-Spades} {4-Hearts} flop, the {A-Diamonds} on the turn ended up cinching it for his opponent.

In desperate shape himself now, Hachmeister then moved in preflop over the top of a Dennis O'Mahoney raise to 850. He was called so fast he didn't realize it had happened yet and the dealer had to prompt them to get their hands on their backs.

Hachmeister: {A-Diamonds} {K-Diamonds}
O'Mahoney: {J-Spades} {J-Clubs}

This time the {A-Hearts} made an appearance straight away on the flop, and with the board coming a further {8-Diamonds} {3-Hearts} {Q-Diamonds} O'Mahoney was drawing to one lone hearty Jack which missed the river and doubled Hachmeister right back up.

The Mouth is in the House

Cheeky monkey Mike 'The Mouth' Matusow has entered the building and quickly circumnavigated Daniel Negreanu's table to see how his friend/foe was getting along. As always, Matusow wasn't shy in sharing his thoughts.

"He [Daniel] is gonna give all those chips away. He'll give them to..." Matusow hesitated as he scoured the table. "... My God, there's no one here to give them to. How did you get this table?"

The Milky Bars Are On Him

"I'm trying my best to exit the tournament," claimed Ben 'milkybarkid' Grundy, "but every time I play a pot I seem to win it."

"I've got about 25,000 now," he continued, "but I have to be at a restaurant soon, I didn't expect to be in for this long."

After I swam through Grundy's sea of negativity, I finally prised a hand from him. "I was down to 2,000 at one point, but doubled up four times. On the biggest one I called a raise with J-9 and hit a J-J-x flop with two of the same suit. I got looked up by tens."
